Study of a colliding laser-produced plasma by analysis of time and space-resolved image spectra
The interaction of two counter-propagating laser-produced plasmas was studied using simultaneous
imaging and spectroscopic techniques. Spectrally-filtered time-gated ICCD imaging was used
to obtain information about the spatial dynamics and temporal evolution of the collision process.
While, time-resolved imaging spectroscopy was used to determine the spatial and temporal distributions
of electron temperature and density within the interaction region. We examine specifically
the interaction of plasmas whose parameters match those typically used in pulsed laser deposition
of thin films. These low temperature plasmas are highly collisional leading to the creation of a
pronounced stagnation layer in the interaction region
Classical versus Quantum Structure of the Scattering Probability Matrix. Chaotic wave-guides
The purely classical counterpart of the Scattering Probability Matrix (SPM)
of the quantum scattering matrix is defined for 2D
quantum waveguides for an arbitrary number of propagating modes . We compare
the quantum and classical structures of for a waveguide
with generic Hamiltonian chaos. It is shown that even for a moderate number of
channels, knowledge of the classical structure of the SPM allows us to predict
the global structure of the quantum one and, hence, understand important
quantum transport properties of waveguides in terms of purely classical
dynamics. It is also shown that the SPM, being an intensity measure, can give
additional dynamical information to that obtained by the Poincar\`{e} maps.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
X-Ray Determination of the Variable Rate of Mass Accretion onto TW Hydrae
Diagnostics of electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), and
hydrogen column density (N_H) from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating
spectrum of He-like Ne IX in TW Hydrae (TW Hya), in conjunction with a
classical accretion model, allow us to infer the accretion rate onto the star
directly from measurements of the accreting material. The new method introduces
the use of the absorption of Ne IX lines as a measure of the column density of
the intervening, accreting material. On average, the derived mass accretion
rate for TW Hya is 1.5 x 10^{-9} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}, for a stellar magnetic
field strength of 600 Gauss and a filling factor of 3.5%. Three individual
Chandra exposures show statistically significant differences in the Ne IX line
ratios, indicating changes in N_H, T_e, and n_e by factors of 0.28, 1.6, and
1.3, respectively. In exposures separated by 2.7 days, the observations
reported here suggest a five-fold reduction in the accretion rate. This
powerful new technique promises to substantially improve our understanding of
the accretion process in young stars
Water fragmentation by bare and dressed light ions with MeV energies: Fragment-ion-energy and time-of-flight distributions
The energy and time-of-flight distributions of water ionic fragments produced by impact of fast atoms and bare and dressed ions; namely, H+, Li0-3+, C1+, and C2+ are reported in this work. Fragment species as a function of emission energy and time-of-flight were recorded by using an electrostatic spectrometer and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, respectively. An improved Coulomb explosion model coupled to a classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulation gave the energy centroids of the fragments for the dissociation channels resulting from the removal of two to five electrons from the water molecule. For the energy distribution ranging up to 50 eV, both the experiment and model reveal an isotropic production of multiple charged oxygen ions, as well as hydrogen ions. From the ion energy distribution, relative yields of the dissociation resulting from multiple ionization were obtained as a function of the charge state, as well as for several projectile energies. Multiple-ionization yields with charge state up to 4+, were extracted from the measurements of the time-of-flight spectra, focused on the production of single and multiple charged oxygen ions. The measurements were compared to ion-water collision experiments investigated at the keV energy range available in the literature, revealing differences and similarities in the fragment-ion energy distribution.Fil: Wolff, W.. Association of the Dictyostelium 30 kDa actin bundling protein with contact regions
\u27Contact regions\u27 are plasma membrane domains derived from areas of intercellular contact between aggregating Dictyostelium amebae (H.M. Ingalls et al. (1986). Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 83, 4779). Purified contact regions contain a prominent actin-binding protein with an M(r) of 34,000. Immunoblotting with monoclonal antibodies identifies this polypeptide as a 34,000 M(r) actin-bundling protein (known as 30 kDa protein), previously shown to be enriched in filopodia (M. Fechheimer (1987). J. Cell Biol. 104, 1539). About four times more 30 kDa protein by mass is associated with contact regions than is found in total plasma membranes isolated from aggregating cells. In agreement with these observations, immunostaining of the 30 kDa protein in aggregating cells reveals a prominent localization along the plasma membrane at sites of intercellular contact. By contrast, alpha-actinin does not appear to be significantly enriched at sites of cell to cell contact. Binding experiments using purified plasma membranes, actin and 30 kDa protein indicate that the 30 kDa protein is associated with the plasma membrane primarily through interactions with actin filaments. Calcium ions are known to decrease the interaction of actin with 30 kDa protein in solution. Surprisingly, membrane-associated complexes of actin and the 30 kDa protein are much less sensitive to dissociation by micromolar levels of free calcium ions than are complexes in solutions lacking membranes
Effect of stripe clearing on 4 grasses species and 2 broadleaves of caldenal
In the region of “Espinal”, Calden Distrct in the province of San Luis there is a strong agriculturization process with the consequent loss of native forest remnants, conserving endangered native species and invasion of exotic species. New heavenly double copies
The double copy relates scattering amplitudes and classical solutions in
Yang-Mills theory, gravity, and related field theories. Previous work has shown
that this has an explicit realisation in self-dual YM theory, where the
equation of motion can be written in a form that maps directly to Pleba\'nski's
heavenly equation for self-dual gravity. The self-dual YM equation involves an
area-preserving diffeomorphism algebra, two copies of which appear in the
heavenly equation. In this paper, we show that this construction is a special
case of a wider family of heavenly-type examples, by (i) performing Moyal
deformations, and (ii) replacing the area-preserving diffeomorphisms with a
less restricted algebra. As a result, we obtain a double-copy interpretation
for hyper-Hermitian manifolds, extending the previously known hyper-K\"ahler
case. We also introduce a double-Moyal deformation of the heavenly equation.
The examples where the construction of Lax pairs is possible are manifestly
consistent with Ward's conjecture, and suggest that the classical integrability
of the gravity-type theory may be guaranteed in general by the integrability of
at least one of two gauge-theory-type single copies.Comment: 34 pages, 1 figur
