    Thermo-mechanical compatibility of CFRP versus steel reinforcement for concrete at high temperature

    Optimization of the design of concrete structures has become a driver for the use of nonconventional reinforcing materials. One example of this is the emerging use of non-corrosive, highstrength, and lightweight carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) prestressing tendons. It is widely known that the bond between FRP reinforcing tendons and concrete deteriorates at elevated temperature due to a combination of factors. Lateral thermal expansion of FRP reinforcing tendons at elevated temperature has been shown to have consequences for the bond performance of these systems. This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out to assess the occurrence of heat-induced longitudinal splitting cracks in concrete specimens reinforced with CFRP or steel prestressing tendons. A novel testing methodology, namely a Heat-Transfer Rate Inducing System (H-TRIS), is used to subject specimens to thermal loading which replicates that experienced by equivalent specimens in a standard fire resistance test. A comparison between CFRP and steel tendons is made, and the occurrence of longitudinal splitting cracks is evaluated in terms of the time to occurrence and thermal gradient within the concrete. Results are compared against an available analytical model

    This article reframes the concept of comprehension as a social and intellectual practice. It reviews current approaches to reading instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse and low socioeconomic students, noting an emphasis on comprehension as autonomous skills. The Four Resources model (Freebody & Luke, 1990) is used to make the case for the integration of comprehension instruction with an emphasis on student cultural and community knowledge, and substantive intellectual and sociocultural content in elementary school curricula. Illustrations are drawn from research underway on the teaching of literacy in primary schools in low SES communities

    Impact of an improved neutrino energy estimate on outflows in neutron star merger simulations

    Binary neutron star mergers are promising sources of gravitational waves for ground-based detectors such as Advanced LIGO. Neutron-rich material ejected by these mergers may also be the main source of r-process elements in the Universe, while radioactive decays in the ejecta can power bright electromagnetic post-merger signals. Neutrino-matter interactions play a critical role in the evolution of the composition of the ejected material, which significantly impacts the outcome of nucleosynthesis and the properties of the associated electromagnetic signal. In this work, we present a simulation of a binary neutron star merger using an improved method for estimating the average neutrino energies in our energy-integrated neutrino transport scheme. These energy estimates are obtained by evolving the neutrino number density in addition to the neutrino energy and flux densities. We show that significant changes are observed in the composition of the polar ejecta when comparing our new results with earlier simulations in which the neutrino spectrum was assumed to be the same everywhere in optically thin regions. In particular, we find that material ejected in the polar regions is less neutron rich than previously estimated. Our new estimates of the composition of the polar ejecta make it more likely that the color and timescale of the electromagnetic signal depend on the orientation of the binary with respect to an observer's line-of-sight. These results also indicate that important observable properties of neutron star mergers are sensitive to the neutrino energy spectrum, and may need to be studied through simulations including a more accurate, energy-dependent neutrino transport scheme.Comment: 19p, 17 figures, Accepted by Phys.Rev.

    We improve on recent estimates for the probability of generating the alternating and symmetric groups Alt(n)\mathrm{Alt}(n) and Sym(n)\mathrm{Sym}(n). In particular we find the sharp lower bound, if the probability is given by a quadratic in n1n^{-1}. This leads to improved bounds on the largest number h(Alt(n))h(\mathrm{Alt}(n)) such that a direct product of h(Alt(n))h(\mathrm{Alt}(n)) copies of Alt(n)\mathrm{Alt}(n) can be generated by two elements

    Machine learning -- based diffractive imaging with subwavelength resolution

    Far-field characterization of small objects is severely constrained by the diffraction limit. Existing tools achieving sub-diffraction resolution often utilize point-by-point image reconstruction via scanning or labelling. Here, we present a new imaging technique capable of fast and accurate characterization of two-dimensional structures with at least wavelength/25 resolution, based on a single far-field intensity measurement. Experimentally, we realized this technique resolving the smallest-available to us 180-nm-scale features with 532-nm laser light. A comprehensive analysis of machine learning algorithms was performed to gain insight into the learning process and to understand the flow of subwavelength information through the system. Image parameterization, suitable for diffractive configurations and highly tolerant to random noise was developed. The proposed technique can be applied to new characterization tools with high spatial resolution, fast data acquisition, and artificial intelligence, such as high-speed nanoscale metrology and quality control, and can be further developed to high-resolution spectroscop

    Renormalization group scaling in nonrelativistic QCD

    We discuss the matching conditions and renormalization group evolution of non-relativistic QCD. A variant of the conventional MS-bar scheme is proposed in which a subtraction velocity nu is used rather than a subtraction scale mu. We derive a novel renormalization group equation in velocity space which can be used to sum logarithms of v in the effective theory. We apply our method to several examples. In particular we show that our formulation correctly reproduces the two-loop anomalous dimension of the heavy quark production current near threshold.Comment: (27 pages, revtex
