Polarization-resolved extinction and scattering cross-section of individual gold nanoparticles measured by wide-field microscopy on a large ensemble
We report a simple, rapid, and quantitative wide-field technique to measure
the optical extinction and scattering
cross-section of single nanoparticles using wide-field microscopy enabling
simultaneous acquisition of hundreds of nanoparticles for statistical analysis.
As a proof of principle, we measured nominally spherical gold nanoparticles of
40\,nm and 100\,nm diameter and found mean values and standard deviations of
and consistent with previous literature.
Switching from unpolarized to linearly polarized excitation, we measured
as a function of the polarization direction, and used it to
characterize the asphericity of the nanoparticles. The method can be
implemented cost-effectively on any conventional wide-field microscope and is
applicable to any nanoparticles
ATLAS inner tracking detectors: Run 1 performance and developments for Run 2
AbstractThe measurement of charged-particle trajectories with the inner tracking detectors of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is a key input for higher-level object reconstruction, ranging from leptons to the identification of heavy-flavor jets. The information provided by the inner tracking systems has also been proven to be very powerful for disentangling the effects of several interactions occurring in the same bunch crossing. In this contribution, the performance during the Run 1 data-taking period and preparation for the next run in 2015 is reviewed. In particular, it is shown how the passive material inside the inner tracking acceptance has been further studied in order to reduce the systematic errors on the tracking efficiency, with benefits for physics measurements. In addition, the developments in disentangling close-by tracks which naturally occur in the decay of very high-pT objects (e.g. tau leptons) or jets are presented. The ongoing upgrade of the ATLAS detector includes an additional silicon layer (IBL) in the inner tracking system; the preparation for the integration of the new hardware and its expected performance is reviewed as well. Finally a summary of recent developments of the tracking software aiming for speed and disk-space optimizations is presented
Wide-field imaging of single nanoparticle extinction with sub-nm2 sensitivity
We report a highly sensitive wide-ïżœeld imaging technique for quantitative measurement of the
optical extinction cross-section ïżœext of single nanoparticles. The technique is simple and high-speed,
and enables simultaneous acquisition of hundreds of nanoparticles for statistical analysis. Using
rapid referencing, fast acquisition, and a deconvolution analysis, a shot-noise limited sensitivity down
to 0.4nm2 is achieved. Measurements on a set of individual gold nanoparticles of 5nm diameter
using this method yield ïżœext = (10:0 ïżœ 3:1)nm2, consistent with theoretical expectations, and well
above the background
uctuations of 0.9nm2
Pinning in the extended LugiatoâLefever equation
We consider a variant of the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), which is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a one-dimensional torus with forcing and damping, to which we add a first-order derivative term with a potential . The potential breaks the translation invariance of LLE. Depending on the existence of zeroes of the effective potential , which is a suitably weighted and integrated version of , we show that stationary solutions from can be continued locally into the range . Moreover, the extremal points of the -continued solutions are located near zeros of . We therefore call this phenomenon pinning of stationary solutions. If we assume additionally that the starting stationary solution at is spectrally stable with the simple zero eigenvalue due to translation invariance being the only eigenvalue on the imaginary axis, we can prove asymptotic stability or instability of its -continuation depending on the sign of at the zero of and the sign of . The variant of the LLE arises in the description of optical frequency combs in a Kerr nonlinear ring-shaped microresonator which is pumped by two different continuous monochromatic light sources of different frequencies and different powers. Our analytical findings are illustrated by numerical simulations
