Academic achievement in sciences: the role of preferences and educative assets

This paper provides new evidence on the effect of pupil´s self-motivation andacademic assets allocation on the academic achievement in sciences acrosscountries. By using the Programme for International Student Assessment 2006 (PISA2006) test we find that both explanatory variables have a positive effect onstudent´s performance. Self-motivation is measured through an instrumentthat allows us to avoid possible endogeneity problems. Quantile regression isused for analyzing the existence of different estimated coefficients over thedistribution. It is found that both variables have different effect on academicperformance depending on the pupil´s score. These findings support theimportance of designing focalized programs for different populations, especially in terms of access to information and communication technologiessuch as internet.PISA, self-motivation, academic assets, academic achievement, Quantile regression

The role of the mentor in the introduction of new principals: Contributions from research in a chilean ase

Specifically, the role of the mentor of these directors, who is new to the Chilean educational system, was analyzed to identify which types of effects are recognized as generated by the relationship between mentor and director and their contribution to the objectives of the program. Within a positive evaluation of the program, the main contribution of mentoring in the development of reflexive processes around the role of the director is highlighted. Likewise, the participants emphasized that, within this relationship, help is needed in the knowledge of regulations, educational policies or forms of work in the school, as well as the development of managerial, leadership or decision-making skill

Jets from massive protostars as gamma-ray sources: the case of IRAS 18162-2048

Protostellar jets are present in the later stages of the stellarformation. Non-thermal radio emission has been detected from the jetsand hot spots of some massive protostars, indicating the presence ofrelativistic electrons there. We are interested in exploring if thesenon-thermal particles can emit also at γ-rays. In the presentcontribution we model the non-thermal emission produced in the jetsassociated with the massive protostar IRAS 18162-2048. We obtain thatthe γ-ray emission produced in this source is detectable by thecurrent facilities in the GeV domain.Fil: Araudo, Anabella Teresa. Provincia de Buenos Aires. Gobernación. Impact of Organizational Culture Values on Organizational Agility

To remain competitive within the current, uncertain business scenario, it is vital for firms to develop capabilities that lead them to adapt and offer quick responses to market changes. Under the dynamic capabilities view of the firm, this paper proposes a model that presents an exhaustive analysis of two relevant research gaps: (i) the underlying relationships that determine the impact exerted by each of the four organizational culture typologies, comprised in Cameron and Quinn’s Competing Values Framework on organizational agility and, (ii) the contingency effect exerted by a key environmental factor, the industry’s technology intensity. An empirical study is performed to test the relationships proposed, using data collected from 172 Spain-based companies. To examine the contingency effect of technology intensity, the sample is divided into two subsamples, high and medium tech companies. This work uses partial least squares path-modeling, a variance-based structural equations modeling technique, in order to test and validate the research model and hypotheses posited. In addition, thorough analyses are carried out to assess the predictive performance of our modelJunta de Andalucía P10-SEJ-608

Light-harvesting in bacteria exploits a critical interplay between transport and trapping dynamics

Light-harvesting bacteria Rhodospirillum Photometricum were recently found to adopt strikingly different architectures depending on illumination conditions. We present analytic and numerical calculations which explain this observation by quantifying a dynamical interplay between excitation transfer kinetics and reaction center cycling. High light-intensity membranes (HLIM) exploit dissipation as a photo-protective mechanism, thereby safeguarding a steady supply of chemical energy, while low light-intensity membranes (LLIM) efficiently process unused illumination intensity by channelling it to open reaction centers. More generally, our analysis elucidates and quantifies the trade-offs in natural network design for solar energy conversion.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures. Information systems capabilities and organizational agility: Understanding the mediating role of absorptive capacity when influenced by a hierarchy culture

Organizational agility (OA), as a key dynamic capability, is a firm’s ability to enable sensing environmental changes and responding efficiently and effectively to them. This study explores this topic further by analyzing the part played by the information systems capabilities (ISC) variable as an antecedent of OA, and absorptive capacity (AC) as a mediator construct. Furthermore, we test the negative moderating role of hierarchy culture (HC) in the AC–OA link. Using partial least squares (PLS) and the PROCESS macro, we find evidence of these relations proposed, and the existence of a conditional mediating situation generated by H
