    The Effect of Workplace Stretching Exercise on Reducing Musculoskeletal Complaints in Ndao Ikat Weaving Workers in Rote Ndao District

    Musculoskeletal complaints in Ndao weaving workers are a problem of muscle disorders for weavers. As a result of this process is a long time and repeatedly will cause musculoskeletal complaints. Workplace Stretching Exercise is designed with the principle of muscle stretching, which is an attempt to extend muscle rest or relaxation. This activity will improve blood circulation so that it helps relax nervous tension and train muscles to be stronger so they don't get tired easily while working. This study aimed to analyze the effect of workplace stretching exercises on the reduction of musculoskeletal complaints in Ndao weaving workers in Rote Ndao Regency. This is a quantitative research with a pre-experimental design type one-group pretest-posttest design method. The population in this study were active weavers in Ikat Ndao weaving, Lobalain District as many as 40 weavers. The selected research sample has met the eligibility criteria for as many as 18 active weavers. The type of analysis test used is the paired sample t-test. The results showed that there was a difference in the level of musculoskeletal complaints before the intervention was in the moderate complaint category with a percentage of 77.8% and after the WSE intervention, the complaints decreased to the low complaint category with a percentage of 66.7% with a significant decrease in value of 19.39%. The results of the analysis show that there is an effect of Workplace Stretching Exercise on the reduction of musculoskeletal complaints in Ndao tie weaving workers, where there is a large difference in value (p = 0.007 ) â‰¤ (0.05), so it is expected that Ndao tie weaving workers will carry out Workplace Stretching Exercise activities every day in between weaving activities to reduce musculoskeletal complaints

    Subjective and objective assessment of neuromuscular fatigue in female painters

    The aim of this study was to evaluate subjectively and objectively neuromuscular fatigue in female painters before and after a workingday. The subjects (n=11) were female painters aged 22–60 years. The subjects completed a questionnaire and gave a subjective evaluation on muscle fatigue sensation in hands, trunk, back and lower limbs according to Borg's Category Ratio (CR-10) scale. Thereafter they performed 3-minute test of painting a wall, in the course of which the electromyographical (EMG) power spectral median frequency (MF) slope for biceps brachii, trapezius, deltoid and infraspinatus muscles was measured. The results indicated a significant change in the subjective muscle fatigue sensation in hands by 40%, lower limbs by 54% and trunk by 57% after the working day, compared to the beginning of the working day. EMG power spectral MF slope of the measured muscles did not differ significantly during the 3-minute wall coloring test before and after working day. It was concluded that subjective muscle fatigue sensation in hands, lower limbs and trunk was higher after the working day whereas it was less pronounced in the back. Muscle fatigue evaluated objectively by MF slope of EMG power spectrum from biceps brachii, trepezius, deltoid and infraspinatus muscles was not evident during the wall coloring test before and after the working day

    24-h Activity Rhythms and Health in Older Adults

    __Purpose of Review:__ Circadian rhythms, including 24-h activity rhythms, change with age. Disturbances in these 24-h activity rhythms at older age have also been implied in various diseases. This review evaluates recent findings on 24-h activity rhythms and disease in older adults. __Recent Findings:__ Growing evidence supports that 24-h activity rhythm disturbances at older age are related to the presence and/or progression of disease. Longitudinal and genetic work even suggests a potential causal contribution of disturbed 24-h activity rhythms to disease development. Interventional studies targeting circadian and 24-h activity rhythms demonstrate that 24-h rhythmicity can be improved, but the effect of improving 24-h rhythmicity on disease risk or progression remains to be shown. __Summary:__ Increasing evidence suggests that 24-h activity rhythms are involved in age-related diseases. Further studies are needed to assess causality, underlying mechanisms, and the effects of treating disturbed 24-h activity rhythms on age-related disease

    Ca2+ store depletion causes STIM1 to accumulate in ER regions closely associated with the plasma membrane

    Stromal interacting molecule 1 (STIM1), reported to be an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ sensor controlling store-operated Ca2+ entry, redistributes from a diffuse ER localization into puncta at the cell periphery after store depletion. STIM1 redistribution is proposed to be necessary for Ca2+ release–activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channel activation, but it is unclear whether redistribution is rapid enough to play a causal role. Furthermore, the location of STIM1 puncta is uncertain, with recent reports supporting retention in the ER as well as insertion into the plasma membrane (PM). Using total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and patch-clamp recording from single Jurkat cells, we show that STIM1 puncta form several seconds before CRAC channels open, supporting a causal role in channel activation. Fluorescence quenching and electron microscopy analysis reveal that puncta correspond to STIM1 accumulation in discrete subregions of junctional ER located 10–25 nm from the PM, without detectable insertion of STIM1 into the PM. Roughly one third of these ER–PM contacts form in response to store depletion. These studies identify an ER structure underlying store-operated Ca2+ entry, whose extreme proximity to the PM may enable STIM1 to interact with CRAC channels or associated proteins

    Associations of dietary patterns with objective and subjective sleep duration and sleep quality in a population-based cohort study

    Objective: To examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of various types of dietary patterns with self-reported sleep quality and with actigraphy-estimated sleep parameters in the prospective, population-based Rotterdam Study. Methods: For each participant, scores for five different dietary patterns were derived based on food frequency questionnaires; two pre-defined scores developed to estimate adherence to the Dutch dietary guidelines and to the Mediterranean diet; and three data-driven scores indicating a prudent, unhealthy and typical Dutch diet. In 2589 participants (median age 56.9 years; 58 % female), self-rated sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. In 533 participants, actigraphs were worn for an average of 6.8 days (SD: 0.7) to estimate total sleep time, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, and sleep efficiency. Sleep parameters were measured at baseline and 3–6 years later. Multiple linear regression was used to assess cross-sectional and longitudinal associations. Results: No statistically significant associations between dietary patterns and total sleep time, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency and subjective sleep quality were observed in cross-sectional or longitudinal analyses. To illustrate, the effect estimate for sleep duration was 2.7 min per night (95 % CI -2.1, 7.5) per 5 point increase in Mediterranean diet score in the cross-sectional analyses. Furthermore, in longitudinal analyses, the effect estimate for sleep duration was −1.0 min per night (95 % CI -5.2, 3.1) per SD increase in the prudent diet. Conclusions: Our results suggest that dietary patterns are not associated with sleep in this population-based cohort study.     Insomnia and the incidence, recurrence and persistence of common mental disorders:Sex-differences in the general population

    Insomnia is common throughout the population and thought to be a risk factor for mental disorders. We assessed the association of insomnia symptoms with incidence, recurrence and persistence of mood, anxiety and substance use disorders. In 4007 participants (55 % women, mean age 51.0 ± 12.3) of the population-based Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS), having insomnia symptoms increased the odds of developing, recurring and persisting mood disorders, mostly in men. Insomnia only associated with recurring anxiety disorders, particularly in women, and not with substance use disorders. Treating insomnia may aid recovery and prevention of mental disorders, particularly mood disorders.</p

    Characterization of complex fractionated atrial electrograms by sample entropy: An international multi-center study

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly clinically-encountered arrhythmia. Catheter ablation of AF is mainly based on trigger elimination and modification of the AF substrate. Substrate mapping ablation of complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAEs) has emerged to be a promising technique. To improve substrate mapping based on CFAE analysis, automatic detection algorithms need to be developed in order to simplify and accelerate the ablation procedures. According to the latest studies, the level of fractionation has been shown to be promisingly well estimated from CFAE measured during radio frequency (RF) ablation of AF. The nature of CFAE is generally nonlinear and nonstationary, so the use of complexity measures is considered to be the appropriate technique for the analysis of AF records. This work proposes the use of sample entropy (SampEn), not only as a way to discern between non-fractionated and fractionated atrial electrograms (A-EGM), but also as a tool for characterizing the degree of A-EGM regularity, which is linked to changes in the AF substrate and to heart tissue damage. The use of SampEn combined with a blind parameter estimation optimization process enables the classification between CFAE and non-CFAE with statistical significance (p < 0:001), 0.89 area under the ROC, 86% specificity and 77% sensitivity over a mixed database of A-EGM combined from two independent CFAE signal databases, recorded during RF ablation of AF in two EU countries (542 signals in total). On the basis of the results obtained in this study, it can be suggested that the use of SampEn is suitable for real-time support during navigation of RF ablation of AF, as only 1.5 seconds of signal segments need to be analyzed

    Plasma neurofilament light chain in association to late-life depression in the general population

    Aim:Investigating what is underlying late-life depression is becoming increasingly important with the rapidly growing elderly population. Yet, the associations between plasma biomarkers of neuroaxonal damage and late-life depression remain largely unclear. Therefore, we determined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of neurofilament light chain (NfL) with depression in middle-aged and elderly individuals, and total tau, β-amyloid 40 and 42 for comparison. Methods:We included 3,895 participants (71.78 years [SD = 7.37], 53.4% women) from the population-based Rotterdam Study. Between 2002 and 2005, NfL, total tau, β-amyloid 40 and β-amyloid 42 were determined in blood and depressive symptoms were measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D). Incident depressive events (clinically relevant depressive symptoms, depressive syndromes, major depressive disorders) were measured prospectively with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression, a clinical interview and follow-up of medical records over a median follow-up of 7.0 years (interquartile range 1.80). We used linear and Cox proportional hazard regression models. Results: Each log2 pg./mL increase in NfL was cross-sectionally associated with more depressive symptoms (adjusted mean difference: 0.32, 95% CI 0.05–0.58), as well as with an increased risk of any incident depressive event over time (hazard ratio: 1.22, 95% CI 1.01–1.47). Further, more amyloid-β 40 was cross-sectionally associated with more depressive symptoms (adjusted mean difference: 0.70, 95% CI 0.15–1.25). Conclusion: Higher levels of NfL are cross-sectionally associated with more depressive symptoms and a higher risk of incident depressive events longitudinally. The association was stronger for NfL compared to other plasma biomarkers, suggesting a potential role of neuroaxonal damage in developing late-life depression.</p
