Prediction of final infarct volume from native CT perfusion and treatment parameters using deep learning
CT Perfusion (CTP) imaging has gained importance in the diagnosis of acute
stroke. Conventional perfusion analysis performs a deconvolution of the
measurements and thresholds the perfusion parameters to determine the tissue
status. We pursue a data-driven and deconvolution-free approach, where a deep
neural network learns to predict the final infarct volume directly from the
native CTP images and metadata such as the time parameters and treatment. This
would allow clinicians to simulate various treatments and gain insight into
predicted tissue status over time. We demonstrate on a multicenter dataset that
our approach is able to predict the final infarct and effectively uses the
metadata. An ablation study shows that using the native CTP measurements
instead of the deconvolved measurements improves the prediction.Comment: Accepted for publication in Medical Image Analysi
A Randomized Controlled Trial of Artemotil (Î-Arteether) in Zambian Children With Cerebral Malaria
The efficacy and safety of intramuscular artemotil (ARTECEFÂź) was compared to intravenous quinine in African children with cerebral malaria. This prospective block randomized open-label study was conducted at two centers in Zambia. Subjects were children aged 0 to 10 years of age with cerebral malaria and a Blantyre Coma Score of 2 or less. Ninety two children were studied; 48 received artemotil and 44 quinine. No significant differences in survival, coma resolution time, neurologic sequelae, parasite clearance time, and fever resolution time were seen between the two regimens. Rates for negative malaria smears one month after therapy were similar in both groups. Artemotil was a well-tolerated drug in the 48 patients in this study. It appears to be at least therapeutically equivalent to quinine for the treatment of pediatric cerebral malaria. It has the advantage of being able to be given intramuscularly once daily for only five days
Ab initio simulations of liquid NaSn alloys: Zintl anions and network formation
Using the Car-Parrinello technique, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations
are performed for liquid NaSn alloys in five different compositions (20, 40,
50, 57 and 80 % sodium). The obtained structure factors agree well with the
data from neutron scattering experiments. The measured prepeak in the structure
factor is reproduced qualitatively for most compositions. The calculated and
measured positions of all peaks show the same trend as function of the
composition.\\ The dynamic simulations also yield information about the
formation and stability of Sn clusters (Zintl anions) in the liquid. In our
simulations of compositions with 50 and 57 % sodium we observe the formation of
networks of tin atoms. Thus, isolated tin clusters are not stable in such
liquids. For the composition with 20 % tin only isolated atoms or dimers of tin
appear, ``octet compounds'' of one Sn atom surrounded by 4 Na atoms are not

From planning the port/city to planning the port-city : exploring the economic interface in European port cities
In last three decades, planning agencies of most ports have institutionally evolved into a (semi-) independent port authority. The rationale behind this process is that port authorities are able to react more quickly to changing logistical and spatial preferences of maritime firms, hence increasing the competitiveness of ports. Although these dedicated port authorities have proven to be largely successful, new economic, social, and environmental challenges are quickly catching up on these port governance models, and particularly leads to (spatial) policy âconflictsâ between port and city. This chapter starts by assessing this conflict and argue that the conflict is partly a result of dominantâoften also academicâspatial representations of the port city as two separate entities. To escape this divisive conception of contemporary port cities, this chapter presents a relational visualisation method that is able to analyse the economic interface between port and city. Based on our results, we reflect back on our proposition and argue that the core challenge today for researchers and policy makers is acknowledging the bias of port/city, being arguably a self-fulfilling prophecy. Carotid artery lumen segmentation in 3D free-hand ultrasound images using surface graph cuts
We present a new approach for automated segmentation of the carotid lumen bifurcation from 3D free-hand ultrasound using a 3D surface graph cut method. The method requires only the manual selection of single seed points in the internal, external, and common carotid arteries. Subsequently, the centerline between these points is automatically traced, and the optimal lumen surface is found around the centerline using graph cuts. To refine the result, the latter process was iterated. The method was tested on twelve carotid arteries from six subjects including three patients with a moderate carotid artery stenosis. Our method successfully segmented the lumen in all cases. We obtained an average dice overlap with respect to a manual segmentation of 84% for healthy volunteers. For the patient data, we obtained a dice overlap of 66.7%

In this issue, an excellent review is published on the imaging findings in non-neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy [1]. The authors also go into detail on imaging âbrain deathâ, an entity that is currently causing debate as far as the imaging approach is concerned. Brain death refers to the irreversible end of all brain activity due to necrosis of neurons. The diagnosis of brain death allows organ donation for transplantation or withdrawal of life support. Legal standard and/or practice guidelines are currently present in most countries. There is uniform agreement on the clinical neurological examination to evaluate absence of brain function. Improving data availability for brain image biobanking in healthy subjects: practice-based suggestions from an international multidisciplinary working group
International audienceBrain imaging is now ubiquitous in clinical practice and research. The case for bringing together large amounts of image data from well-characterised healthy subjects and those with a range of common brain diseases across the life course is now compelling. This report follows a meeting of international experts from multiple disciplines, all interested in brain image biobanking. The meeting included neuroimaging experts (clinical and non-clinical), computer scientists, epidemiologists, clinicians, ethicists, and lawyers involved in creating brain image banks. The meeting followed a structured format to discuss current and emerging brain image banks; applications such as atlases; conceptual and statistical problems (e.g. defining 'normality'); legal, ethical and technological issues (e.g. consents, potential for data linkage, data security, harmonisation, data storage and enabling of research data sharing). We summarise the lessons learned from the experiences of a wide range of individual image banks, and provide practical recommendations to enhance creation, use and reuse of neuroimaging data. Our aim is to maximise the benefit of the image data, provided voluntarily by research participants and funded by many organisations, for human health. Our ultimate vision is of a federated network of brain image biobanks accessible for large studies of brain structure and function

Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Patients With Primary Immune Regulatory Disorders (PIRD): A Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC) Survey.
Primary Immune Regulatory Disorders (PIRD) are an expanding group of diseases caused by gene defects in several different immune pathways, such as regulatory T cell function. Patients with PIRD develop clinical manifestations associated with diminished and exaggerated immune responses. Management of these patients is complicated; oftentimes immunosuppressive therapies are insufficient, and patients may require hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) for treatment. Analysis of HCT data in PIRD patients have previously focused on a single gene defect. This study surveyed transplanted patients with a phenotypic clinical picture consistent with PIRD treated in 33 Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium centers and European centers. Our data showed that PIRD patients often had immunodeficient and autoimmune features affecting multiple organ systems. Transplantation resulted in resolution of disease manifestations in more than half of the patients with an overall 5-years survival of 67%. This study, the first to encompass disorders across the PIRD spectrum, highlights the need for further research in PIRD management
