    Health at Work and Low-pay:a European Perspective

    This study investigates the relationship between health, working conditions and pay in Europe. In particular, we measure health at work using self-assessed indicators for overall, as well as physical and mental health, using the 2005 wave of the EWCS (European Working Conditions Survey) for 15 EU countries. We find that, controlling for personal characteristics, (adverse) working conditions are associated with poor health status – both physical and mental. Low pay plays a role, mainly for men and when interacted with working conditions, suggesting that stigma and deprivation effects may be correlated with health at work. We also account for the potential endogeneity arising from workers sorting by firms and job types with different working conditions, and provide evidence of a causal effect of (adverse) working conditions and (low) pay on health at the workplace.working conditions, physical and mental health, low-pay employment

    The Effect of Comprehensive Smoking Bans in European Workplaces

    In recent years many countries of the European Union (EU) have implemented comprehensive smoking bans to reduce exposure to tobacco smoke in public places and all indoor workplaces. Despite the intense public debate, research on the impact of smoking regulation on health, particularly within the workplace, is still very limited. In this paper, we use a Diff-in-Diff approach and comparable micro-data – for a large number of European countries – to evaluate the impact of national comprehensive smoking bans on both perceived workers' health and presence of respiratory problems within workplaces. Results show that the introduction of comprehensive smoking bans has a significant effect on workers' perceived health, particularly on the probability of exposure to smoke and fumes, also controlling for risk exposure. We also highlight some unintended effects of smoking bans in terms of mental distress, which counteract the positive impact on risk exposure and physical health.     Does Union Membership Really Reduce Job Satisfaction?

    We investigate the effect of union membership on job satisfaction. Whilst it is common to study the effects of union status on satisfaction treating individual membership as given, in this paper, we account for the endogenous selection induced by the sorting of workers into unionised jobs. Using linked employer-employee data from the 1998 British Workplace Employee Relations Survey, we address the question of how the membership decision is related to overall job satisfaction and to satisfaction with pay. Once the endogeneity of membership is accounted for, the marked difference in job satisfaction between unionised and non-unionised workers characterising raw data disappears, indicating that a selection effect, rather than a causal effect, explains the relationship.Job satisfaction, Trade unions, Linked employer-employee data

    Why so Unhappy? The Effects of Unionisation on Job Satisfaction

    We use linked employer-employee data to investigate the job satisfaction effect of unionisation in Britain. We depart from previous studies by developing a model that simultaneously controls for the endogeneity of union membership and union recognition. We show that a negative association between membership and satisfaction only emerges where there is a union recognised for bargaining, and that such an effect vanishes when the simultaneous selection into membership and recognition is taken into account. We also show that ignoring endogenous recognition would lead to conclude that membership has a positive effect on satisfaction. Our estimates indicate that the unobserved factors that lead to sorting across workplaces are negatively related to the ones determining membership and positively related with those generating satisfaction, a result that we interpret as being consistent with the existence of queues for union jobs.job satisfaction, union membership, union recognition, endogeneity

    Do Job Security Guarantees Work?

    We investigate the effect of employer job security guarantees on employee perceptions of jobsecurity. Using linked employer-employee data from the 1998 British Workplace EmployeeRelations Survey, we find job security guarantees reduce employee perceptions of jobinsecurity. This finding is robust to endogenous selection of job security guarantees byemployers engaging in organisational change and workforce reductions.     The wage expectations of European college students

    Expected earnings and expected returns to education are seen by labor economists as a major determinant of educational attainment. In spite of this, the empirical knowledge about expectations and their formation is scarce. In this paper we report the results of the first systematic study of the wage expectations of European college students. Our data are based on the replies to the same questionnaire by more than 6000 college students all over Europe. We study the determinants of wage expectations and expected employment probabilities, the variability of these expectations within a field of study and their variation across universities and fields. We also examine the trade-off between expected starting wages and wage growth. In the final section of the paper, we contrast expected returns to education with actual returns estimated from country-specific micro-data.     A record of a juvenile Porbeagle, Lamna nasus, in the coastal waters of Argentina is confirmed by DNA barcoding, since the specimen lacked some external diagnostic features.     Still searching for the wage curve: evidence from Germany and Italy

    This paper investigates the functioning of regional labour markets in Italy and Germany for different employee groups. In the light of high and persistent differences in unemployment and wage rates between the North and South of Italy and the West and East of Germany, we first derive theoretical hypotheses on group specific correlations between regional unemployment and individual wages. Using micro data on hourly wages properly matched to local unemployment rates, we specify and empirically test different wage equations. On the basis of our results, we find no evidence for the existence of a ?wage curve? in Italy. In the case of Germany, results are quite sensitive to the model specification and the employee group considered. In both countries, the reaction of wages to local unemployment varies significantly along the wage distribution, being more sensitive around the median quantiles. We conclude that there is no uniform wage curve and call for a differentiated analysis for various groups, taking into account the respective institutional setting. --wage curve,local labour markets,quantile regressions

    Salvar e inventar la memoria : El tratamiento de la memoria en las novelas iniciales de Antonio Muñoz Molina

    En el panorama actual de la novela posmoderna española, el tema de la memoria resulta un punto crucial en el entramado de la obra de la mayoría de los escritores. La visita al pasado para explorarlo y recrearlo, así como la reflexión y los juegos de indefinición y mezcla entre verdad y ficción distinguen a estas poéticas de las anteriores. Toda la obra de Antonio Muñoz Molina ahonda especialmente sobre el tema de la memoria, los recuerdos, el pasado, tanto de la historia de España como de la historia individual de sus personajes (que puede ser cualquiera de nosotros o ninguno). Las voces que se "escuchan" en sus diversos textos se dedican a bucear en el pasado, para poder no sólo salvarlo del olvido, sino también reinventarlo. De este modo, en este mundo posmoderno donde nada es fijo y definitivo, los textos del narrador español proponen los relatos de la memoria, compuesta de elementos "reales" y ficcionales, como eje estructurador de la propia identidad, siempre cambiante. Esta ponencia se propone rastrear aquellas alusiones a la memoria que se encuentran en las tres primeras novelas: Beatus Ille, El invierno en Lisboa y Beltenebros; alusiones que podrían considerarse como una teoría acabada y coherente sobre los procesos de la memoria y su función en la constitución de las subjetividades. Esta posible teoría es la que luego podrå rastrearse en la etapa narrativa y ensayística posterior de Muñoz Molin
