    Synthesis, Characterization, and Modeling of Naphthyl-Terminated sp Carbon Chains: Dinaphthylpolyynes

    We report a combined study on the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and theoretical modelling of a series of {\alpha},{\omega}-dinaphthylpolyynes. We synthesized this family of naphtyl-terminated sp carbon chains by reacting diiodoacetylene and 1-ethynylnaphthalene under the Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reaction conditions. By means of liquid chromatography (HPLC), we separated the products and recorded their electronic absorption spectra, which enabled us to identify the complete series of dinaphthylpolyynes Ar-C2n-Ar (with Ar = naphthyl group and n = number of acetilenic units) with n ranging from 2 to 6. The longest wavelength transition (LWT) in the electronic spectra of the dinaphthylpolyynes red shifts linearly with n away from the LWT of the bare termination. This result is also supported by DFT-LDA simulations. Finally, we probed the stability of the dinaphthylpolyynes in a solid-state precipitate by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).Comment: This document is the unedited Author's version of a Submitted Work that was subsequently accepted for publication in [J.     Effects of axial torsion on sp carbon atomic nanowires

    Ab-initio calculations within Density Functional Theory combined with experimental Raman spectra on cluster-beam deposited pure carbon films provide a consistent picture of sp-carbon chains stabilized by sp^3 or sp^2 terminations, the latter being sensitive to torsional strain. This unexplored effect promises many exciting applications since it allows one to modify the conductive states near the Fermi level and to switch on and off the on-chain pi-electron magnetism.Comment: in print in Phys Rev Let

    Growth of sp-sp² nanostructures in a carbon plasma

    The growth of sp and sp² nanostructures in a carbon plasma is simulated by tight-binding molecular dynamics. The simulations are arranged so as to mimic the cluster formation conditions typical of a pulsed microplasma cluster source which is used to grow nanostructured sp-sp² carbon films [L. Ravagnan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 216103 (2007)]. The formation of linear, ring, and fullerenelike objects in the carbon plasma is found to proceed through a very long multistep process. Therefore, tight-binding simulations of unprecedented duration have been performed by exploiting the disconnected topology of the simulated carbon plasma which made it possible to implement a computationally efficient divide-and-diagonalize procedure. Present simulations prove that topologically different structures can be formed in experiments, depending on the plasma temperature and density.     Vibrational characterization of dinaphthylpolyynes: A model system for the study of end-capped sp carbon chains

    We perform a systematic investigation of the resonance and vibrational properties of naphthyl-terminated sp carbon chains (dinaphthylpolyynes) by combined multi-wavelength resonant Raman (MWRR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, plus ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that the MWWR and FT-IR spectroscopies are particularly suited to identify chains of different lengths and different terminations, respectively. By DFT calculations, we further extend those findings to sp carbon chains end-capped by other organic structures. The present analysis shows that combined MWRR and FT-IR provide a powerful tool to draw a complete picture of chemically stabilized sp carbon chains.Comment: The following article has been accepted by Journal of Chemical Physics.     First report of the blood-feeding pattern in Aedes koreicus, a new invasive species in Europe

    Aedes koreicus is an invasive mosquito species which has been introduced into several European countries. Compared to other invasive Aedes mosquitoes, little is known of its biology and ecology. To determine Ae. koreicus’ vectorial capacity, it is essential to establish its feeding patterns and level of anthropophagy. We report on the blood‑feeding patterns of Ae. koreicus, examining the blood meal origin of engorged females and evaluating the influence of different biotic and abiotic factors on feeding behavior. Mosquitoes were collected in 23 sites in northern Italy by manual aspiration and BG‑sentinel traps; host availability was estimated by survey. The source of blood meals was identified using a nested PCR and by targeting and sequencing the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. In total, 352 Ae. koreicus engorged females were collected between 2013 and 2020 and host blood meals were determined from 299 blood‑fed mosquitoes (84.9%). Eleven host species were identified, with the highest prevalences being observed among roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) (N = 189, 63.2%) and humans (N = 46, 15.4%). Blood meals were mostly taken from roe deer in forested sites and from humans in urban areas, suggesting that this species can feed on different hosts according to local abundance. Two blood meals were identified from avian hosts and one from lizard. Ae. koreicus’ mammalophilic feeding pattern suggests that it may be a potential vector of pathogens establishing transmission cycles among mammals, whereas its role as a bridge vector between mammals and birds could be negligibl

    Oxidation of carbynes: signatures in infrared spectra

    We report and solidly interpret the infrared spectrum of both pristine and oxidized carbynes embedded in a pure-carbon matrix. The spectra probe separately the effects of oxidation on sp- and on sp 2-hybridized carbon, and provide information on the stability of the different structures in an oxidizing atmosphere. The final products are mostly short end-oxidized carbynes anchored with a double bond to sp 2 fragments, plus an oxidized sp 2 amorphous matrix. Our results have important implications for the realization of carbyne-based nano-electronics devices and highlight the active participation of carbynes in astrochemical reactions where they act as carbon source for the promotion of more complex organic species

    Poly(methyl methacrylate) - Palladium clusters nanocomposite formation by supersonic cluster beam deposition: a method for microstructured metallization of polymer surfaces

    Nanocomposite films were fabricated by supersonic cluster beam deposition (SCBD) of palladium clusters on Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) surfaces. The evolution of the electrical conductance with cluster coverage and microscopy analysis show that Pd cluster are implanted in the polymer and form a continuous layer extending for several tens of nanometers beneath the polymer surface. This allows the deposition, using stencil masks, of cluster-assembled Pd microstructures on PMMA showing a remarkably high adhesion compared to metallic films obtained by thermal evaporation. These results suggest that SCBD is a promising tool for the fabrication of metallic microstructures on flexible polymeric substrates.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    First report in italy of the exotic mosquito species Aedes (Finlaya) koreicus, a potential vector of arboviruses and filariae

    BACKGROUND: In the Veneto region (north-eastern Italy) an entomological surveillance system has been implemented since the introduction of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in 1991. During the routine monitoring activity in a tiger mosquito-free area, an unexpected mosquito was noticed, which clearly did not belong to the recorded Italian fauna. FINDINGS: At the end of May 2011, twelve larvae and pupae were collected in a small village in Belluno province (Veneto region) from a single manhole. Ten adults reared in the laboratory were morphologically and genetically identified as Aedes (Finlaya) koreicus (Edwards, 1917), a species native to Southeast Asia. The subsequent investigations carried out in the following months in the same village provided evidence that this species had become established locally. Entomological and epidemiological investigations are currently ongoing in the surrounding area, to verify the eventual extension of the species outside the village and to trace back the route of entry into Italy. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report in Italy of the introduction of the exotic mosquito Ae. koreicus. This species has been shown experimentally to be competent in the transmission of the Japanese encephalitis virus and of the dog heartworm Dirofilaria immitis and is considered a potential vector of other arboviruses. Thus, the establishment of this species may increase the current risk or pose new potential threats, for human and animal health. This finding considerably complicates the entomological monitoring of the Asian tiger mosquito Ae. albopictus in Italy and stresses the importance of implementing the entomological surveillance for the early detection of and the rapid response against invasive mosquito species
