beta decay of Si-38,Si-40 (T-z =+5,+6) to low-lying core excited states in odd-odd P-38,P-40 isotopes

Low-lying excited states in 38,40P have been identified in the β decay of Tz=+5,+6, 38,40Si. Based on the allowed nature of the Gamow-Teller (GT) decay observed, these states are assigned spin and parity of 1+ and are core-excited 1p1h intruder states with a parity opposite to the ground state. The occurrence of intruder states at low energies highlights the importance of pairing and quadrupole correlation energies in lowering the intruder states despite the N=20 shell gap. Configuration interaction shell model calculations with the state-of-art SDPF-MU effective interaction were performed to understand the structure of these 1p1h states in the even-A phosphorus isotopes. States in 40P with N=25 were found to have very complex configurations involving all the fp orbitals leading to deformed states as seen in neutron-rich nuclei with N≈28. The calculated GT matrix elements for the β decay highlight the dominance of the decay of the core neutrons rather than the valence neutrons.status: publishe

Progress in bipolar disorder drug design toward the development of novel therapeutic targets: a clinician's perspective

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a considerable burden to the affected individual. The need for novel drug targets and improved drug design (DD) in BD is therefore clear. Areas covered: The following article provides a brief, narrative, clinician-oriented overview of the most promising novel pharmacological targets for BD along with a concise overview regarding the general DD process and the unmet needs relevant to BD. Expert opinion: A number of novel potential drug targets have been investigated. With the notable exception of the kynurenine pathway, available evidence is too scarce to highlight a definitive roadmap for forthcoming DD in BD. BD itself may present with different facets, as it is a polymorphic clinical spectrum. Therefore, promoting clinical-case stratification should be based on precision medicine, rather than on novel biological targets. Furthermore, the full release of raw study data to the scientific community and the development of uniform clinical trial standards (including more realistic outcomes) should be promoted to facilitate the DD process in BD

Evolution of single-particle structure near the N=20 island of inversion

The single-particle properties of 29Mg have been investigated via a measurement of the 28Mg(d,p)29Mg reaction, in inverse kinematics, using the ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer. The negative-parity intruder states from the f p shell have been identified and used to benchmark modern shell-model calculations. The systematic data on the single-particle centroids along the N = 17 isotones show good agreement with shell-model predictions in describing the observed trends from stability toward 25O. However, there is also evidence that the effect of the finite geometry of the nuclear potential is playing a role on the behavior of the p orbitals near the particle-emission threshold.status: Published onlin
