A new species of Opisthoteuthis, O. dongshaensis sp nov., from the South China Sea (Octopoda: Cirrata: Opisthoteuthidae)

A new species of the cirrate octopod Opisthoteuthis dongshaensis sp. nov. is described from the vicinity of the Dong Sha Is., South China Sea. The species is unique in the mature males having enlarged suckers on the distal field only on arms III and IV. Suckers on the distal field of arms I and II of mature males are not enlarged. Fermi Liquid Properties of a Two Dimensional Electron System With the Fermi Level Near a van Hove Singularity
We use a diagrammatic approach to study low energy physics of a two
dimensional electron system where the Fermi level is near van-Hove singularies
in the energy spectrum. We find that in most regions of the
phase diagram the system behaves as a normal Fermi liquid rather than a
marginal Fermi liquid. Particularly, the imaginary part of the self energy is
much smaller than the excitation energy, which implies well defined
quasiparticle excitations, and single particle properties are only weakly
affected by the presence of the van-Hove singularities. The relevance to high
temperature superconductivity is also discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 4 postscript figure
Sum rules and energy scales in the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x
The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule has been applied to the temperature
dependence of the in-plane optical conductivity of optimally-doped
YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95} and underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.60}. Within the accuracy of the
experiment, the sum rule is obeyed in both materials. However, the energy scale
\omega_c required to recover the full strength of the superfluid \rho_s in the
two materials is dramatically different; \omega_c \simeq 800 cm^{-1} in the
optimally doped system (close to twice the maximum of the superconducting gap,
2\Delta_0), but \omega_c \gtrsim 5000 cm^{-1} in the underdoped system. In both
materials, the normal-state scattering rate close to the critical temperature
is small, \Gamma < 2\Delta_0, so that the materials are not in the dirty limit
and the relevant energy scale for \rho_s in a BCS material should be twice the
energy gap. The FGT sum rule in the optimally-doped material suggests that the
majority of the spectral weight of the condensate comes from energies below
2\Delta_0, which is consistent with a BCS material in which the condensate
originates from a Fermi liquid normal state. In the underdoped material the
larger energy scale may be a result of the non-Fermi liquid nature of the
normal state. The dramatically different energy scales suggest that the nature
of the normal state creates specific conditions for observing the different
aspects of what is presumably a central mechanism for superconductivity in

Preventive effects of Spirulina platensis on skeletal muscle damage under exercise-induced oxidative stress
The effects of spirulina supplementation on preventing skeletal muscle damage on untrained human beings were examined. Sixteen students volunteered to take Spirulina platensis in addition to their normal diet for 3-weeks. Blood samples were taken after finishing the Bruce incremental treadmill exercise before and after treatment. The results showed that plasma concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly decreased after supplementation with spirulina (P < 0.05). The activity of blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly raised after supplementation with spirulina or soy protein (P < 0.05). Both of the blood glutathione peroxidaes (GP (x) ) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were significantly different between spirulina and soy protein supplementation by an ANCOVA analysis (P < 0.05). In addition, the lactate (LA) concentration was higher and the time to exhaustion (TE) was significantly extended in the spirulina trail (P < 0.05). These results suggest that ingestion of S. platensis showed preventive effect of the skeletal muscle damage and that probably led to postponement of the time of exhaustion during the all-out exercise
Doppler-free frequency modulation spectroscopy of atomic erbium in a hollow cathode discharge cell
The erbium atomic system is a promising candidate for an atomic Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms with a non-vanishing orbital angular momentum ()
of the electronic ground state. In this paper we report on the frequency
stabilization of a blue external cavity diode laser system on the 400.91
laser cooling transition of atomic erbium. Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy
is applied within a hollow cathode discharge tube to the corresponding
electronic transition of several of the erbium isotopes. Using the technique of
frequency modulation spectroscopy, a zero-crossing error signal is produced to
lock the diode laser frequency on the atomic erbium resonance. The latter is
taken as a reference laser to which a second main laser system, used for laser
cooling of atomic erbium, is frequency stabilized
Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition

The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites.This work is financially supported by the

Optimized loading of an optical dipole trap for the production of Chromium BECs
We report on a strategy to maximize the number of chromium atoms transferred
from a magneto-optical trap into an optical trap through accumulation in
metastable states via strong optical pumping. We analyse how the number of
atoms in a chromium Bose Einstein condensate can be raised by a proper handling
of the metastable state populations. Four laser diodes have been implemented to
address the four levels that are populated during the MOT phase. The individual
importance of each state is specified. To stabilize two of our laser diode, we
have developed a simple ultrastable passive reference cavity whose long term
stability is better than 1 MHz
Prospects of Scintillating Crystal Detector in Low-Energy Low-Background Experiments
Scintillating crystal detector offers potential advantages in low-energy
(keV-MeV range) low-background experiments for particle physics and
astrophysics. The merits are discussed using CsI(Tl) crystal as illustrations.
The various physics topics which can be pursued with this detector technology

Nonconstant electronic density of states tunneling inversion for A15 superconductors: Nb3Sn
We re-examine the tunneling data on A15 superconductors by performing a
generalized McMillan-Rowell tunneling inversion that incorporates a nonconstant
electronic density of states obtained from band-structure calculations. For
Nb3Sn, we find that the fit to the experimental data can be slightly improved
by taking into account the sharp structure in the density of states, but it is
likely that such an analysis alone is not enough to completely explain the
superconducting tunneling characteristics of this material. Nevertheless, the
extracted Eliashberg function displays a number of features expected to be
present for the highest quality Nb3Sn samples.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Basis Functions for Linear-Scaling First-Principles Calculations
In the framework of a recently reported linear-scaling method for
density-functional-pseudopotential calculations, we investigate the use of
localized basis functions for such work. We propose a basis set in which each
local orbital is represented in terms of an array of `blip functions'' on the
points of a grid. We analyze the relation between blip-function basis sets and
the plane-wave basis used in standard pseudopotential methods, derive criteria
for the approximate equivalence of the two, and describe practical tests of
these criteria. Techniques are presented for using blip-function basis sets in
linear-scaling calculations, and numerical tests of these techniques are
reported for Si crystal using both local and non-local pseudopotentials. We
find rapid convergence of the total energy to the values given by standard
plane-wave calculations as the radius of the linear-scaling localized orbitals
