    Preservice Teachers’ Impact on Student Learning

    The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate preservice teachers’ impact on P-5 student learning. This quantitative study included 1,640 P-5 students taught by 68 preservice teachers in three practicum tiers who responded to our request and submitted P-5 students’ pre- and post- assessment results. A t test was used to examine differences in the normalized gain scores and a set of regression tests to investigate the differences in the student learning outcomes among variables. The results indicate significant difference in P-5 student learning outcomes after the unit instruction by preservice teachers and no difference among variables, which suggests that P-5 students perform equally well taught by pre-service teachers in all tiers.     Content Validity of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium\u27s (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders: To What Extent Do ISLLC Skill Indicators Describe School Leaders\u27 Instructional Leadership Work?

    Most validity studies of ISLLC standards and indicators rely heavily on focus groups and perceptual surveys. This study included self-report and observational data on principals’ use of time. A content analysis tested ISLLC’s descriptions of instructional leadership with a related set of Kentucky’s Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI) as well as across the observational job analyses of two sets of principals: (a) five elementary and secondary principals in a typical rural district and (b) five matched for school characteristics from high performing schools on Kentucky’s assessment system. Results reinforce early studies revealing the intense and fragmented nature of principals’ work, but results question whether ISLLC provides sufficient guidance for principals’ instructional leadership performance as compared to Kentucky’s SISI. ISLLC seems to offer better descriptions of legal and ethical standards as well as guidance on building community internally and externally to the school; however, ISLLC is silent about principals’ interactions with students

    Curved DNA molecules migrate anomalously slowly in free solution

    The electrophoretic mobility of a curved DNA restriction fragment taken from the VP1 gene in the SV40 minichromosome has been measured in polyacrylamide gels and free solution, using capillary electrophoresis. The 199 bp restriction fragment has an apparent bend angle of 46 ± 2° located at SV40 sequence position 1922 ± 2 bp [Lu Y.J., Weers B.D. and Stellwagen N. C. (2005) Biophys. J., 88, 1191–1206]. The ‘curvature module’ surrounding the apparent bend center contains five unevenly spaced A- and T-tracts, which are responsible for the observed curvature. The parent 199 bp fragment and sequence mutants containing at least one A-tract in the curvature module migrate anomalously slowly in free solution, as well as in polyacrylamide gels. Hence, the anomalously slow mobilities observed for curved DNA molecules in polyacrylamide gels are due in part to their anomalously slow mobilities in free solution. Analysis of the gel and free solution mobility decrements indicates that each A- or T-tract contributes independently, but not equally, to the curvature of the 199 bp fragment and its A-tract mutants. The relative contribution of each A- or T-tract to the observed curvature depends on its spacing with respect to the first A-tract in the curvature module

    Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in Canada

    The purpose of this study was to identify physical education (PE) teacher educators and examine physical education teacher education (PETE) programs presently offered at undergraduate degree-granting Canadian universities. The investigation was conceptualized by issues related to the dislodging of PETE from a central to a marginal role in higher education, contrasting discourses, and the education of children and youth in a post-modern society. In an effort to examine the worldview orientation, underpinning discourses, curricula, structure, and organization of Canada's programs, 36 PE teacher educators from 20 universities completed an online survey. Results enabled a profile of Canada's PE teacher educators and the PETE programs in which they work. Collectively, the findings suggest a need for critical consideration and/or revisiting of programs in light of changing societal and student needs for global, socially, and culturally responsive PETE.Key words: physical education teacher education (PETE), teacher educatio
