This article proposes a discussion of the distribution of the two grammatical suffixes -VU- et -JU-, which are both found, in the eastern arctic Inuit dialects, in verbs used in the declarative form. It shows, among others, that contrary to what most grammarians of inuktitut believe these two suffixes have a distinct semantic representation in tongue, observable through their particular uses in discourse

Mechanical properties of the NiTi Memoria Leaf Spring Activated Expander (NiTi MLSAE) for maxillary transverse discrepancy correction : an in-vitro study

To determine the mechanical properties of the NiTi Memoria® Leaf Spring Activated Expander (NiTi MLSAE) in two forms, unaltered (unbent) and altered (bent) to mimic clinical use. This in-vitro pilot study was conducted using eight NiTi MLSAE expanders (American Tooth Industries, Oxnard, California) representing four force magnitudes: 10mm 500g, 10mm 900g, 6mm 450g and 6mm 900g models. Two experiments were performed: the first tested the expanders in their unbent form and the second tested them after they were bent by one experienced technician. All expanders were adapted to a standard three dimensional printed maxillary study model. A Dillion Quantrol 500N (110lbf) load cell and a custom-made fixturing apparatus was used to determine the amount of expansive forces delivered. Prior to testing, the ligation compressing the NiTi MLSAE leaves was cut to allow the appliances to expand to their original form. Emperor? (force) Software was used to measure the expansion forces. The average expansion forces generated by the expanders were: unaltered = 897.4g (8.8N) and bent = 877.0g (8.6N) for the 10mm 900g model, unaltered = 489.5g (4.8N) and bent = 479.3g (4.7N) for the 10mm 500g model, unaltered = 458.9g (4.5N) and bent = 438.5g (4.3N) for the 6mm 450g model, and unaltered = 805.6g (7.9N) and bent = 785.2g (7.7N) for the 6mm 900g model. Regardless of whether the expander was straight or bent, the forces generated by the 10mm 900g, 10mm 500g and 6mm 450g Ni-Ti MLSAEs correlated with the benchmark study conducted by the manufacturer. However, the forces generated by the 6mm 900g Ni-Ti MLSAE were less than the data published by the manufacturer. Binding was observed when the expanders were manipulated to mimic clinical use, and this may account for the reported lower expansion force

Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics for the Treatment of Malignant Disease

    Get PDF
The employment of the immune system to treat malignant disease represents an active area of biomedical research. The specificity of the immune response and potential for establishing long-term tumor immunity compels researchers to continue investigations into immunotherapeutic approaches for cancer. A number of immunotherapeutic strategies have arisen for the treatment of malignant disease, including various vaccination schemes, cytokine therapy, adoptive cellular therapy, and monoclonal antibody therapy. This paper describes each of these strategies and discusses some of the associated successes and limitations. Emphasis is placed on the integration of techniques to promote optimal scenarios for eliminating cancer

Lanthanum halide nanoparticle scintillators for nuclear radiation detection

Nanoparticles with sizesscintillators, in order to determine the viability of using scintillators employing nanostructured lanthanum trifluoride. Preliminary results of this investigation are consistent with the idea that these materials have an intrinsic response to nuclear radiation that may be correlated to the energy of the incident radiation

    Delay/Doppler-Mapping GPS-Reflection Remote-Sensing System

A radio receiver system that features enhanced capabilities for remote sensing by use of reflected Global Positioning System (GPS) signals has been developed. This system was designed primarily for ocean altimetry, but can also be used for scatterometry and bistatic synthetic-aperture radar imaging. Moreover, it could readily be adapted to utilize navigation-satellite systems other than the GPS, including the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System GLONASS) and the proposed European Galileo system. This remote-sensing system offers both advantages and disadvantages over traditional radar altimeters: One advantage of GPS-reflection systems is that they cost less because there is no need to transmit signals. Another advantage is that there are more simultaneous measurement opportunities - one for each GPS satellite in view. The primary disadvantage is that in comparison with radar signals, GPS signals are weaker, necessitating larger antennas and/or longer observations. This GPS-reflection remote-sensing system was tested in aircraft and made to record and process both (1) signals coming directly from GPS satellites by means of an upward-looking antenna and (2) GPS signals reflected from the ground by means of a downward-looking antenna. In addition to performing conventional GPS processing, the system records raw signals for postprocessing as required

Evaluation of menogaril in renal cell carcinoma

The Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) studied the response rate and toxicity of menogaril (200 mg/m 2 i.v. q 28 days) in patients with advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma. During the early stage of the trial two partial responses were seen in the first 20 treated patients, and an additional 36 evaluable patients were studied. Three of 56 (5%) evaluable patients achieved partial responses. Significant white cell toxicity was observed. Mild or moderate degrees of thrombocytopenia, gastrointestinal side effects, alopecia and phlebitis occurred. No cardiac toxicity was noted. The low response rate suggests that menogaril in this dose schedule has no role in the treatment of patients with advanced metastatic renal cancer.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45344/1/10637_2004_Article_BF00171987.pd

Does amyloid deposition produce a specific atrophic signature in cognitively normal subjects?☆

The objective of our study was to evaluate whether cognitively normal (CN) elderly participants showing elevated cortical beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition have a consistent neuroanatomical signature of brain atrophy that may characterize preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). 115 CN participants who were Aβ-positive (CN +) by amyloid PET imaging; 115 CN participants who were Aβ-negative (CN −); and 88 Aβ-positive mild cognitive impairment or AD participants (MCI/AD +) were identified. Cortical thickness (FreeSurfer) and gray matter volume (SPM5) were measured for 28 regions-of-interest (ROIs) across the brain and compared across groups. ROIs that best discriminated CN − from CN + differed for FreeSurfer cortical thickness and SPM5 gray matter volume. Group-wise discrimination was poor with a high degree of uncertainty in terms of the rank ordering of ROIs. In contrast, both techniques showed strong and consistent findings comparing MCI/AD + to both CN − and CN + groups, with entorhinal cortex, middle and inferior temporal lobe, inferior parietal lobe, and hippocampus providing the best discrimination for both techniques. Concordance across techniques was higher for the CN − and CN + versus MCI/AD + comparisons, compared to the CN − versus CN + comparison. The weak and inconsistent nature of the findings across technique in this study cast doubt on the existence of a reliable neuroanatomical signature of preclinical AD in elderly PiB-positive CN participants
