    Lead in Kuala Lumpur Urban Dust

    A preliminary survey of lead in Kuala Lumpur urban dust was carried out. Lead levels of22.9 to 6986.6 JJgg-l were obtained, depending on the locations where.the dust was collected. There is a direct relationship between lead level in dust and traffic density. The amount of lead leachable by rain water is sufficiently high to warrant further investigation

    The finite size effects of the dynamical structure factors in the XXZ-model are studied in the euclidean time (τ)(\tau)-representation. Away from the critical momentum p=πp=\pi finite size effects turn out to be small except for the large τ\tau limit. The large finite size effects at the critical momentum p=πp=\pi signal the emergence of infrared singularities in the spectral (ω)(\omega)-representation of the dynamical structure factors.Comment: PostScript file with 12 pages + 11 figures uuencoded compresse

    Effect of forward motion on engine noise

    Methods used to determine a procedure for correcting static engine data for the effects of forward motion are described. Data were analyzed from airplane flyover and static-engine tests with a JT8D-109 low-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-9-30, with a CF6-6D high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-10-10, and with a JT9D-59A high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-10-40. The observed differences between the static and the flyover data bases are discussed in terms of noise generation, convective amplification, atmospheric propagation, and engine installation. The results indicate that each noise source must be adjusted separately for forward-motion and installation effects and then projected to flight conditions as a function of source-path angle, directivity angle, and acoustic range relative to the microphones on the ground

    Real space first-principles derived semiempirical pseudopotentials applied to tunneling magnetoresistance

    In this letter we present a real space density functional theory (DFT) localized basis set semi-empirical pseudopotential (SEP) approach. The method is applied to iron and magnesium oxide, where bulk SEP and local spin density approximation (LSDA) band structure calculations are shown to agree within approximately 0.1 eV. Subsequently we investigate the qualitative transferability of bulk derived SEPs to Fe/MgO/Fe tunnel junctions. We find that the SEP method is particularly well suited to address the tight binding transferability problem because the transferability error at the interface can be characterized not only in orbital space (via the interface local density of states) but also in real space (via the system potential). To achieve a quantitative parameterization, we introduce the notion of ghost semi-empirical pseudopotentials extracted from the first-principles calculated Fe/MgO bonding interface. Such interface corrections are shown to be particularly necessary for barrier widths in the range of 1 nm, where interface states on opposite sides of the barrier couple effectively and play a important role in the transmission characteristics. In general the results underscore the need for separate tight binding interface and bulk parameter sets when modeling conduction through thin heterojunctions on the nanoscale.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physic

    Production and Equilibration of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Chromoelectric Field and Minijets

    Production and equilibration of quark-gluon plasma are studied within the color flux-tube model, at the RHIC and LHC energies. Non-Abelian relativistic transport equations for quarks, antiquarks and gluons, are solved in the extended phase space which includes coordinates, momenta and color. Before the chromoelectric field is formed, hard and semihard partons are produced via minijets which provide the initial conditions necessary to solve the transport equations. The model predicts that in spite of the vast difference between the RHIC and LHC incident energies, once the local equilibrium is reached, the energy densities, the number densities and the temperatures at the two machines may not be very different from each other. The minijet input significantly alters the evolution of the deconfined matter, unless the color field is too strong. For the input parameters used here the equilibration time is estimated to be 1\sim 1 fm at RHIC and 0.5\sim 0.5 fm at LHC, measured from the instant when the two colliding nuclei have just passed through each other. The temperature at equilibration is found to be 250\sim 250 MeV at RHIC and 300\sim 300 MeV at LHC.Comment: version to appear in Phys. Rev.     Spitzer/MIPS Observations of Stars in the Beta Pictoris Moving Group

    We present Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) observations at 24 and 70 microns for 30 stars, and at 160 microns for a subset of 12 stars, in the nearby (~30 pc), young (~12 Myr) Beta Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG). In several cases, the new MIPS measurements resolve source confusion and background contamination issues in the IRAS data for this sample. We find that 7 members have 24 micron excesses, implying a debris disk fraction of 23%, and that at least 11 have 70 micron excesses (disk fraction of >=37%). Five disks are detected at 160 microns (out of a biased sample of 12 stars observed), with a range of 160/70 flux ratios. The disk fraction at 24 and 70 microns, and the size of the excesses measured at each wavelength, are both consistent with an "inside-out" infrared excess decrease with time, wherein the shorter-wavelength excesses disappear before longer-wavelength excesses, and consistent with the overall decrease of infrared excess frequency with stellar age, as seen in Spitzer studies of other young stellar groups. Assuming that the infrared excesses are entirely due to circumstellar disks, we characterize the disk properties using simple models and fractional infrared luminosities. Optically thick disks, seen in the younger TW Hya and eta Cha associations, are entirely absent in the BPMG. Additional flux density measurements at 24 and 70 microns are reported for nine Tucanae-Horologium Association member stars. Since this is <20% of the association membership, limited analysis on the complete disk fraction of this association is possible.Comment: Accepted for Ap

    KK Parity in Warped Extra Dimension

    We construct models with a Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity in a five- dimensional warped geometry, in an attempt to address the little hierarchy problem present in setups with bulk Standard Model fields. The lightest KK particle (LKP) is stable and can play the role of dark matter. We consider the possibilities of gluing two identical slices of 5D AdS in either the UV (IR-UV-IR model) or the IR region (UV-IR-UV model) and discuss the model-building issues as well as phenomenological properties in both cases. In particular, we find that the UV-IR-UV model is not gravitationally stable and that additional mechanisms might be required in the IR-UV-IR model in order to address flavor issues. Collider signals of the warped KK parity are different from either the conventional warped extra dimension without KK parity, in which the new particles are not necessarily pair-produced, or the KK parity in flat universal extra dimensions, where each KK level is nearly degenerate in mass. Dark matter and collider properties of a TeV mass KK Z gauge boson as the LKP are discussed.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figure

    The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement: Looking Ahead to the Next Steps

    Pressure has been building for the conclusion of the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. Getting the deal done is important, but the TPP is not just another free trade agreement (FTA). It represents the chance to set a trade agenda for the future across a wide range of topics for countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This means that the agreement should not be settled in haste. More importantly, it also means that key decisions need to be reached about broader issues related to the institutional structure of the TPP. These decisions must be made now, before the deal is closed, on issues such as how to create the TPP as a living agreement, the formation of a TPP Secretariat, and the clarification of entry conditions for future members such as the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These choices must be made deliberately and carefully even while officials are struggling with reaching closure on the most highly sensitive issues still remaining in the agreement. It will not be easy, but wise decisions are necessary now to ensure the long-term success of the TPP

    Plasmon tunability in metallodielectric metamaterials

    The dielectric properties of metamaterials consisting of periodically arranged metallic nanoparticles of spherical shape are calculated by rigorously solving Maxwell's equations. Effective dielectric functions are obtained by comparing the reflectivity of planar surfaces limiting these materials with Fresnel's formulas for equivalent homogeneous media, showing mixing and splitting of individual-particle modes due to inter-particle interaction. Detailed results for simple cubic and fcc crystals of aluminum spheres in vacuum, silver spheres in vacuum, and silver spheres in a silicon matrix are presented. The filling fraction of the metal f is shown to determine the position of the plasmon modes of these metamaterials. Significant deviations are observed with respect to Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory for large f, and multiple plasmons are predicted to exist in contrast to Maxwell-Garnett theory.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Optically thin cooling gas at most temperatures above 30K will make condensations by pressure pushing material into cool dense regions. This works without gravity. Cooling condensations will flatten and become planar/similarity solutions. Most star formation may start from cooling condensations - with gravity only important in the later stages. The idea that some of the dark matter could be pristine white dwarfs that condensed slowly on to planetary sized seeds without firing nuclear reactions is found lacking. However, recent observations indicate fifty times more halo white dwarfs than have been previously acknowledged; enough to make the halo fraction observed as MACHOS.
