Titanium honeycomb structure
A brazed titanium honeycomb sandwich system for supersonic transport wing cover panels provides the most efficient structure spanwise, chordwise, and loadwise. Flutter testing shows that high wing stiffness is most efficient in a sandwich structure. This structure also provides good thermal insulation if liquid fuel is carried in direct contact with the wing structure in integral fuel tanks
Egg-laying substrate selection for optimal camouflage by quail
Camouflage is conferred by background matching and disruption, which are both affected by microhabitat [1]. However, microhabitat selection that enhances camouflage has only been demonstrated in species with discrete phenotypic morphs [2 and 3]. For most animals, phenotypic variation is continuous [4 and 5]; here we explore whether such individuals can select microhabitats to best exploit camouflage. We use substrate selection in a ground-nesting bird (Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica). For such species, threat from visual predators is high [6] and egg appearance shows strong between-female variation [7]. In quail, variation in appearance is particularly obvious in the amount of dark maculation on the light-colored shell [8]. When given a choice, birds consistently selected laying substrates that made visual detection of their egg outline most challenging. However, the strategy for maximizing camouflage varied with the degree of egg maculation. Females laying heavily maculated eggs selected the substrate that more closely matched egg maculation color properties, leading to camouflage through disruptive coloration. For lightly maculated eggs, females chose a substrate that best matched their egg background coloration, suggesting background matching. Our results show that quail “know” their individual egg patterning and seek out a nest position that provides most effective camouflage for their individual phenotyp

Notes on the Bees of Southern Maine: Anthophoridae, Halictoididae, Macropidae and Panurgidae
The Anthophoridae, which are represented by numerous species in the Middle
States, become comparatively rare in northern New England. At Waldoboro in
southern Maine there have been taken as the result of much diligent collecting only
five species of Melissodes and one of Clisodon. With few exceptions, which will
be noted under the respective species, they are visitors in this locality of the Compositae
and fly during midsummer and early autumn. With the exception of Melissodes
desponsa Sm., which is rather common, they might easily escape the attention
of the general entomological collector
Continuing a Chandra Survey of Quasar Radio Jets
We are conducting an X-ray survey of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) with
extended radio structures. We summarize our results from the first stage of our
survey, then we present findings from its continuation.
We have discovered jet X-ray emission from 12 of our first 20 Chandra
targets, establishing that strong 0.5-7.0 keV emission is a common feature of
FSRQ jets. The X-ray morphology is varied, but in general closely matches the
radio structure until the first sharp radio bend. In the sources with optical
data as well as X-ray detections we rule out simple synchrotron models for
X-ray emission, suggesting these systems may instead be dominated by inverse
Compton (IC) scattering. Fitting models of IC scattering of cosmic microwave
background photons suggests that these jets are aligned within a few degrees of
our line of sight, with bulk Lorentz factors of a few to ten and magnetic
fields a bit stronger than G.
In the weeks prior to this meeting, we have discovered two new X-ray jets at
. One (PKS B1055+201) has a dramatic, -long jet. The other (PKS
B1421-490) appears unremarkable at radio frequencies, but at higher frequencies
the jet is uniquely powerful: its optically-dominated, with jet/core flux

A Chandra Survey of Quasar Jets: First Results
We present results from Chandra X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of a
flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like
extended structure. Twelve of twenty quasar jets are detected in 5 ks ACIS-S
exposures. The quasars without X-ray jets are not significantly different from
those in the sample with detected jets except that the extended radio emission
is generally fainter. New radio maps are combined with the X-ray images in
order to elucidate the relation between radio and X-ray emission in spatially
resolved structures. We find a variety of morphologies, including long straight
jets and bends up to 90 degrees. All X-ray jets are one-sided although the
radio images used for source selection often show lobes opposite the X-ray
jets. The FR II X-ray jets can all be interpreted as inverse Compton scattering
of cosmic microwave background photons by electrons in large-scale relativistic
jets although deeper observations are required to test this interpretation in
detail. Applying this interpretation to the jets as a population, we find that
the jets would be aligned to within 30 degrees of the line of sight generally,
assuming that the bulk Lorentz factor of the jets is 10.Comment: 25 pages with 5 pages of color figures; accepted for publication in

Observations of Intrahour Variable Quasars: Scattering in our Galactic Neighbourhood
Interstellar scintillation (ISS) has been established as the cause of the
random variations seen at centimetre wavelengths in many compact radio sources
on timescales of a day or less. Observations of ISS can be used to probe
structure both in the ionized insterstellar medium of the Galaxy, and in the
extragalactic sources themselves, down to microarcsecond scales. A few quasars
have been found to show large amplitude scintillations on unusually rapid,
intrahour timescales. This has been shown to be due to weak scattering in very
local Galactic ``screens'', within a few tens of parsec of the Sun. The short
variability timescales allow detailed study of the scintillation properties in
relatively short observing periods with compact interferometric arrays. The
three best-studied ``intrahour variable'' quasars, PKS 0405-385, J1819+3845 and
PKS 1257-326, have been instrumental in establishing ISS as the principal cause
of intraday variability at centimetre wavelengths. Here we review the relevant

A Forced-Choice Rating Scale for College Instructors
The purpose of this study was to construct a forced-choice rating scale for evaluating students\u27 opinions of college instructors. The scale constructed consists of 20 tetrads, or groups of 4 statements descriptive of instructors. These statements were chosen so that a pair of favorable items, both appearing to be equally favorable, and a pair of unfavorable items, both appearing to be equally unfavorable, make up each tetrad. From each tetrad the rater must choose the item most characteristic and the item least characteristic of the ratee. The reason for choosing items in this manner can be seen in Sisson\u27s statement of the basic assumptions underlying the forced-choice method, which was used in rating Army officers
The theoretical and practical determination of clinical cut-offs for the British Sign Language versions of PHQ-9 and GAD-7.
BACKGROUND: The PHQ-9 and the GAD-7 assess depression and anxiety respectively. There are standardised, reliability-tested versions in BSL (British Sign Language) that are used with Deaf users of the IAPT service. The aim of this study is to determine their appropriate clinical cut-offs when used with Deaf people who sign and to examine the operating characteristics for PHQ-9 BSL and GAD-7 BSL with a clinical Deaf population. METHODS: Two datasets were compared: (i) dataset (n = 502) from a specialist IAPT service for Deaf people; and (ii) dataset (n = 85) from our existing study of Deaf people who self-reported having no mental health difficulties. Parameter estimates, with the precision of AUC value, sensitivity, specificity, positive predicted value (ppv) and negative predicted value (npv), were carried out to provide the details of the clinical cut-offs. Three statistical choices were included: Maximising (Youden: maximising sensitivity + specificity), Equalising (Sensitivity = Specificity) and Prioritising treatment (False Negative twice as bad as False Positive). Standard measures (as defined by IAPT) were applied to examine caseness, recovery, reliable change and reliable recovery for the first dataset. RESULTS: The clinical cut-offs for PHQ-9 BSL and GAD-7 BSL are 8 and 6 respectively. This compares with the original English version cut-offs in the hearing population of 10 and 8 respectively. The three different statistical choices for calculating clinical cut-offs all showed a lower clinical cut-off for the Deaf population with respect to the PHQ-9 BSL and GAD-7 BSL with the exception of the Maximising criteria when used with the PHQ-9 BSL. Applying the new clinical cut-offs, the percentage of Deaf BSL IAPT service users showing reliable recovery is 54.0 % compared to 63.7 % using the cut-off scores used for English speaking hearing people. These compare favourably with national IAPT data for the general population. CONCLUSIONS: The correct clinical cut-offs for the PHQ-9 BSL and GAD-7 BSL enable meaningful measures of clinical effectiveness and facilitate appropriate access to treatment when required
