Casein kinase iδ mutations in familial migraine and advanced sleep phase.
Migraine is a common disabling disorder with a significant genetic component, characterized by severe headache and often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity. We identified two families, each with a distinct missense mutation in the gene encoding casein kinase Iδ (CKIδ), in which the mutation cosegregated with both the presence of migraine and advanced sleep phase. The resulting alterations (T44A and H46R) occurred in the conserved catalytic domain of CKIδ, where they caused reduced enzyme activity. Mice engineered to carry the CKIδ-T44A allele were more sensitive to pain after treatment with the migraine trigger nitroglycerin. CKIδ-T44A mice also exhibited a reduced threshold for cortical spreading depression (believed to be the physiological analog of migraine aura) and greater arterial dilation during cortical spreading depression. Astrocytes from CKIδ-T44A mice showed increased spontaneous and evoked calcium signaling. These genetic, cellular, physiological, and behavioral analyses suggest that decreases in CKIδ activity can contribute to the pathogenesis of migraine
Crustal structure below Popocat\'epetl Volcano (Mexico) from analysis of Rayleigh waves
An array of ten broadband stations was installed on the Popocat\'epetl
volcano (Mexico) for five months between October 2002 and February 2003. 26
regional and teleseismic earthquakes were selected and filtered in the
frequency time domain to extract the fundamental mode of the Rayleigh wave. The
average dispersion curve was obtained in two steps. Firstly, phase velocities
were measured in the period range [2-50] s from the phase difference between
pairs of stations, using Wiener filtering. Secondly, the average dispersion
curve was calculated by combining observations from all events in order to
reduce diffraction effects. The inversion of the mean phase velocity yielded a
crustal model for the volcano which is consistent with previous models of the
Mexican Volcanic Belt. The overall crustal structure beneath Popocat\'epetl is
therefore not different from the surrounding area, and the velocities in the
lower crust are confirmed to be relatively low. Lateral variations of the
structure were also investigated by dividing the network into four parts and by
applying the same procedure to each sub-array. No well-defined anomalies
appeared for the two sub-arrays for which it was possible to measure a
dispersion curve. However, dispersion curves associated with individual events
reveal important diffraction for 6 s to 12 s periods which could correspond to
strong lateral variations at 5 to 10 km depth
Single photon quantum non-demolition in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been often proposed for
generating nonlinear optical effects at the single photon level; in particular,
as a means to effect a quantum non-demolition measurement of a single photon
field. Previous treatments have usually considered homogeneously broadened
samples, but realisations in any medium will have to contend with inhomogeneous
broadening. Here we reappraise an earlier scheme [Munro \textit{et al.} Phys.
Rev. A \textbf{71}, 033819 (2005)] with respect to inhomogeneities and show an
alternative mode of operation that is preferred in an inhomogeneous
environment. We further show the implications of these results on a potential
implementation in diamond containing nitrogen-vacancy colour centres. Our
modelling shows that single mode waveguide structures of length in single-crystal diamond containing a dilute ensemble of NV
of only 200 centres are sufficient for quantum non-demolition measurements

Optimal use of time dependent probability density data to extract potential energy surfaces
A novel algorithm was recently presented to utilize emerging time dependent
probability density data to extract molecular potential energy surfaces. This
paper builds on the previous work and seeks to enhance the capabilities of the
extraction algorithm: An improved method of removing the generally ill-posed
nature of the inverse problem is introduced via an extended Tikhonov
regularization and methods for choosing the optimal regularization parameters
are discussed. Several ways to incorporate multiple data sets are investigated,
including the means to optimally combine data from many experiments exploring
different portions of the potential. Results are presented on the stability of
the inversion procedure, including the optimal combination scheme, under the
influence of data noise. The method is applied to the simulated inversion of a

CEOs from Orthopaedic Centers Worldwide Meet to Discuss Common Challenges: 2010 Annual Meeting of the International Society of Orthopaedic Centers
The International Society of Orthopaedic Centers was formed in 2006 as a think tank that would bring together thought leaders in orthopaedic surgery from major orthopaedic academic centers around the world. The Society’s mission is to share knowledge and strategies, improve patient care, and foster clinical, educational, and scientific collaboration. As the Society’s agendas developed, the members recognized that many of their aims intersected with those of hospital leadership. Thus, CEOs from member centers were invited to join their physician colleagues at the 2010 meeting in Bologna, Italy in order to explore solutions to administrative challenges related to patient care, volume growth, and costs.
