    Language and the Construction of Identity in the Scottish Separatist Movement: First Minister Alex Salmond's Preface to Scotland's Future (2013).

    Political discourse resorts to certain linguistic mechanisms to convey concrete meanings which translate into the adherence of the voting masses. This paper examines the linguistic techniques that were used in the Preface by Alex Salmond to Scotland's Future (2013) in the construction of identity in the separatist message and the portrayal of Scotland and the Scots. For this purpose, one of the main tools for my analysis is the systemic-functional analytic framework by Halliday, more specifically, the relevance of the ideational metafunction. This concept links to Van Dijk's critical approach to the discursive reproduction of dominance discourses. This methodological framework has contributed to the highlighting of certain language choices in the analysis of dominance in political discourse. In the selected source text, language erects as a source of enhancement of unity among the Scottish population or as a source of distancing to the UK institutions, which are linked to their oppression. All of these linguistic associations result in the creation of a new, separatist Scottish identity.<br /

    [EN] In the last few years, the web has become a privileged access platform for knowledge for an increasingly globalized society. Thus, digital platforms are currently used by researchers to strengthen the visibility of their research output as well as their own. In this study we explore the concept of e-visibility as a key notion in the current digital discursive practices within the scientific context. For such purposes we have focused on international research project websites as instances of such practices.The analysis undertaken is data-driven and has revealed the existence of various entities which are made visible by means of a combination of lexicogrammatical devices together with other modes afforded by the digital platforms. Results also show that there are various types of e-visibility emerging from the combination of the entities and the lexicogrammatical and visual resources used to make them visible.[ES] En los últimos años, la web se ha convertido en una excelente plataforma de acceso al conocimiento para nuestra sociedad, cada vez más globalizada. Por ello, los investigadores utilizan las plataformas digitales para fomentar tanto la visibilidad de sus resultados de investigación como la suya propia. En este artículo exploramos el concepto de visibilidad digital (e-visibilidad) como una noción clave en las prácticas discursivas digitales dentro del contexto científico. Para estudiar estas prácticas, hemos centrado nuestro análisis en sitios web de proyectos de investigación internacionales. El análisis realizado se basa en datos y revela la existencia de varias entidades que se hacen visibles mediante la combinación de estrategias lexicogramaticales con otros modos que sólo las plataformas digitales ponen al alcance.     The Use of the Strategies of Domestication and Foreignization in Two Spanish Translations of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest: a Contrastive Analysis.

    ABSTRACTThe aim of this final dissertation is to provide a contrastive analysis of two translations into Spanish (one by Ricardo Baeza published in 1927, and the other by Mauro Armiño published in 2008) of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). The focus of the analysis is placed in the use of the strategies of domestication and foreignization first introduced in the field by Lawrence Venuti (1995). The paper seeks to ascertain the extent to which the role of culture and globalization influences the choice of strategies in translation. In this way, it intends to determine if there is a tendency for the use of domestication or foreignization and, if that is the case, whether it has been influenced by passing of time. The analysis has been carried out through the comparison of the translation of the first and third acts of the play, focusing mainly on the terms presenting cultural connotations. The findings show that the difference between the disconnection between cultures existing in the 1920s in contrast with their proximity nowadays, has a repercussion on the way culture is viewed and treated in translation. As a result, there is a change from the tendency to use domestication in the target text published in 1927 to the preference for foreignization shown in that of 2008. RESUMENEste Trabajo de Fin de Grado consiste en el análisis contrastivo de dos traducciones al español (la de Ricardo Baeza publicada en 1927 y la de Mauro Armiño publicada en 2008) de la obra The Importance of Being Earnest de Oscar Wilde (1895). El análisis se centra en el uso de las estrategias de domesticación y extranjerización que fueron introducidas por primera vez al campo de la traducción por Lawrence Venuti (1995). El objetivo del trabajo es determinar la influencia que la cultura y la globalización tienen sobre la elección de las estrategias de traducción, es decir, comprobar si hay una clara tendencia en el uso de la domesticación o la extranjerización, y en caso de haberlo, si esta cambia con el paso del tiempo. El método utilizado ha sido la comparación de las traducciones de los actos uno y tres ofrecidas por cada texto meta, con especial hincapié en los términos que presentan connotaciones culturales. Los resultados revelan que la diferencia entre el desconocimiento de otras culturas propio de la primera mitad del siglo XX y la proximidad que ahora hay entre ellas se refleja en la manera de traducir estos términos. Por consiguiente, se puede apreciar una tendencia hacia el uso de la estrategia de domesticación en el texto meta de 1927 que contrasta con una inclinación por la aplicación de la extranjerización en el de 2008.<br /

    RESUMENEste Trabajo de Fin de Grado consiste en una propuesta de traducción de un fragmento de “Dishonesty is the Second-Best Policy: And Other Rules to Live By”, de David Mitchell, y en un análisis del proceso de traducción. En este libro, Mitchell satiriza algunos de los temas más controvertidos de la actualidad británica. El fragmento elegido para la traducción habla sobre el Brexit y cómo algunas figuras políticas afrontaron este acontecimiento. El humor con el que autor trata estos temas, unido a la gran cantidad de referencias culturales, planteó una gran variedad de problemas de traducción que tenían que ser resueltos para lograr una traducción accesible para el público español. En mi análisis, se analizan los problemas más significativos que surgieron durante el proceso de traducción y se explica cómo estos problemas se solucionaron mediante el uso de diferentes técnicas de traducción. Por último, llego a una serie de conclusiones, identificando algunas de las tendencias generales observadas durante el proceso de traducción, que podrían compararse con las tendencias que la traducción del humor suele arrojar. ABSTRACTThis dissertation consists in a translation proposal of an extract from “Dishonesty is the Second-Best Policy: And Other Rules to Live By”, by David Mitchell, and an analysis of the translation process. In the book, Mitchell comments on some of the most controversial topics in the UK during the past few years in a very satirical way. The extract I chose to translate deals with Brexit and how some political figures acted in relation to this phenomenon. The humour with which the author talks about these topics, together with the considerable number of cultural references, posed a wide variety of translation problems that needed to be solved in order to achieve a translation that was accessible to the Spanish readership. My analysis includes an account of the most significant problems that arose during the translation as well as an explanation of how these issues were addressed through several translation strategies. In the end, I reached some conclusions regarding general tendencies in the usage of strategies during the translation process that might be identified with the tendencies that the translation of humour generally shows.<br /

    The Academia and I: A cross-cultural and a cross-disciplinary analysis of the use of authorial voice(s) in research articles

    Adopting a corpus-based study methodology, a thorough analysis of authorial academic voices in research articles is attempted, by means of a cross-cultural (English by native writers and English by non-native ─Spanish─ scholars) and cross-disciplinary (hard vs soft sciences) perspective. The focus of the present dissertation has been the use authors make of two metadiscoursal elements, self-mentions and evidentials, which serve the purpose of bringing the author’s voice onto the text as well as the voice of the author’s colleagues.The conclusions drawn cast light on the way the realizations of these voices may be influenced by the discipline and/or by the linguistic background of the authors, and they may also show aspects of the contribution that Spanish writers are making to English as a Lingua Franca. Siguiendoun tipo de metodología aplicada al estudio de corpus, se pretende llevar a cabo un análisis de las voces relativas al autor y a la academia mediante un enfoque intercultural (investigadores no nativos –españoles- escribiendo en inglés) e interdisciplinar (ciencias duras frente a ciencias blandas). En esta tésis, se ha prestado especial atenciónal uso que los autores hacen de dos elementos metadiscursivos, selfmentions(menciones propias) yevidentials (citas), que tienen como propósito representar en el texto tanto la voz del autorcomo la de sus colegas. Las conclusions alcanzadas aportan luz sobre la influencia que pueden tener la disciplina o el trasfondo lingüístico del autor en la representación de dichas voces en el texto,mostrando además, aspectos acerca de la contribución que los escritores españoles hacen al inglés como Lingua Franc

    Los planteamientos lingüísticos feministas (Spender, 1980) destacan la importancia de la revisión del lenguaje como parte de la lucha por la igualdad de las mujeres. Adoptando las ideas del Relativismo Lingüístico y tomando el Análisis Crítico del Discurso (Fairclough, 1989, 1995) como marco teórico, este trabajo tratará de mostrar las maneras en las que dos periódicos británicos de ideologías opuestas, The Guardian y The Daily Mail, retratan la violencia sexual ejercida por hombres blancos de indiscutible poder como Donald Trump y Harvey Weinstein. Se llevará a cabo un análisis cualitativo centrado especialmente en los aspectos evaluativos (Hunston y Thompson, 2011), entre otros. Al comparar los distintos enfoques que se dan a los mismos hechos, se mostrará cómo el relato resultante retrata a los agresores, a las denunciantes y a los hechos en sí de diferente manera, contribuyendo así al refuerzo ideológico del lector meta. <br /

    Este Trabajo Fin de Grado consiste en la traducción comentada de un fragmento del libro Pride (Tim Tate, 2017. Inglaterra: John Blake Publishing Ltd.). El análisis traductológico se centra en dos tipos de problemas de traducción, lingüísticos y culturales, e incluye el razonamiento para cada una de las estrategias aplicadas y la propuesta de traducción derivada de estas. Para llegar a conclusiones más precisas he realizado, además, un análisis de los factores intra y extratextuales que afectan y dan forma al texto. Al aunar distintos géneros textuales y tratar con un contexto alejado en tiempo y espacio de la situación en que se encuentra el público meta, este libro implica una gran variedad de problemas, que requiere la utilización de una amplia variedad de estrategias. Tras el análisis he llegado a la conclusión de que, pese a ser variadas, hay dos estrategias a las que he recurrido un número de veces significativamente superior: explicitación y equivalencia.<br /
