Comparative studies between different strata of forests in ecological succession are important to understand the forest dynamics. The study evaluated floristic, phytosociological and ecological aspects between the tree and regenerating strata of an urban fragment of semideciduous forest, in Jataí, Goiás state. In the last decades, the vegetation that was typically savanna has become a forest. Trees (diameter at breast height, DBH ≥ 5 cm) were sampled in 12 permanent 200m² plots. In each of them, 25m² sub-plots were sampled for the regenerant stratum, which comprised individuals with DBH <5cm and height ≥ 1m. Regenerants had greater richness (31 species), with two more species than adults. There was low floristic and structural similarity between the strata, indicating a replacement of species over time. Shannon's diversity was significantly lower for the tree stratum (t test), since it presented low equability, with ecological dominance of few species. Both strata had a high proportion of pioneer species, when compared to other studies. Zoochory and species of forest environments were significantly more abundant in the regenerating stratum. The study revealed a fragment in a frank process of secondary succession and vulnerability in the face of anthropic pressures, with care regarding its conservation being important.

of soil organic matter under two periodically flooded forest formations
on the island of Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro. These formations differ on
the degree of soil water saturation, caused by the influence of water
table, and in the (F1) formation presents the water table nearer the
surface compared to the (F2) formation. Samples were collected in
layers from 0.00 to 0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m. The soil
properties evaluated were: pH, H+ + Al+3, Ca+2, Mg+2,Na+, K+, P, N,
total organic carbon (TOC) and base saturation (V%), humin carbon
fraction (C-HUM), carbon of humic acid fraction (HAF-C) and fulvic acid
fraction carbon (FAF-C). Statistically higher pH values were observed
for F1. In F2 there are higher values of Mg+2, P, N and V% value.
Correlation was found between the concentrations of Mg+2, N, humic acid
and fulvic acid with water table in F1, and water table in F2 with Na+
and K+. Fraction C-HUM was more representative of the total organic
carbon, followed by C-HAF and C-FAF. The TOC levels were higher in F1.
The C / N ratio was lower in F2, with values ranging between 9 and 12,
and F1 were found higher values of this relationship, ranging from 9 to
15. Among the pathways of formation of organic soils in both areas it
appears that the major route for organic matter accumulation is the
inheritance route
In an andisol tt was placed for three years land uses systems like: farmer traditional (slash and burn, fertilization and sowing of bean and maiz); Quesungual Agroforestry System-SAQ (no burn, natural regeneration of native trees, bean and maiz sowing); crop residues as management cover, and a fi ve years secundary forest (tacotal) as a control. It was considered soil samples at 0-5, 5-10 y 10-20 for physical and fertility characterization and fi eld measurement of soil erosion by rain simulation. Quesungal and crop residues systems, remained soil erosión susceptibility at levels as low as the natural secondary forest

Latossolo Vermelho. Em cada uma das \ue1reas avaliadas foram
coletadas amostras nas camadas de 0-0,05; 0,05-0,1; 0,1-0,2 e 0,2-0,4
m. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado. As \ue1reas

org\ue2nico e subst\ue2ncias h\ufamicas, desencadeando menores
valores de densidade do solo, maior volume total de poros e maior
disponibilidade de P em rela\ue7\ue3o \ue0s demais
fitofisionomias estudadas. No entanto, as \ue1reas de cerrad\ue3o e
cerrad\ue3o e mata mesof\uedtica. Entretanto, o maior teor e
sensu stricto.Cerrado biome is the second largest Brazilian biome, where different
phyto-physiognomical features are observed, which may be influenced by
soil factors. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate soil physical and
fertility properties (particle size analysis, bulk density - BD and
total pore volume - TPV), carbon and nitrogen stocks and chemical
fractions of soil organic matter (SOM ) in areas of mesophytic forest,
Cerrado and Cerrado sensu stricto in the ecological station of
Pirapitinga, Minas Gerais state. The soil was classified as Oxisol and
soil samples were collected from the layers 0-0.05, 0.05-0.1, 0.1-0.2,
and 0.2-0.4 m. The experimental design was completely randomized. Areas
of mesophytic forest and cerrado grow in soil with higher clay compared
to the Cerrado sensu stricto, indicating that possibly more clayey
soils have higher water holding capacity and nutrient supply to attend
the demand more appropriately with larger vegetations. The mesophytic
forest area by presenting high waste disposal of plant and be in the
clayey soil is in some layers providing higher levels of soil organic C
and humic substances, triggering lower values of bulk density, greater
total porosity and availability of P in relation to other vegetation
types studied. However, the closed areas and Cerrado sensu stricto have
higher amounts of Mg, K, and lower pH, H + Al and Al compared to
mesophitic forest area, which may suggest that these phytophysiognomies
settle preferentially in the most fertile soils of Cerrado biome. The
relationship between the humic acid and fulvic acid fraction indicates
that the forest vegetation Mesophytic presents for vegetation of
Cerrado and Cerrado sensu stricto soil organic matter of great quality,
which allows the establishment of physical and chemical attributes
favorable to the development of the plant. The largest stocks of carbon
are verified in larger vegetation, cerrado and mesophytic forest.
However, the higher grade and stock soil nitrogen occur in Cerrado
sensu stricto
Functioning of forest ecosystems is greatly affected by composition as well as functional traits of plant species. However, the relationship between vegetation traits with nutrient cycling related processes in ecological restoration is so far under explored in the literature. We investigated the effects of tree species traits on different aspects of nutrient cycling (litter and nutrients production, litter-associated fauna and soil organic matter - SOM) in different ecological restoration systems. We analyzed a long-term experiment implemented in 1997, at the Campus of UNESP/FCA in Botucatu, at two sites with different soil characteristics. Site 1 has a clayey and higher fertility soil (a fertile loamy Ultisol) and Site 2 has a sandy texture and lower fertility soil (Alfisol). The experiment was designed in randomized blocks with five treatments (restoration systems) and three replications in 50 x 50 m plots (2500 m²). Four different restoration systems were implanted at each site. Restoration systems are differentiated by the number and composition of species used: direct seeding (SEM), agroforestry (AGR), commercial timber and firewood and (CML) and diversified (DIV). A control system (CON), with no planting and natural succession processes are following its own way (passive restoration) was also analyzed. Furthermore, we studied a fragment of seasonal semideciduous forest next to each site as a reference (REF). We assessed the number of species (rarefied richness), density, basal area and percentage of nitrogen fixing species and percentage of individuals of deciduous species in all restoration systems and forest reference. Litter and nutrient yield were higher both in the commercial (CML) and diversified (DIV) systems, regardless of site condition, which was due, respectively, to the largest proportion of individuals of putative nitrogen fixing species and higher species richness in those systems. The commercial and diversified systems were also the ones who most differed from the control and were the most similar to the reference. Restoration systems did not influence the soil fauna community structure, neither differed from the control and reference forest, while site conditions and seasonality were the main factors explaining differences, a reflection mainly of soil moisture and levels of P and Ca from litter stock. Although our results indicate that species richness and percentage of nitrogen-fixing species had a major influence on SOM dynamics, this was only observed at Site 1, due to the greater clay content. In Site 2, the high sand proportion resulted in low SOM levels. In Site 1, athought we have not found differences amidst restoration systems, our results indicated that the commercial mixed planting (CML) and diversified (DIV) systems were the most similar ones to the reference forest, especially the COM, regarding total nitrogen, total organic carbon, natural 15N abundance and carbon associated with minerals (COam). By means of an integrative analysis of all processes studied here, our results suggest that the choice of species with particular traits (for example, putative nitrogen biological fixation) are as effective at restoring processes nutrient cycling, as systems with high species richness.

Os melhores índices de diversidade e uniformidade foram verificados na estação inverno em ambas as áreas.<br>The vegetal fragments size, structure and diversity have direct influence on the litter decomposition rate of decomposition, by inducing a soil biota specific community. This study was carried out to characterize the soil fauna in forest Atlantic areas with different successional stages in two different seasons (summer and winter) in Santa Maria de Jetibá, ES, Brazil. Were used two areas with different vegetation types in relation to successional stage, defi ned as: Secondary Forest "Old" (SFO) and Secondary Forest (FS). To edaphic fauna collect, were used "pit fall" traps where in each area was defi ned a plot of about 1 ha, and these were distributed randomly 10 traps. Were collected 5.009 individuals, separated into 29 taxonomic groups. The taxonomic group Díptera and functional group Holometábolos were the most representative for the SFO in the winter and summer, and FS in the winter, this behavior differs in FS in the summer there was a predominance of the Social and Formicidae groups. In the SF area was observed a greater number of individuals, total wealth and average wealth compared with the SFO. The best diversity and uniformity indexes were observed in the winter season in both areas
