Influence of Lorentz-violating terms on a two-level system
The influence of Lorentz- and CPT-violating terms of the extended Standard
Model on a semi-classical two-level system is analyzed. It is shown that the
Lorentz-violating background (when coupled with the fermion sector in a vector
way) is able to induce modifications on the Rabi oscillation pattern, promoting
sensitive modulations on the usual oscillations. As for the term involving the
coefficient coupled in an axial vector way, it brings about oscillations both
on energy states and on the spin states (implied by the background). It is also
seen that such backgrounds are able to yield state oscillations even in the
absence of the electromagnetic field. The foreseen effects are used to
establish upper bounds on the Lorentz-violating coefficients.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, revtex style
DEA investment strategy in the Brazilian stock market
This paper presents a multi-period investment strategy using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in the Brazilian stock market. Results show that the returns based on the DEA strategy were superior to the returns of a Brazilian stock index in most of the 22 quarters analyzed, presenting a significant Jensen's alpha.
Bounds on the electromagnetic interactions of excited spin-3/2 leptons
We discuss possible deviations from QED produced by a virtual excited
spin-3/2 lepton in the reaction . Data recorded
by the OPAL Collaboration at a c.m. energy are used to
establish bounds on the nonstandard-lepton mass and coupling strengths.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 7 ps figures. To be published in Phys. Rev.
A Correlational Analysis of Length and Nature of Relationships Between Applicant and Reference and Strength of Recommendation for CASPA Letters of Recommendation
Background: The Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) application includes a standardized rating form in addition to the ability to submit letters of recommendation. This exploratory study examines the standardized portion of the CASPA letter of recommendation to determine whether there is a correlation between the ratings given and the relationship and length of time the writer knew the applicant. Method: Four-hundred and thirty recommendation forms were evaluated. Variables included length and nature of the relationship between the letter writer and the overall recommendation given by the writer for the applicant. Results: Almost 95% of writers highly recommended the applicant. There was a weak correlation between length of relationship and overall evaluation rating and recommendation to the program r = 0.12 and r = 0.17, respectively. A moderate correlation was found between the nature of the relationship (r = 0.34) and overall evaluation (r = 0.30). Conclusion: This study might indicate that the nature of the relationship between the writer and applicant and may provide programs with a metric to evaluate the strength of letters of recommendation
GeMs/GSAOI observations of La Serena 94: an old and far open cluster inside the solar circle
Physical properties were derived for the candidate open cluster La Serena 94,
recently unveiled by the VVV collaboration. Thanks to the exquisite angular
resolution provided by GeMS/GSAOI, we could characterize this system in detail,
for the first time, with deep photometry in JHK - bands. Decontaminated
JHK diagrams reach about 5 mag below the cluster turnoff in H. The locus
of red clump giants in the colour - colour diagram, together with an extinction
law, was used to obtain an average extinction of . The
same stars were considered as standard - candles to derive the cluster
distance, kpc. Isochrones were matched to the cluster colour -
magnitude diagrams to determine its age, , and
metallicity, . A core radius of pc was
found by fitting King models to the radial density profile. By adding up the
visible stellar mass to an extrapolated mass function, the cluster mass was
estimated as M, consistent with an
integrated magnitude of and a tidal radius of
pc. The overall characteristics of La Serena 94 confirm that
it is an old open cluster located in the Crux spiral arm towards the fourth
Galactic quadrant and distant kpc from the Galactic centre. The
cluster distorted structure, mass segregation and age indicate that it is a
dynamically evolved stellar system.Comment: 16 pages, 24 figures, 2 Tables, accepted by MNRAS; corrected typo
