Mating system analysis and genetic diversity of Parkia multijuga Benth. one native tree Species of the Amazon.
The Amazonian native tree species Parkia multijuga has potential silvicultural characteristics that can be utilized to productive plantations. Understanding its mating system is necessary to delineate the methods for the breeding of the species, the collection of seeds for conservation, and the use of seedlings for production plantations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the mating system and population genetic diversity of P. multijuga, using molecular markers
Development of therapeutic and cosmetic formulations based on sardine-based products
Sardine is one of the most common fish of the Portuguese coast and has important
nutritional features. Sardine oil is also a source of nutrients with proven benefits for human health, being rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) [1]. Several studies show that there is a direct link between a diet enriched in omega-3 and the prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or asthma, mental disorders and prevention of various types of cancer [2].
The aim of this work was to characterize in a systematic way the potential protective role of sardine oil and derived PUFAs. To evaluate the antioxidant and antiinflammatory effect of sardine oil and PUFAs, human fibroblasts (BJ-5ta), human melanocytes (A375) and human keratinocytes (NCTC2544) were used. Cell viability was affected for concentrations higher than 8mg/ml for sardine oil and higher than 0.1mg/ml for PUFAs. However and regarding PUFAs, melanocytes revealed a higher susceptibility. With the lowest tested concentrations, sardine-based compounds promoted cell proliferation and protected cells from induced oxidative stress, with higher protection conferred by PUFAs. These results open the opportunity to develop new therapeutic and cosmetic applications based on sardine-derived compounds.
Their incorporation in topical creams may contribute to a better treatment of
inflammation and in the prevention of skin aging
Validity of numerical trajectories in the synchronization transition of complex systems
We investigate the relationship between the loss of synchronization and the
onset of shadowing breakdown {\it via} unstable dimension variability in
complex systems. In the neighborhood of the critical transition to strongly
non-hyperbolic behavior, the system undergoes on-off intermittency with respect
to the synchronization state. There are potentially severe consequences of
these facts on the validity of the computer-generated trajectories obtained
from dynamical systems whose synchronization manifolds share the same
non-hyperbolic properties.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients Receiving Dialysis in Portugal: a Nationwide Multicentre Survey
Background: Data on human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) infected patients receiving
dialysis in Portugal is scarce.
Methods: This nationwide epidemiological
survey retrospectively evaluates HIV-infected
patients on chronic dialysis in Portugal between 1997 and 2002.
Results: Sixty-six patients were evaluated (mean age: 39.1±1.6 years, 47 men, 35 black
African). Sixty-two patients started dialysis and 4 patients who were receiving dialysis had HIV seroconversion. Eighty-five percent of patients were treated in Lisbon. The annual incidence of HIV-infected patients on chronic dialysis was 0.5% in 1997 and 0.9% in 2002. Seventy-eight
percent of patients were HIV-1 infected , 13%
had hepatitis B and 31% hepatitis C. Sexual
contact was the mode of transmission of HIV in 53% of cases. Four patients had biopsy-proved HIV-associated nephropathy. Ninety-five percent of patients were on chronic hemodialysis. Fifty percent of patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. At follow-up, 12 patients died.
HIV-infected CKD patient survival after starting dialysis was 80% at 3 years.
Conclusion: The incidence of HIV-infected
patients on chronic dialysis in Portugal has almost doubled. Widespread use of highly active antiretroviral therapy and the increasing number of black Africans from former overseas Portuguese colonies now living in Portugal are possible reasons for this large increase
Estimating stellar population and emission line properties in S-PLUS galaxies
We present tests of a new method to simultaneously estimate stellar
population and emission line (EL) properties of galaxies out of S-PLUS
photometry. The technique uses the AlStar code, updated with an empirical prior
which greatly improves its ability to estimate ELs using only the survey's 12
bands. The tests compare the output of (noise-perturbed) synthetic photometry
of SDSS galaxies to properties derived from previous full spectral fitting and
detailed EL analysis. For realistic signal-to-noise ratios, stellar population
properties are recovered to better than 0.2 dex in masses, mean ages,
metallicities and mag for the extinction. More importantly, ELs are
recovered remarkably well for a photometric survey. We obtain input output
dispersions of 0.05--0.2 dex for the equivalent widths of
, , H, H,
, and , and even better for lines
stronger than . These excellent results are achieved by
combining two empirical facts into a prior which restricts the EL space
available for the fits: (1) Because, for the redshifts explored here, H
and fall in a single narrow band (J0660), their
combined equivalent width is always well recovered, even when
/H is not. (2) We know from SDSS that
correlates with
/H, which can be used to tell if a galaxy
belongs to the left or right wings in the classical BPT diagnostic diagram.
Example applications to integrated light and spatially resolved data are also
presented, including a comparison with independent results obtained with
MUSE-based integral field spectroscopy.Comment: MNRAS accepte
