Ground state of two electrons on concentric spheres
We extend our analysis of two electrons on a sphere [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 79},
062517 (2009); Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 123008 (2009)] to electrons on
concentric spheres with different radii. The strengths and weaknesses of
several electronic structure models are analyzed, ranging from the mean-field
approximation (restricted and unrestricted Hartree-Fock solutions) to
configuration interaction expansion, leading to near-exact wave functions and
energies. The M{\o}ller-Plesset energy corrections (up to third-order) and the
asymptotic expansion for the large-spheres regime are also considered. We also
study the position intracules derived from approximate and exact wave
functions. We find evidence for the existence of a long-range Coulomb hole in
the large-spheres regime, and infer that unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory
over-localizes the electrons.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Infiltration/cure modeling of resin transfer molded composite materials using advanced fiber architectures
A model was developed which can be used to simulate infiltration and cure of textile composites by resin transfer molding. Fabric preforms were resin infiltrated and cured using model generated optimized one-step infiltration/cure protocols. Frequency dependent electromagnetic sensing (FDEMS) was used to monitor in situ resin infiltration and cure during processing. FDEMS measurements of infiltration time, resin viscosity, and resin degree of cure agreed well with values predicted by the simulation model. Textile composites fabricated using a one-step infiltration/cure procedure were uniformly resin impregnated and void free. Fiber volume fraction measurements by the resin digestion method compared well with values predicted using the model
Classification of Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence Images Using Convolutional Neural Network
Images are an important data source for diagnosis and treatment of oral
diseases. The manual classification of images may lead to misdiagnosis or
mistreatment due to subjective errors. In this paper an image classification
model based on Convolutional Neural Network is applied to Quantitative
Light-induced Fluorescence images. The deep neural network outperforms other
state of the art shallow classification models in predicting labels derived
from three different dental plaque assessment scores. The model directly
benefits from multi-channel representation of the images resulting in improved
performance when, besides the Red colour channel, additional Green and Blue
colour channels are used.Comment: Full version of ICANN 2017 submissio
Epoxy/Glass and Polyimide (LaRC(TradeMark) PETI-8)/Carbon Fiber Metal Laminates Made by the VARTM Process
Recent work at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) has concentrated on developing new polyimide resin systems for advanced aerospace applications that can be processed without the use of an autoclave. Polyimide composites are very attractive for applications that require a high strength to weight ratio and thermal stability. Vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) has shown the potential to reduce the manufacturing cost of composite structures. Fiber metal laminates (FML) made via this process with aluminum, glass fabric, and epoxy resins have been previously fabricated at LaRC. In this work, the VARTM process has been refined for epoxy/glass FMLs and extended to the fabrication of FM Ls with titanium/carbon fabric layers and a polyimide system developed at NASA, LARC(TradeMark) PETI-8. Resin flow pathways were introduced into the titanium foils to aid the infiltration of the polyimide resin. Injection temperatures in the range of 250-280 C were required to achieve the necessary VARTM viscosities (<10 Poise). Laminate quality and initial mechanical properties will be presented
Uniform electron gases
We show that the traditional concept of the uniform electron gas (UEG) --- a
homogeneous system of finite density, consisting of an infinite number of
electrons in an infinite volume --- is inadequate to model the UEGs that arise
in finite systems. We argue that, in general, a UEG is characterized by at
least two parameters, \textit{viz.} the usual one-electron density parameter
and a new two-electron parameter . We outline a systematic
strategy to determine a new density functional across the
spectrum of possible and values.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 5 table
Small Universal Accepting Networks of Evolutionary Processors with Filtered Connections
In this paper, we present some results regarding the size complexity of
Accepting Networks of Evolutionary Processors with Filtered Connections
(ANEPFCs). We show that there are universal ANEPFCs of size 10, by devising a
method for simulating 2-Tag Systems. This result significantly improves the
known upper bound for the size of universal ANEPFCs which is 18.
We also propose a new, computationally and descriptionally efficient
simulation of nondeterministic Turing machines by ANEPFCs. More precisely, we
describe (informally, due to space limitations) how ANEPFCs with 16 nodes can
simulate in O(f(n)) time any nondeterministic Turing machine of time complexity
f(n). Thus the known upper bound for the number of nodes in a network
simulating an arbitrary Turing machine is decreased from 26 to 16
An ultrashort pulse ultra-violet radiation undulator source driven by a laser plasma wakefield accelerator
Narrow band undulator radiation tuneable over the wavelength range of 150–260 nm has been produced by short electron bunches from a 2 mm long laser plasma wakefield accelerator based on a 20 TW femtosecond laser system. The number of photons measured is up to 9 × 106 per shot for a 100 period undulator, with a mean peak brilliance of 1 × 1018 photons/s/mrad2/mm2/0.1% bandwidth. Simulations estimate that the driving electron bunch r.m.s. duration is as short as 3 fs when the electron beam has energy of 120–130 MeV with the radiation pulse duration in the range of 50–100 fs
The problem of continental shelf break position as an important structural – facial
marine basin boundary discussed on the basis of manned submersibles’ data. The range and
setting of Northern Black Sea facial zones in the depths interval 70 220m are described. It’s
found that the facial changes are related closely with hypoxia increasing to complete anoxia
from the shelf break to the depth of about 200 m
