The Child\u27s Bible
Every lover of scripture takes a Bible for himself within our larger one. He may read the 60 books from a sense of duty or profit, but there are portions that he loves, which he reads time and again. Those are the Bible within the Bible that he has made for himself. Any Bible used long and effectively by one person has this story to tell. Torn edges, pencillngs, thumbmarks plentiful here, and large sections of clean pages there show what the owner may never have dreamed, that he has his personal edition of our common Bible. This is inevitable. And it is our highest tribute to the book of books
Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra at Reduced Temperatures. I. Principles and Methods
Low temperature absorption and fluorescence spectra of solids, liquids,
and solutions often reveal increased spectral detail of use in analytical
procedures and molecular structure studies. Nevertheless, while qualitative
observations of the influence of liquid air temperatures upon optical
properties were undertaken very early, investigations of the
absorption and fluorescence of organic compounds at the temperature
of liquid nitrogen (-195.6°; 77.4 °K.) and below have appeared only
sporadically. Because of the potential usefulness of the technique we have undertaken a systematic study of the low temperature spectra
of substances of biochemical interest. The present paper discusses the
methods employed; subsequent papers will deal with the experimental
results. In this work, we have emphasized the wave-length location of
absorption bands and the accurate determination of relative optical densities
rather than precision in the determination of absolute optical densities,
thus permitting the use of simpler methods than would otherwise be
necessary
Coccidioidomycosis among Workers at an Archeological Site, Northeastern Utah
In 2001, an outbreak of acute respiratory disease occurred among persons working at a Native American archeological site at Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah. Epidemiologic and environmental investigations were undertaken to determine the cause of the outbreak. A clinical case was defined by the presence of at least two of the following symptoms: self-reported fever, shortness of breath, or cough. Ten workers met the clinical case definition; 9 had serologic confirmation of coccidioidomycosis, and 8 were hospitalized. All 10 were present during sifting of dirt through screens on June 19; symptoms began 9–12 days later (median 10). Coccidioidomycosis also developed in a worker at the site in September 2001. A serosurvey among 40 other Dinosaur National Monument workers did not find serologic evidence of recent infection. This outbreak documents a new endemic focus of coccidioidomycosis, extending northward its known geographic distribution in Utah by approximately 200 miles
