HE4 in the differential diagnosis of ovarian masses

Ovarian masses, a common finding among pre- and post-menopausal women, can be benign or malignant. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancy among women living in industrialized countries. According to the current guidelines, measurement of CA125 tumor marker remains the gold standard in the management of ovarian cancer. Recently, HE4 has been proposed as emerging biomarker in the differential diagnosis of adnexal masses and in the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Discrimination of benign and malignant ovarian tumors is very important for correct patient referral to institutions specializing in care and management of ovarian cancer. Tumor markers CA125 and HE4 are currently incorporated into the Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm” (ROMA) with menopausal status for discerning malignant from benign pelvic masses. The availability of a good biomarker such as HE4, closely associated with the differential and early diagnosis of ovarian cancer, could reduce medical costs related to more expensive diagnostic procedures. Finally, it is important to note that HE4 identifies platinum non-responders thus enabling a switch to second line chemotherapy and improved survival

PLASTIC DESIGN OF CB-FRAMES WITH REDUCED SECTION SOLUTION FOR BRACING MEMBERS

The seismic behaviour of concentrically braced frames (CBFs) designed according to the current European provisions is unsatisfactory due to the premature out-of-plane buckling of columns. For this reason, a new design methodology, based on a rigorous application of ``capacity design'' criteria has been recently proposed. In addition, aiming at a reduction of the plastic out of plane deformations of gusset plates due to brace buckling and at the prevention of sudden impact load affecting connections at the end of the straightening phase, Eurocode 8 requires the limitation of the brace slenderness. This limitation leads to the oversizing of diagonals and, consequently, of beams and columns. Therefore, to avoid this problem a new design strategy for bracing members is suggested: the Reduced Section Solution (RSS). It allows the calibration of the diagonal yielding resistance, leaving the brace slenderness practically unchanged. The results of dynamic inelastic analyses carried out with reference to braced frames designed according to the proposed procedure, both with and without RSS, are compared with those obtained with reference to the same structural schemes designed according to Eurocode 8. The obtained results show that the proposed design approaches are able to assure a significant improvement of the seismic performance

La vie en classe, à Beauvais (France) et à Naples (Italie)

L’anthropologie visuelle permet, grâce aux prises de vues effectuées dans des classes comparables de fin d’école primaire en France et en Italie, de mettre en évidence des différences notables dans plusieurs domaines relatifs à l’enseignement : l’aspect des écoles, l’aménagement des classes, les gestes et les comportements de chacun, les échanges entres maîtres et élèves, la place plus ou moins réduite des sentiments personnels, le traitement des erreurs. Partant de l’idée que l’enfant arrive à l’école en sortant d’un milieu familial dans lequel il a bâti une certaine image de lui-même, et qu’il va se confronter à une institution scolaire, cette étude cherche à comparer les spécificités culturelles française et italienne qui induisent les différences observées. L’image apporte sa force d’évocation, sans médiation ; l’analyse, elle, renvoie à des connaissances historiques et culturelles sur la France et l’Italie, et permet de réaffirmer que la pédagogie est, à l’évidence, culturellement connotée.Visual anthropology, through filming in comparable classes at the end of primary school in France and in Italy, highlights significant differences relating to various aspects of schooling and teaching, e.g. the way schools look, how classrooms are organised, exchanges between teachers and students, their gestures and behaviour, the degree of recognition of personal feelings, dealing with mistakes. Based on the premise that children arrive at school from a family environment within which they have built a certain self-image, this study compares the French and Italian cultural specificities underlying the observed differences. This article combines the unmediated evocative power of the image with an analysis that points to French and Italian history and culture and reaffirms that pedagogy is clearly embedded in a cultural context.La antropología visual permite revelar, gracias a diversas tomas efectuadas en clases comparables al final del ciclo primario en Francia y en Italia, diferencias notables en varios ámbitos de la enseñanza: el aspecto de las escuelas, el acondicionamiento de las aulas, los gestos y comportamientos de cada uno, los intercambios entre docentes y alumnos, el lugar más o menos reducido de los sentimientos personales y el tratamiento de los errores. Partiendo de la idea de que el niño elaboró una cierta imagen de sí mismo en su núcleo familiar y al llegar a la escuela va a enfrentarse a una institución escolar, este estudio intenta comparar las especificidades culturales francesas e italianas que generan las diferencias observadas. Novi podaci o maču srebrnjaku Trachipterus trachypterus Gmelin, 1789. i srporibi srebrnici Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1820) (Pisces: Trachipteridae) iz Sredozemnog mora

In this paper we report data on four juvenile individuals of T. trachypterus and one adult of Z. cristatus, from the Strait of Messina and southern Tyrrhenian Sea, respectively (Mediterranean Sea). Information on morphometric and meristic characters are provided together with some biological data such as prey and age estimation. Only stomachs of T. trachypterus contained prey: copepods, amphypods and pelagic snails. The analysis of growth patterns in vertebrae of Z. cristatus allowed to estimate an age of 4 years for this individual. We also combined our data together with information from bibliographic sources and estimated the relationships between total length and standard length, as well as total length and body mass, for these two species.U ovom radu objavljujemo podatke o četiri juvenilne jedinke T. trachypterus i jednoj zreloj jedin- ki. Z. cristatus, iz Mesinskog tjesnaca, odnosno južnog Tirenskog mora (Sredozemno more). Podaci o morfometrijskim i merističkim značajkama daju se zajedno s nekim biološkim podacima kao što su plijen i procjena starosti.
