    Model-independent resonance parameter extraction using the trace of K and T matrices

    A model-independent method for the determination of Breit-Wigner resonance parameters is presented. The method is based on eliminating the dependence on the choice of channel basis by analyzing the trace of the K and T matrices in the coupled-channel formalism, rather than individual matrix elements of the multichannel scattering matrix.Comment: 6 pages, 16 figure

    A case study analyzed how supervisors at one university selected competencies, or trait-based skills, for non-faculty employees. This case study provides a valuable contribution by focusing on employees at one institution type–a large, public research university. While it has been documented that non-faculty employees provide important contributions to higher education, there is more to be discovered about this population of university employee, noted as more than 2 million U.S. employees in 2011. The research question guiding this study was: Within a university setting, how are employee competencies valued by job title within colleges and divisions? Multiple correspondence analysis evaluated supervisor competency selection for 1,836 non-supervisory and 565 supervisory employees using data from this university’s 2012 performance appraisal. For non-supervisory employees, the first dimension accounted for 65.11% of adjusted inertia, or explained variance. The second dimension accounted for 23.89% of adjusted inertia. For supervisory employees, the first dimension accounted for 86.57% of adjusted inertia. The second dimension accounted for 8.26% of adjusted inertia. The key study finding was that, despite the availability of other higher-education specific competency alternatives and best practices for competency use in the appraisal, this institution’s implementation of competencies was found to be mechanical. This study proposed best practices for this and similarly situated institutions as to how competencies can be used to develop employees and improve their performance.Un estudio de caso analizado cómo supervisores en una Universidad seleccionan las competencias o habilidades basadas en el rasgo, no Facultad empleados. Este estudio de caso proporciona una valiosa contribución al centrarse en los empleados en un tipo de institución, una Universidad de investigación grande, público. Mientras que se ha documentado que no Facultad empleados brindan importantes aportes a la educación superior, hay más por descubrir acerca de esta población de empleados de la Universidad, señaló como empleados de los Estados Unidos más de 2 millones en 2011. ¿Fue la pregunta de investigación que guía este estudio: dentro de un ámbito universitario, cómo son las competencias del empleado valoradas por título del trabajo en universidades y divisiones?  Análisis de correspondencia múltiple había evaluado supervisor competencias selección de 1.836 no supervisión y 565 empleados supervisión utilizando los datos de evaluación del desempeño de la Universidad 2012. Empleados sin supervisión, la primera dimensión representaron el 65.11% de inercia ajustada o explicó la varianza. La segunda dimensión 23.89% de inercia ajustada. El hallazgo clave del estudio fue a pesar de la disponibilidad de otras alternativas de la competencia específica de la educación superior y las mejores prácticas para el uso de competencias en la evaluación, implementación de esta institución de competencias fue encontrado para ser mecánico. Este estudo de caso fornece uma contribuição valiosa, centrando-se sobre os funcionários em um tipo de instituição – uma grande, pública, Universidade. Embora tem sido documentado que os funcionários não-faculdade fornecem importantes contribuições para o ensino superior, há mais a ser descoberto sobre esta população de funcionários da Universidade, observou-se como funcionários de Estados Unidos mais de 2 milhões em 2011. A pergunta de pesquisa orientar este estudo foi: dentro de um cenário de Universidade, como são competências do empregado valorizadas pelo cargo dentro de faculdades e divisões? Análise de correspondência múltipla avaliada seleção de competências de supervisor para 1.836 não-supervisão e 565 funcionários supervisão usando os dados de avaliação de desempenho de 2012 da Universidade. Para empregados não-supervisão, primeira dimensão representou 65.11% da inércia ajustada ou variância, explicou. A segunda dimensão representou 23.89% da inércia ajustada. Para funcionários de fiscalização, a primeira dimensão representou 86.57% de inércia ajustada. A segunda dimensão representaram 8.26% da inércia ajustada.     On Deusons or Deuteronlike Meson-Meson Bound States

    The systematics of deuteronlike two-meson bound states, {\it deusons}, is discussed. Previous arguments that many of the present non-qqˉq\bar q states are such states are elaborated including, in particular, the tensor potential. For pseudoscalar states the important observation is made that the centrifugal barrier from the P-wave can be overcome by the 1/r21/r^2 and 1/r31/r^3 terms of the tensor potential. In the heavy meson sector one-pion exchange alone is strong enough to form at least deuteron-like BBˉB\bar B^* and BBˉB^*\bar B^* composites bound by approximately 50 MeV, while DDˉD\bar D^* and DDˉD^*\bar D^* states are expected near the threshold.Comment: Invited talk at the Hadron93 International Conf. on Hadron Spectroscopy, Como, Italy 22.-25.6. 1993. 5 pages in LATEX HU-SEFT R 1993-13

    Palliative care interventions for pediatric surgical patients: a systematic review.

    Introduction There is a growing body of evidence that pediatric palli- ative care increases patient quality of life and parent sat- isfaction. Furthermore, the scope of palliative care con- tinues to expand to include complex care and coordina- tion for chronically ill children who are not necessarily approaching end of life. Many ill children with palliative needs interact with surgical providers and teams. Little is known about the utilization or efficacy of palliative care referrals for pediatric surgical patients. Material and Methods To better understand the potential need for palliative care as well as barriers to accessing care among this vulnera- ble population, we performed a systematic review of Pub- Med, EMBASE, and Cinhal for relevant literature pub- lished from January 1, 2008 to March 1, 2018. Results 10 articles met inclusion criteria. No high-quality studies were identified. Conclusion The limited available evidence suggests an unmet need for pediatric palliative care. Barriers to access were iden- tified including lack of provider palliative care education, and reluctance of the primary team to refer patients to palliative care. Further study is warranted to better guide the use of palliative care for pediatric surgical patients

    Pancreatic Cancer Surgical Resection Margins: Molecular Assessment by Mass Spectrometry Imaging

    International audienceBackgroundSurgical resection with microscopically negative margins remains the main curative option for pancreatic cancer; however, in practice intraoperative delineation of resection margins is challenging. Ambient mass spectrometry imaging has emerged as a powerful technique for chemical imaging and real-time diagnosis of tissue samples. We applied an approach combining desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) statistical method to diagnose pancreatic tissue sections and prospectively evaluate surgical resection margins from pancreatic cancer surgery.Methods and FindingsOur methodology was developed and tested using 63 banked pancreatic cancer samples and 65 samples (tumor and specimen margins) collected prospectively during 32 pancreatectomies from February 27, 2013, to January 16, 2015. In total, mass spectra for 254,235 individual pixels were evaluated. When cross-validation was employed in the training set of samples, 98.1% agreement with histopathology was obtained. Using an independent set of samples, 98.6% agreement was achieved. We used a statistical approach to evaluate 177,727 mass spectra from samples with complex, mixed histology, achieving an agreement of 81%. The developed method showed agreement with frozen section evaluation of specimen margins in 24 of 32 surgical cases prospectively evaluated. In the remaining eight patients, margins were found to be positive by DESI-MSI/Lasso, but negative by frozen section analysis. The median overall survival after resection was only 10 mo for these eight patients as opposed to 26 mo for patients with negative margins by both techniques. This observation suggests that our method (as opposed to the standard method to date) was able to detect tumor involvement at the margin in patients who developed early recurrence. Nonetheless, a larger cohort of samples is needed to validate the findings described in this study. Careful evaluation of the long-term benefits to patients of the use of DESI-MSI for surgical margin evaluation is also needed to determine its value in clinical practice.ConclusionsOur findings provide evidence that the molecular information obtained by DESI-MSI/Lasso from pancreatic tissue samples has the potential to transform the evaluation of surgical specimens. With further development, we believe the described methodology could be routinely used for intraoperative surgical margin assessment of pancreatic cancer

    Observing Spontaneous Strong Parity Violation in Heavy-Ion Collisions

    We discuss the problem of observing spontaneous parity and CP violation in collision systems. We discuss and propose observables which may be used in heavy-ion collisions to observe such violations, as well as event-by-event methods to analyze the data. Finally, we discuss simple monte-carlo models of these CP violating effects which we have used to develop our techniques and from which we derive rough estimates of sensitivities to signals which may be seen at RHIC

    Resonant Steps in the Characteristics of a Josephson Junction Coupled to a Transmission Line

    A novel circuit is described which functions as an electronic analog of lumped element transmission line. The circuit requires only operational amplifiers, resistors, and capacitors. This module was coupled to a Josephsonj unction simulator and current voltage characteristics of the combined system were recorded. Steps were observed at voltages determined by the appropriate line resonances. When the transmission line was terminated with loads less than the characteristic impedance, chaos was seen in the lower steps. Similar results were obtained by numerical integration of the corresponding system of differential equations

    The rho -> gamma pi and omega -> gamma pi decays in quark-model approach and estimation of coupling for pion emission by quark

    In the framework of the relativistic and gauge invariant spectral integral technique, we calculate radiative decays rho(770)-> gamma pi(140) and omega(780)-> gamma pi(140) supposing all mesons (pi, rho and omega) to be quark-antiquark states. The q anti-q wave functions found for mesons and photon lead to a reasonably good description of data (Γρ±γπ±(exp)=68±30\Gamma^{(exp)}_{\rho^{\pm} \to\gamma\pi^{\pm}}=68\pm 30 keV, Γρ0γπ0(exp)=77±28\Gamma^{(exp)}_{\rho^{0}\to\gamma\pi^0}=77\pm 28 keV, Γωγπ0(exp)=776±45\Gamma^{(exp)}_{\omega\to\gamma\pi^0}=776\pm 45 keV) that makes it possible to estimate the coupling for the bremsstrahlung emission of pion by quarks gπgπ(udπ)g_\pi\equiv g_\pi (u\to d \pi). We have found two values for the pion bremsstrahlung coupling: gπ=16.7±0.32.3+0.1|g_\pi|=16.7 \pm 0.3 ^{+0.1}_{-2.3} (Solution I) and gπ=3.0±0.32.1+0.1|g_\pi|=3.0 \pm 0.3 ^{+0.1}_{-2.1} (Solution II). Within SU(6)-symmetry for nucleons, Solution I gives us for pi NN coupling the value 16.4gπNN2/(4π)23.216.4 \le g_{\pi NN}^2/(4\pi) \le 23.2 that is in qualitative agreement with the pi N scattering data, gπNN2/(4π)14g_{\pi NN}^2/(4\pi)\simeq 14. For excited states, we have estimated the partial widths in Solution I as follows: Γ(ρ2S±γπ)10130\Gamma (\rho_{2S}^\pm\to \gamma\pi)\simeq 10 - 130 keV, Γ(ρ2S0γπ)10130\Gamma (\rho_{2S}^0\to \gamma\pi)\simeq 10 -130 keV, Γ(ω2Sγπ)601080\Gamma (\omega_{2S}\to \gamma\pi)\simeq 60 - 1080 keV. The large uncertainties emphasise the necessity to carry out measurements of the meson radiative processes in the region of large masses.Comment: 23 pages in IOP forma

    Neutron Star Constraints on the H Dibaryon

    We study the influence of a possible H dibaryon condensate on the equation of state and the overall properties of neutron stars whose population otherwise contains nucleons and hyperons. In particular, we are interested in the question of whether neutron stars and their masses can be used to say anything about the existence and properties of the H dibaryon. We find that the equation of state is softened by the appearance of a dibaryon condensate and can result in a mass plateau for neutron stars. If the limiting neutron star mass is about that of the Hulse-Taylor pulsar a condensate of H dibaryons of vacuum mass 2.2 GeV and a moderately attractive potential in the medium could not be ruled out. On the other hand, if the medium potential were even moderately repulsive, the H, would not likely exist in neutron stars. If neutron stars of about 1.6 solar mass were known to exist, attractive medium effects for the H could be ruled out. Certain ranges of dibaryon mass and potential can be excluded by the mass of the Hulse-Taylor pulsar which we illustrate graphically.Comment: Revised by the addition of a figure showing the region of dibaryon mass and potential excluded by the Hulse-Taylor pulsar. 18 pages, 11 figures, latex (submitted to Phys.
