From local laboratory data to public domain database in search of indirect association of diseases: AJAX based gene data search engine.

This paper presents an extensible schema for capturing laboratory gene variance data with its meta-data properties in a semi-structured environment. This paper also focuses on the issues of creating a local and task specific component database which is a subset of global data resources. An XML based genetic disorder component database schema is developed with adequate flexibilities to facilitate searching of gene mutation data. A web based search engine is developed that allows researchers to query a set of gene parameters obtained from local XML schema and subsequently allow them to automatically establish a link with the public domain gene databases. The application applies AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML), a cutting-edge web technology, to carry out the gene data searching function

The interpretation of the field angle dependence of the critical current in defect-engineered superconductors

We apply the vortex path model of critical currents to a comprehensive analysis of contemporary data on defect-engineered superconductors, showing that it provides a consistent and detailed interpretation of the experimental data for a diverse range of materials. We address the question of whether electron mass anisotropy plays a role of any consequence in determining the form of this data and conclude that it does not. By abandoning this false interpretation of the data, we are able to make significant progress in understanding the real origin of the observed behavior. In particular, we are able to explain a number of common features in the data including shoulders at intermediate angles, a uniform response over a wide angular range and the greater discrimination between individual defect populations at higher fields. We also correct several misconceptions including the idea that a peak in the angular dependence of the critical current is a necessary signature of strong correlated pinning, and conversely that the existence of such a peak implies the existence of correlated pinning aligned to the particular direction. The consistency of the vortex path model with the principle of maximum entropy is introduced.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

Finite-size effects of a left-handed material slab on the image quality

The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a left-handed material (LHM) slab of finite length are studied, and the influence of the finite length of the slab on the image quality is analyzed. Unusual phenomena such as surface bright spots and negative energy stream at the image side are observed and explained as the cavity effects of surface plasmons excited by the evanescent components of the incident field. For a thin LHM slab, the cavity effects are found rather sensitive to the length of the slab, and the bright spots on the bottom surface of the slab may stretch to the image plane and degrade the image quality.Comment: changes in the content and the title, and also the figure

Experimental Realization of Br\"{u}schweiler's exponentially fast search algorithm in a homo-nuclear system

Compared with classical search algorithms, Grover quantum algorithm [ Phys. Rev. Lett., 79, 325(1997)] achieves quadratic speedup and Bruschweiler hybrid quantum algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett., 85, 4815(2000)] achieves an exponential speedup. In this paper, we report the experimental realization of the Bruschweiler$ algorithm in a 3-qubit NMR ensemble system. The pulse sequences are used for the algorithms and the measurement method used here is improved on that used by Bruschweiler, namely, instead of quantitatively measuring the spin projection of the ancilla bit, we utilize the shape of the ancilla bit spectrum. By simply judging the downwardness or upwardness of the corresponding peaks in an ancilla bit spectrum, the bit value of the marked state can be read out, especially, the geometric nature of this read-out can make the results more robust against errors.Comment: 10 pages and 3 figure
