    Partial level density of the n-quasiparticle excitations in the nuclei of the 39< A <201 region

    Level density and radiative strength functions are obtained from the analysis of two-step cascades intensities following the thermal neutrons capture. The data on level density are approximated by the sum of the partial level densities corresponding to n quasiparticles excitation. The most probable values of the collective enhancement factor of the level density are found together with the thresholds of the next Cooper nucleons pair breaking. These data allow one to calculate the level density of practically any nucleus in given spin window in the framework of model concepts, taking into account all known nuclear excitation types. The presence of an approximation results discrepancy with theoretical statements specifies the necessity of rather essentially developing the level density models. It also indicates the possibilities to obtain the essentially new information on nucleon correlation functions of the excited nucleus from the experiment.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

    FADS3 is a Δ14Z sphingoid base desaturase that contributes to gender differences in the human plasma sphingolipidome.

    Sphingolipids (SLs) are structurally diverse lipids that are defined by the presence of a long-chain base (LCB) backbone. Typically, LCBs contain a single Δ4E double bond (DB) (mostly d18:1), whereas the dienic LCB sphingadienine (d18:2) contains a second DB at the Δ14Z position. The enzyme introducing the Δ14Z DB is unknown. We analyzed the LCB plasma profile in a gender-, age-, and BMI-matched subgroup of the CoLaus cohort (n = 658). Sphingadienine levels showed a significant association with gender, being on average ∼30% higher in females. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) revealed variants in the fatty acid desaturase 3 (FADS3) gene to be significantly associated with the plasma d18:2/d18:1 ratio (p = -log 7.9). Metabolic labeling assays, FADS3 overexpression and knockdown approaches, and plasma LCB profiling in FADS3-deficient mice confirmed that FADS3 is a bona fide LCB desaturase and required for the introduction of the Δ14Z double bond. Moreover, we showed that FADS3 is required for the conversion of the atypical cytotoxic 1-deoxysphinganine (1-deoxySA, m18:0) to 1-deoxysphingosine (1-deoxySO, m18:1). HEK293 cells overexpressing FADS3 were more resistant to m18:0 toxicity than WT cells. In summary, using a combination of metabolic profiling and GWAS, we identified FADS3 to be essential for forming Δ14Z DB containing LCBs, such as d18:2 and m18:1. Our results unravel FADS3 as a Δ14Z LCB desaturase, thereby disclosing the last missing enzyme of the SL de novo synthesis pathway

    Modest effect on plaque progression and vasodilatory function in atherosclerosis-prone mice exposed to nanosized TiO2

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is growing evidence that exposure to small size particulate matter increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We investigated plaque progression and vasodilatory function in apolipoprotein E knockout (<it>ApoE</it><sup>-/-</sup>) mice exposed to TiO<sub>2</sub>. <it>ApoE</it><sup>-/- </sup>mice were intratracheally instilled (0.5 mg/kg bodyweight) with rutile fine TiO<sub>2 </sub>(fTiO<sub>2</sub>, 288 nm), photocatalytic 92/8 anatase/rutile TiO<sub>2 </sub>(pTiO<sub>2</sub>, 12 nm), or rutile nano TiO<sub>2 </sub>(nTiO<sub>2</sub>, 21.6 nm) at 26 and 2 hours before measurement of vasodilatory function in aorta segments mounted in myographs. The progression of atherosclerotic plaques in aorta was assessed in mice exposed to nanosized TiO<sub>2 </sub>(0.5 mg/kg bodyweight) once a week for 4 weeks. We measured mRNA levels of <it>Mcp-1</it>, <it>Mip-2</it>, <it>Vcam-1</it>, <it>Icam-1 </it>and <it>Vegf </it>in lung tissue to assess pulmonary inflammation and vascular function. TiO<sub>2</sub>-induced alterations in nitric oxide (NO) production were assessed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The exposure to nTiO<sub>2 </sub>was associated with a modest increase in plaque progression in aorta, whereas there were unaltered vasodilatory function and expression levels of <it>Mcp-1</it>, <it>Mip-2</it>, <it>Vcam-1</it>, <it>Icam-1 </it>and <it>Vegf </it>in lung tissue. The <it>ApoE<sup>-/- </sup></it>mice exposed to fine and photocatalytic TiO<sub>2 </sub>had unaltered vasodilatory function and lung tissue inflammatory gene expression. The unaltered NO-dependent vasodilatory function was supported by observations in HUVECs where the NO production was only increased by exposure to nTiO<sub>2</sub>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Repeated exposure to nanosized TiO<sub>2 </sub>particles was associated with modest plaque progression in <it>ApoE<sup>-/- </sup></it>mice. There were no associations between the pulmonary TiO<sub>2 </sub>exposure and inflammation or vasodilatory dysfunction.</p

    Iron Deficiency Anaemia In Reproductive Age Women Attending Obstetrics And Gynecology Outpatient Of University Health Centre In Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia

    Background: Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder in the world. The aim of this questionnaire based survey study was to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in reproductive age women, and their relation to variables such as age, marital status, education with those attending obstetrics and gynecology outpatient of King Faisal University Health Centre in Al-Ahsa in eastern region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted for the period of 6 month staring from September 2012 to February 2013. The questionnaire had three sections on personal information: their educational indicators, gynecological clinical history, and hematological indices.Results: The average age was 25.97±7.17 years. According to the  gynecological clinical history of the respondents, 15 (48.4%) respondents were pregnant while 16 (51.6%) were not pregnant. There was significant effect of pregnancy status on Hb level. Majority of the anemic respondents 15/17 were married. Moreover 14/17 anemic women were experiencing severe menstrual bleeding, 11/17 respondents were pregnant. 54.8% of respondents were hemoglobin deficient while 77.4% were found to have low Hct. In 87.1 % of the respondents, transferrin saturation was found to be abnormal.Conclusion: In this study iron deficiency anemia is quite prevalent in the university community especially among pregnant women. The fetus’s and newborn infant’s iron status depends on the iron status of the pregnant woman and therefore, iron deficiency in the mother-to-be means that growing fetus probably will be iron deficient as well. Thus iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy in well-educated set up needs more attention by the concerned authorities.Keywords: Iron deficiency Anemia (IDA), Hemoglobin, Female, Reproductive Age
