    The Development and Implementation of a Grief Support Program at Florida Hospital

    Problem With little or no formal grief support provided at Florida Hospital, an intentional bereavement facilitation program was needed. Many of the problems individuals face can be traced back to unresolved loss. The grief support program at Florida Hospital provides numerous avenues for the grief process to take place. This study describes the development and implementation of a comprehensive grief support program at Florida Hospital designed to enhance the bereavement process for those in grief and to provide assistance to care-givers involved in bereavement facilitation. Method There were various methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of this program. All 219 students who completed the weekly Grief Recovery program were invited to complete an evaluation. Two hundred twenty clergy who attended the 2003 and 2004 Clergy Bereavement Conference were invited to complete an evaluation. Thirty-five students who attended the 2003 and 2004 NAD Bereavement Facilitation Training were invited to complete an evaluation. The Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist was administered to two Grief Recovery support groups in 2002. The Grief Pattern Inventory was administered to two different Grief Recovery support groups in 2003. Results The results showed the positive effect that the grief support program has had on the community that Florida Hospital serves. This community includes the staff, patients, their families, and the broader central Florida community itself. Death education and support to the bereaved and to those who support the bereaved were shown to impact our society and the individuals in our society spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Scores in the Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist showed dramatic improvement. Evaluations indicated positive benefit and personal growth as a result of attending the support group or training seminar. Conclusion The grief support program at Florida Hospital is an effective program that provides necessary support and education to those who utilize this service. Until Jesus comes, there will continue to be a need to provide support to those who experience loss. The various pieces of the overall program at Florida Hospital work together to help build a necessary network of support for the community it serves

    The exploitation of pipeline parallelism by compile time dataflow analysis

    The automatic and implicit transformation of sequential instruction streams, which execute efficiently for pipelined architectures is the subject of this paper. This paper proposes a method which maximizes the parallel performance of an instruction pipeline by detecting and eliminating specific pipeline hazards known as resource conflicts. The detection of resource conflicts is accomplished with data dependence analysis, while the elimination of resource conflicts is accomplished by instruction stream code transformation. The transformation of instruction streams is guided by data dependence analysis, and dependence graphs. This thesis is based on the premise that the elimination of resource conflicts is synonymous with the elimination of specific arcs in the dependence graph. Examples will be given showing how detection and elimination of resource conflicts is possible through compiler optimization

    Self-referential cognition and empathy in autism.

    BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have profound impairments in the interpersonal social domain, but it is unclear if individuals with ASC also have impairments in the intrapersonal self-referential domain. We aimed to evaluate across several well validated measures in both domains, whether both self-referential cognition and empathy are impaired in ASC and whether these two domains are related to each other. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty adults aged 19-45, with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism and 30 age, sex, and IQ matched controls participated in the self-reference effect (SRE) paradigm. In the SRE paradigm, participants judged adjectives in relation to the self, a similar close other, a dissimilar non-close other, or for linguistic content. Recognition memory was later tested. After the SRE paradigm, several other complimentary self-referential cognitive measures were taken. Alexithymia and private self-consciousness were measured via self-report. Self-focused attention was measured on the Self-Focus Sentence Completion task. Empathy was measured with 3 self-report instruments and 1 performance measure of mentalizing (Eyes test). Self-reported autistic traits were also measured with the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ). Although individuals with ASC showed a significant SRE in memory, this bias was decreased compared to controls. Individuals with ASC also showed reduced memory for the self and a similar close other and also had concurrent impairments on measures of alexithymia, self-focused attention, and on all 4 empathy measures. Individual differences in self-referential cognition predicted mentalizing ability and self-reported autistic traits. More alexithymia and less self memory was predictive of larger mentalizing impairments and AQ scores regardless of diagnosis. In ASC, more self-focused attention is associated with better mentalizing ability and lower AQ scores, while in controls, more self-focused attention is associated with decreased mentalizing ability and higher AQ scores. Increasing private self-consciousness also predicted better mentalizing ability, but only for individuals with ASC. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that individuals with ASC have broad impairments in both self-referential cognition and empathy. These two domains are also intrinsically linked and support predictions made by simulation theory. Our results also highlight a specific dysfunction in ASC within cortical midlines structures of the brain such as the medial prefrontal cortex

    The finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions

    We report progress in our exploration of the finite-temperature phase structure of two-flavour lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action for a temporal lattice size Nt = 8. Extending our investigations to a wider region of parameter space we gain a global view of the rich phase structure. We identify the finite temperature transition/ crossover for a non-vanishing twisted-mass parameter in the neighbourhood of the zerotemperature critical line at sufficiently high b . Our findings are consistent with Creutz’s conjecture of a conical shape of the finite temperature transition surface. Comparing with NLO lattice cPT we achieve an improved understanding of this shape

    Scientometric Analyses of Studies on the Role of Innate Variation in Athletic Performance

    Historical events have produced an ideologically charged atmosphere in the USA surrounding the potential influences of innate variation on athletic performance. We tested the hypothesis that scientific studies of the role of innate variation in athletic performance were less likely to have authors with USA addresses than addresses elsewhere because of this cultural milieu. Using scientometric data collected from 290 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals from 2000–2012, we compared the proportions of authors with USA addresses with those that listed addresses elsewhere that studied the relationships between athletic performance and (a) prenatal exposure to androgens, as indicated by the ratio between digits 2 and 4, and (b) the genotypes for angiotensin converting enzyme, α-actinin-3, and myostatin; traits often associated with athletic performance. Authors with USA addresses were disproportionately underrepresented on papers about the role of innate variation in athletic performance. We searched NIH and NSF databases for grant proposals solicited or funded from 2000–2012 to determine if the proportion of authors that listed USA addresses was associated with funding patterns. NIH did not solicit grant proposals designed to examine these factors in the context of athletic performance and neither NIH nor NSF funded grants designed to study these topics. We think the combined effects of a lack of government funding and the avoidance of studying controversial or non-fundable topics by USA based scientists are responsible for the observation that authors with USA addresses were underrepresented on scientific papers examining the relationships between athletic performance and innate variation

    Pseudo-Critical Temperature and Thermal Equation of State from Nf = 2 Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

    We report about the current status of our ongoing study of the chiral limit of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature with twisted mass quarks. We estimate the pseudo-critical temperature Tc for three values of the pion mass in the range of mPS ~ 300 and 500 MeV and discuss different chiral scenarios. Furthermore, we present first preliminary results for the trace anomaly, pressure and energy density. We have studied several discretizations of Euclidean time up to Nt = 12 in order to assess the continuum limit of the trace anomaly. From its interpolation we evaluate the pressure and energy density employing the integral method. Here, we have focussed on two pion masses with mPS ~ 400 and 700 MeV
