    Exploring human capital: discrimination factors and group-specific performance in the football industry

    The aim of the study is to investigate whether discrimination factors exist within professional football clubs, concerning the management of their human capital, by analysing the correlation between the footballers’ wages and their performance. An analysis was conducted to show that discrimination, based both on nationality and race, can affect the strategies adopted by football club managers and in the professional footballer labour market, where players are considered to be the human capital of football enterprises. The research framework consists of an analysis of the existing literature on discrimination in sports and of a quantitative analysis based on an exploratory approach, where the wage differences among Italian Serie A league footballers are compared to the performance of each group of players (organised by race or nationality). The results of the analysis of data for all Italian Serie A clubs show that discrimination (in pay) exists against Italian and white players. In contrast, when small and big clubs are considered separately, the findings relating to small clubs highlight that foreign and black players face such discrimination. The results suggest that managers of professional football clubs apply a discrimination strategy. In addition, the results provide practical implications on the types of discrimination errors that are committed by the management of big and small football clubs. Big clubs tend to overrate the contributions of foreign and/or black players compared to those of Italian and white players, while small clubs tend to overrate the contributions of Italian and white players compared to those of foreign and black players. To reduce discrimination, clubs have to correlate how much players are paid with their performance. Further research is recommended to identify the impact of wage inequality on the football labour market and on professional team management

    TouriTerm: un database terminologico per la traduzione e redazione di testi turistici

    Tourist communication is notably bedevilled by poor quality translations. This paper reports on the development of a multilingual terminological and textual database, intended as a performance-enhancing tool in the process of translating tourist texts. Beside a cursory description of the project (i.e. data collection, corpus design and analysis, term extraction, data input), focus will be placed on the tool’s distinguishing feature, namely the integration of rich phraseological, textual and pragmatic information (e.g. collocations, communicative functions, usage notes, co-textual setting). Finally, translation-specific aspects will be highlighted by means of representative examples of how the database is going to record functional equivalents, especially with respect to the phraseological component that so remarkably contributes to the effectiveness of tourist communication

    Ongoing Challenges of Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion Processing of Al Alloys and Potential Solutions from the Literature—A Review

    Their high strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity have exponentially increased the interest in aluminium alloys in the context of laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) production. Although Al-based alloys are the third most investigated category of alloys in the literature and the second most used in industry, their processing by PBF-LB/M is often hampered by their considerable solidification shrinkage, tendency to oxidation, high laser reflectivity and poor powder flowability. For these reasons, high-strength Al-based alloys traditionally processed by conventional procedures have often proved to be unprintable with additive technology, so the design and development of new tailored Al-based alloys for PBF-LB/M production is necessary. The aim of the present work is to explore all the challenges encountered before, during and after the PBF-LB/M processing of Al-based alloys, in order to critically analyse the solutions proposed in the literature and suggest new approaches for addressing unsolved problems. The analysis covers the critical aspects in the literature as well as industrial needs, industrial patents published to date and possible future developments in the additive market

    Effect of Cu Content on the PBF-LB/M Processing of the Promising Al-Si-Cu-Mg Composition

    Over the past few years, several studies have been conducted on the development of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys for PBF-LB/M processing. The attention gained by these systems can be attributed to their light weight and strength provided by a solid solution in the as-built state and by precipitation after heat treatment. However, published studies have kept the copper content below its solubility limit in the Al-Cu binary system under equilibrium conditions (5.65 wt%). The present study aims to explore Al-Si-Cu-Mg systems with high copper content, starting with the well-known AlSi10Cu4Mg system, moving towards AlSi10Cu8Mg, and arriving at AlCu20Si10Mg, a system never before processed with PBF-LB/M. Through the SST approach, the production of bulk samples, advanced microstructural characterization by SEM and FESEM analysis, phase identification by XRD analysis, and preliminary investigation of the mechanical properties through Vickers micro indentations, the effects of copper quantities on the processability, microstructural properties, and mechanical behavior of these compositions were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated the benefits of the supersaturated solid solution and the fine precipitation resulting from the addition of high Cu contents. In particular, the AlCu20Si10Mg system showed a very distinctive microstructure and unprecedented microhardness values

    The Influence of Processing Parameters on the Al-Mn Enriched Nano-Precipitates Formation in a Novel Al-Mn-Cr-Zr Alloy Tailored for Power Bed Fusion-Laser Beam Process

    Among the recently developed compositions tailored for the power bed fusion-laser beam process (PBF-LB), the novel Al-Mn-Cr-Zr alloy stands out. This composition exploits high solid solution strengthening, achieving a high hardness value in the as-built condition. The produced samples are inherently crack-free and have a good level of densification (similar to 99.5%). The goal of this study is to investigate how this quaternary system is affected by the laser power while retaining a similar volumetric energy density. A comparison between the microstructural features and the mechanical performance was performed on a set of samples processed with power values ranging from 100 to 170 W. Microstructural features were investigated through optical microscopy, Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) investigation and feature analysis using advanced microscopy to examine the amount, distribution, and shape of precipitates in the different process conditions. Although the quantitative feature analysis permitted analysis of more than 60 k precipitates for each power condition, all samples demonstrated a low level of precipitation (below 0.3%) with nanometric size (around 75 nm). The mechanical performances of this quaternary system as a function of the laser power value were evaluated with a microhardness test, recording very similar values for the different process conditions with a mean value of approximately 104 HV. The results suggested a very stable system over the tested range of process parameters. In addition, considering the low level of precipitation of nanometric phases enriched in Al-Mn, a supersaturated state could be established in each process condition

    Glutathione concentration and gamma-glutamyltransferase activity in water buffalo colostrum

    Evidence is presented that the buffalo mammary gland contains enzymes that catalyse the synthesis and utilization of glutathione. A significant, inverse correlation (r = 0.79) was detected between colostrum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and glutathione (GSH), suggesting that the enzyme uses GSH as a substrate for its activity. A similar trend was shown in mammary gland homogenates (r = 0.75). Our results show that GSH is secreted into buffalo colostrum and suggest that the enzyme GGT degrades it. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the involvement of GGT-mediated GSH metabolism in the synthesis of colostrums, which elucidates the role of the enzyme that has always been reported very high in colostrum. © 2009 Blackwell Verlag GmbH

    Kunst kindgerecht erklärt – eine Fallstudie zu museumspädagogischen Erklärvideos

    As young visitors represent “the museum audience of the future”, museums should be particularly committed to engaging children in museum experiences pursuing a child-oriented approach to art communication and education. The analysis of museum communication from a linguistic perspective seems thus a promising way of exploring the target-group-specificity of museum educational resources explicitly designed for addressing young audiences. Explanatory videos featured on museum websites which present the museum itself or masterpieces of its collections are examples of digital tools employed by museums to introduce children to art and encouraging them to become devoted visitors. The paper presents the findings of a case study of a sample of German and Italian museum explanatory videos for primary school children, aiming at analyzing the linguistic and multimodal strategies used by museums in order to transfer knowledge about art, artists and exhibitions in a child-centered explanatory style. Of particular interest in this context is the question of whether and to what extent these videos encourage a participatory, play-based access to art or enable an experience-oriented approach to art-related contents, as advocated by current trends in museum communication and education
