Electron spin resonance on a 2-dimensional electron gas in a single AlAs quantum well
Direct electron spin resonance (ESR) on a high mobility two dimensional
electron gas in a single AlAs quantum well reveals an electronic -factor of
1.991 at 9.35 GHz and 1.989 at 34 GHz with a minimum linewidth of 7 Gauss. The
ESR amplitude and its temperature dependence suggest that the signal originates
from the effective magnetic field caused by the spin orbit-interaction and a
modulation of the electron wavevector caused by the microwave electric field.
This contrasts markedly to conventional ESR that detects through the microwave

The prevalence of insomnia in the general population in China: A meta-analysis
This is the first meta-analysis of the pooled prevalence of insomnia in the general population of China. A systematic literature search was conducted via the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Interne (CNKI), WanFang Data and SinoMed). Statistical analyses were performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis program. A total of 17 studies with 115,988 participants met the inclusion criteria for the analysis. The pooled prevalence of insomnia in China was 15.0% (95% Confidence interval [CI]: 12.1%-18.5%). No significant difference was found in the prevalence between genders or across time period. The pooled prevalence of insomnia in population with a mean age of 43.7 years and older (11.6%; 95% CI: 7.5%-17.6%) was significantly lower than in those with a mean age younger than 43.7 years (20.4%; 95% CI: 14.2%-28.2%). The prevalence of insomnia was significantly affected by the type of assessment tools (Q = 14.1, P = 0.001). The general population prevalence of insomnia in China is lower than those reported in Western countries but similar to those in Asian countries. Younger Chinese adults appear to suffer from more insomnia than older adults
Remote Hardware-In-the-Loop Measurement System for Electrolyser Characterization

The installation of facilities replicating the realworld condition is often required for carrying out meaningful tests on new devices and for collecting data with the aim to create realistic device model. However, these facilities require huge investments, as well as areas where they can be properly installed. In this paper, we present a test infrastructure exploiting the concept of Remote Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (RPHIL), applied for characterizing the performances of a 8kW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser installed at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen (The Netherlands). The electrolyser is subjected to different test conditions imposed both locally and remotely. The results show that this measurement procedure is effective and can open new perspectives in the way to share and exploit the existing research infrastructure in Europe
Ala54Thr Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 2 (FABP2) Polymorphism in Recurrent Depression: Associations with Fatty Acid Concentrations and Waist Circumference
BACKGROUND: Fatty acid (FA)-alterations may mediate the mutual association between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, etiology of observed FA-alterations in MDD and CVD remains largely unclear. An interesting candidate may be a mutation in the fatty acid-binding protein 2 (FABP2)-gene, because it regulates dietary FA-uptake. Therefore, we aimed to test the hypotheses that in MDD-patients the FABP2 Ala54Thr-polymorphism would be (I) more prevalent than in sex- and age-matched controls, (II) associated with observed alterations in FA-metabolism, and (III) associated with CVD-risk factor waist circumference. METHODS: We measured concentrations of 29 different erythrocyte FAs, FABP2-genotype, and waist circumference in recurrent MDD-patients and matched never-depressed controls. RESULTS: FABP2-genotype distribution did not significantly differ between the 137 MDD-patients and 73 matched controls. However, patients with the Ala54Thr-polymorphism had (I) higher concentrations of especially eicosadienoic acid (C20:2ω6; P=.009) and other 20-carbon FAs, and associated (II) lower waist circumference (P=.019). In addition, FABP2-genotype effects on waist circumference in patients seemed (I) mediated by its effect on C20:2ω6, and (II) different from controls. CONCLUSIONS: Although Ala54Thr-polymorphism distribution was not associated with recurrent MDD, our results indicate that FABP2 may play a role in the explanation of observed FA-alterations in MDD. For Ala54Thr-polymorphism patients, potentially adaptive conversion of increased bioavailable dietary precursors into eicosadienoic acid instead of arachidonic acid might be related to a low waist circumference. Because this is the first investigation of these associations, replication is warranted, preferably by nutrigenetic studies applying lipidomics and detailed dietary assessment
Coulomb Drag as a Probe of the Nature of Compressible States in a Magnetic Field
Magneto-drag reveals the nature of compressible states and the underlying
interplay of disorder and interactions. At \nu=3/2 a clear T^{4/3} dependence
is observed, which signifies the metallic nature of the N=0 Landau level. In
contrast, drag in higher Landau levels reveals an additional contribution,
which anomalously grows with decreasing T before turning to zero following a
thermal activation law. The anomalous drag is discussed in terms of
electron-hole asymmetry arising from disorder and localization, and the
crossover to normal drag at high fields as due to screening of disorder.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Activated Transport in the individual Layers that form the =1 Exciton Condensate
We observe the total filling factor =1 quantum Hall state in a
bilayer two-dimensional electron system with virtually no tunnelling. We find
thermally activated transport in the balanced system with a monotonic increase
of the activation energy with decreasing below 1.65. In the
imbalanced system we find activated transport in each of the layers separately,
yet the activation energies show a striking asymmetry around the balance point.
This implies that the gap to charge-excitations in the {\em individual} layers
is substantially different for positive and negative imbalance.Comment: 4 pages. 4 figure

Counting Your Customers the Easy Way: An Alternative to the Pareto/NBD Model
Today’s managers are very interested in predicting the future purchasing patterns of their customers, which can then serve as an input into “lifetime value” calculations. Among the models that provide such capabilities, the Pareto/NBD “counting your customers” framework proposed by Schmittlein et al. (1987) is highly regarded. However, despite the respect it has earned, it has proven to be a difficult model to implement, particularly because of computational challenges associated with parameter estimation.
We develop a new model, the beta-geometric/NBD (BG/NBD), which represents a slight variation in the behavioral “story” associated with the Pareto/NBD but is vastly easier to implement. We show, for instance, how its parameters can be obtained quite easily in Microsoft Excel. The two models yield very similar results in a wide variety of purchasing environments, leading us to suggest that the BG/NBD could be viewed as an attractive alternative to the Pareto/NBD in most applications
Exciton condensate at a total filling factor of 1 in Corbino 2D electron bilayers
Magneto-transport and drag measurements on a quasi-Corbino 2D electron
bilayer at the systems total filling factor 1 (v_tot=1) reveal a drag voltage
that is equal in magnitude to the drive voltage as soon as the two layers begin
to form the expected v_tot=1 exciton condensate. The identity of both voltages
remains present even at elevated temperatures of 0.25 K. The conductance in the
current carrying layer vanishes only in the limit of strong coupling between
the two layers and at T->0 K which suggests the presence of an excitonic
circular current
