Las políticas de regionalización transfronteriza en las fronteras interestatales de la Unión Europea se han convertido en un emblema de su construcción geográfico-política. A través de dotación institucional y de marcos legislativos, las periferias fronterizas se han ido transformando en centros de construcción de europeidad; localizada entre el sur de Galicia y el norte de Portugal, la Eurociudad Chaves-Verín será la herramienta de exposición y discusión de prácticas en torno a la resignificación de fronteras, abordadas como imaginarios espaciales paradójicos y en constante transformación

Border as Narration: Stories, Novels and Fictive Geographies of the Spanish-Portuguese Border

Este artículo propone la geografía literaria como herramienta de análisis de la construcción de imaginarios en torno a la frontera entre España y Portugal. Con el propósito de reflexionar en torno a las prácticas literarias como formas de conocimiento y como vehículos para voces distintivas, se realizará un análisis crítico de las geografías literarias de cinco textos (Terra Fría; Villardevós; O silencio redimido; Arraianos y O lobo guerrilheiro). En particular, se presentarán las representaciones espaciales de la frontera en el tramo de la Raya Seca galaico-portuguesa proyectadas en estas novelas. Aun compartiendo espacio diegético, la diferente procedencia de las fuentes literarias se conforma como un lugar significativo para las miradas cruzadas, desde donde leer las historias, los imaginarios fronterizos, y las geografías ficticias en torno a la frontera hispano-portuguesa.Literary geographies may be used as a tool to reflect on the making of imagination about the Spanish-Portuguese border. Thinking of literature as form of knowledge and as a way to circulate distinctive voices, a critical analysis of five novels will be developed. Incidence, Clinical Characteristics and Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Spain : Large-Scale Epidemiological Study

(1) Aims: To assess the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Spain, to describe the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics at diagnosis and the evolution of the disease, and to explore the use of drug treatments. (2) Methods: Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBD-Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBD-U)-during 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. (3) Results: We identified 3611 incident cases of IBD diagnosed during 2017 in 108 hospitals covering over 22 million inhabitants. The overall incidence (cases/100,000 person-years) was 16 for IBD, 7.5 for CD, 8 for UC, and 0.5 for IBD-U; 53% of patients were male and median age was 43 years (interquartile range = 31-56 years). During a median 12-month follow-up, 34% of patients were treated with systemic steroids, 25% with immunomodulators, 15% with biologics and 5.6% underwent surgery. The percentage of patients under these treatments was significantly higher in CD than UC and IBD-U. Use of systemic steroids and biologics was significantly higher in hospitals with high resources. In total, 28% of patients were hospitalized (35% CD and 22% UC patients, p < 0.01). (4) Conclusion: The incidence of IBD in Spain is rather high and similar to that reported in Northern Europe. IBD patients require substantial therapeutic resources, which are greater in CD and in hospitals with high resources, and much higher than previously reported. One third of patients are hospitalized in the first year after diagnosis and a relevant proportion undergo surgery

Lugar y política: el apoyo electoral al Bloque Nacionalista Galego (1977-2002): los casos de Allariz y Fene

El objeto de estudio de esta tesis es la presencia electoral y social de un partido nacionalista en el contexto del Estado español. En concreto, la trayectoria del Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG), partido nacionalista cuya importancia, en términos de su conformación como alternativa de poder en la comunidad autónoma de Galicia, se ha concretado en un gobierno de coalición tras las elecciones autonómicas celebradas en junio de 2005. En esta investigación, a partir de la conexión entre la representación cartográfica del apoyo electoral al BNG desde 1977 hasta 2002 con un marco de reflexión sobre los contextos en los que se significa la participación política, se aborda el estudio de las prácticas políticas desarrolladas en torno a la idea de Nación. Así, el planteamiento general de la tesis podría resumirse en la siguiente hipótesis de trabajo: la homogeneidad evocada por un grupo de actores políticos en torno a la idea de Nación es simultánea a la heterogeneidad de visiones, proyectos y prácticas políticas ligadas a ella. Otros objetivos que esta tesis pretende cumplir serían el de realizar una geografía electoral del nacionalismo gallego, por un lado, y el de profundizar en un marco teórico planteado desde la confluencia entre Teoría Social y Geografía Humana

Scalar politics of border heritage: an examination of the EU’s northern and southern border areas

This paper studies the production and representation of border heritage in tourist sites and events. Understanding heritage as a form of collective memory, subject to continual active renegotiation in which past events and artifacts are portrayed selectively, border heritage is a focal element in the shaping of spatial identities. The empirical focus is on the EU border regions that have become arenas for collaborative tourism development. Since the internal border regions are the key sites of the territorial cohesion policy of the EU, the selection of a particular heritage may be indicative of the development of the spatial identities in the area. Yet the type of the border has an impact on the modes of heritage-making. Drawing on various materials, documents and fieldwork at sites of heritage tourism, the study examines how the traditions and past events of the Finnish-Swedish and SpanishPortuguese borders are memorialized in EU-funded tourism development. The approaches of geographical scale and scalar politics are employed as an analytical lens through which the sites and events of border heritage-making are examined. The study shows that border heritage in the EU border areas is constructed through multiple scales, thus offering parallel versions of the past

"La Paz We Want": Legal Geography, Urban Imagination and the Forms of the City in La Paz (Bolivia)

The aim of this article is to reflect on the making of imaginaries about the public space in the urban planning of the city of La Paz (Bolivia). To do this, we will turn to legal geography, as a theoretical framework that analyses the interactions between the regulations of public institutions and space planning. Our hypothesis is that the geographical imaginaries that project these documents construct spatial representations of the city and define the uses of the urban territory. In terms of methodology, we propose an analysis of the contents of "La Paz que queremos", an integral urban plan that would cover 2015 to 2040. For this analysis, we will work on three lines of meaning: on the one hand, the different scales present in the planning urban city; on the other, the urban cartographic imaginations projected from the document; and finally, around the narratives about Bolivia and the urban, to close with a brief discussion about the representations of the urban, the public policies and the geographical imagination of the space for the cities.El objetivo de este artículo es acercarnos al proceso de producción de los imaginarios sobre el espacio público en el planeamiento urbanístico de la ciudad de La Paz (Bolivia). Para ello, recurriremos a la geografía legal, como marco teórico que analiza las interacciones entre las normativas de las instituciones públicas y la planificación del espacio; nuestra hipótesis es que los imaginarios geográficos que proyectan dichos documentos construyen representaciones espaciales de la ciudad y definen los usos del territorio urbano. En términos de metodología, realizaremos un análisis de contenidos de “La Paz que queremos”, plan integral urbano que abarcaría de 2015 a 2040. Para dicho análisis, trabajaremos sobre tres líneas de significado: por un lado, las diferentes escalas presentes en la planificación urbana de la ciudad; por otro, las imaginaciones cartográficas urbanas proyectadas desde el documento; y finalmente, en torno a las narrativas sobre Bolivia y lo urbano, para cerrar con una breve discusión en torno a las representaciones de lo urbano, los poderes públicos y la imaginación geográfica del espacio de las ciudades
