Force networks and the dynamic approach to jamming in sheared granular media
Diverging correlation lengths on either side of the jamming transition are
used to formulate a rheological model of granular shear flow, based on the
propagation of stress through force chain networks. The model predicts three
distinct flow regimes, characterized by the shear rate dependence of the stress
tensor, that have been observed in both simulations and experiments. The
boundaries separating the flow regimes are quantitatively determined and
testable. In the limit of jammed granular solids, the model predicts the
observed anomalous scaling of the shear modulus and a new relation for the
shear strain at yield

Generic changes in United States Issini (Hemiptera, Fulgoroidea, Issidae)
Three new genera of the family Issidae are described for species formerly included in the genus Hysteropterum sensu lato: Balduza Gnezdilov and O’Brien, gen. n. (type species: Hysteropterum unum Ball 1910), Stilbometopius Gnezdilov and O’Brien, gen. n. (type species: Issus auroreus Uhler 1876), Abolloptera Gnezdilov and O’Brien, gen. n. (type species: Hysteropterum bistriatum Caldwell 1945),. The genus Tylanira Ball 1936 is redescribed. The male genitalia of Tylanira bifurca Ball 1936 is described and illustrated. Tylana ustulata Uhler 1876 is transfered to Tylanira. Hysteropterum bufo Van Duzee 1923 is transfered to Balduza gen. n. and the male genitalia of the species is described and illustrated. The subgenus Paralixes Caldwell 1945 of the genus Ulixes Stål 1861 is raised to genus – Paralixes Caldwell 1945, stat. n. A key to the issid genera of the United States is given. New data on the distribution of 7 species are given
Interplay between the Reactions to Light and to Gravity in Phycomyces
Sporangiophores of Phycomyces do not grow directly towards a horizontal beam of light, but equilibrate at an angle of about 30° above the horizontal. After describing several related observations, this paper suggests that the dioptric properties of an obliquely illuminated cylindrical lens, illustrated by a dummy cell, as well as a negative geotropic response, play major roles in determining the direction of growth. The shift of the equilibrium direction of growth towards the vertical, or a purely geotropic response, over a tenfold range of very low intensities (around 10^6 quanta/cm^2 sec., or 10^-13 watt/cm^2) has been studied, and an action spectrum made, measuring the quantum fluxes producing a standard intermediate equilibrium direction of growth at different wavelengths. This may differ from the action spectra at higher intensities in lacking conspicuous maxima from 370 to 490 mµ. However, in the ultraviolet it parallels the other spectra, although without showing the much higher quantum efficiency of ultraviolet relative to visible light previously noted. Possible interpretations are discussed
Management Control Systems and Contextual Variables in the Hospitality Industry
Purpose – The paper examined management control systems (MCS) in Indonesian hospitality
sector. This study examines the impact of six contextual factors at one time to determine the
importance of each factor on the design of MCS.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based upon data collected through a survey sent
to “star” hotels in Central Java, Indonesia. Using Chenhall (2003) design, a regression equation
is run to examine the relationship between MCS and the contextual variables of environment,
technology, structure, size, strategy and culture.
Findings – The paper finds that higher levels of the contextual variables of technology, structure,
and culture are related to more sophisticated MCS while size is related to more traditional MCS.
Research limitations/implications –These findings are related to the hospitality industry in
Indonesia. Future research could examine different settings (i.e. country, industry, etc) and
investigate the effect of each contextual variable on the relationships between MCS and firm
performance.
Originality/value – The present study extends the scope of MCS system in accounting literature
by testing Chenhall (2003) works on the relationship between contextual variables and MCS. It
attempts to fill the gap in contingency-based studies that have previously focused on one aspect
of contingency by considering six contextual factors. Furthermore, this paper also contributes to
a fuller understanding of MCS practices in Indonesia and the hospitality industry and helps
management in determining its most effective design.

Reparable Harm: Assessing and Addressing Disparities Faced by Boys and Men of Color in California
The California Endowment commissioned this report to highlight the most glaring inequities in socioeconomics, health, safety, and education faced by African-American and Latino men and boys in the state. In addition to presenting the statistics on these indicators, the authors outline a framework for addressing the disparities at the individual, community, and macro levels
The Breakdown of Kinetic Theory in Granular Shear Flows
We examine two basic assumptions of kinetic theory-- binary collisions and
molecular chaos-- using numerical simulations of sheared granular materials. We
investigate a wide range of densities and restitution coefficients and
demonstrate that kinetic theory breaks down at large density and small
restitution coefficients. In the regimes where kinetic theory fails, there is
an associated emergence of clusters of spatially correlated grains
