    Magnetic properties of the Anderson model: a local moment approach

    We develop a local moment approach to static properties of the symmetric Anderson model in the presence of a magnetic field, focussing in particular on the strong coupling Kondo regime. The approach is innately simple and physically transparent; but is found to give good agreement, for essentially all field strengths, with exact results for the Wilson ratio, impurity magnetization, spin susceptibility and related properties.Comment: 7 pages, 3 postscript figues. While many variants of the basic BDI model have been proposed in the literature, there has been no systematic review of research on BDI agent architectures in over 10 years. In this paper, we survey the main approaches to each component of the BDI architecture, how these have been realised in agent programming languages, and discuss the trade-offs inherent in each approach

    Field-dependent dynamics of the Anderson impurity model

    Single-particle dynamics of the Anderson impurity model in the presence of a magnetic field HH are considered, using a recently developed local moment approach that encompasses all energy scales, field and interaction strengths. For strong coupling in particular, the Kondo scaling regime is recovered. Here the frequency (ω/ωK\omega/\omega_{\rm K}) and field (H/ωKH/\omega_{\rm K}) dependence of the resultant universal scaling spectrum is obtained in large part analytically, and the field-induced destruction of the Kondo resonance investigated. The scaling spectrum is found to exhibit the slow logarithmic tails recently shown to dominate the zero-field scaling spectrum. At the opposite extreme of the Fermi level, it gives asymptotically exact agreement with results for statics known from the Bethe ansatz. Good agreement is also found with the frequency and field-dependence of recent numerical renormalization group calculations. Differential conductance experiments on quantum dots in the presence of a magnetic field are likewise considered; and appear to be well accounted for by the theory. Some new exact results for the problem are also established

    Zero-bias conductance in carbon nanotube quantum dots

    We present numerical renormalization group calculations for the zero-bias conductance of quantum dots made from semiconducting carbon nanotubes. These explain and reproduce the thermal evolution of the conductance for different groups of orbitals, as the dot-lead tunnel coupling is varied and the system evolves from correlated Kondo behavior to more weakly correlated regimes. For integer fillings N=1,2,3N=1,2,3 of an SU(4) model, we find universal scaling behavior of the conductance that is distinct from the standard SU(2) universal conductance, and concurs quantitatively with experiment. Our results also agree qualitatively with experimental differential conductance maps.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Local quantum phase transition in the pseudogap Anderson model: scales, scaling and quantum critical dynamics

    The pseudogap Anderson impurity model provides a paradigm for understanding local quantum phase transitions, in this case between generalised fermi liquid and degenerate local moment phases. Here we develop a non-perturbative local moment approach to the generic asymmetric model, encompassing all energy scales and interaction strengths and leading thereby to a rich description of the problem. We investigate in particular underlying phase boundaries, the critical behaviour of relevant low-energy scales, and single-particle dynamics embodied in the local spectrum. Particular attention is given to the resultant universal scaling behaviour of dynamics close to the transition in both the GFL and LM phases, the scale-free physics characteristic of the quantum critical point itself, and the relation between the two.Comment: 39 pages, 19 figure

If the tails of Xi are sufficiently smooth and satisfy P(Xi \u3e t) ∌ rt−α and P(Xi \u3c −t) ∌ lt−α as t→∞, where 0 \u3c α \u3c 2, r \u3e 0, l \u3e 0, Sn(2) still has a limiting distribution F even though Xi has infinite variance. The density f of F depends on α as well as on r/l. We also study the limiting distribution of the more general Sn(p) = (∑ni=1Xi)/(∑nj=1 |Xj|p)1/p where Xi are i.i.d. and in the domain of a stable law G with tails as above. In the cases p = 2 (see (4.21)) and p = 1 (see (3.7)) we obtain exact, computable formulas for f(t) = f(t,α,r/l), and give graphs of f for a number of values of α and r/l. For p = 2, we find that f is always symmetric about zero on (−1,1), even though f is symmetric on (−∞,∞) only when r = l

    The ecology of a new invasion by Bellamya japonica in the Savannah basin

    The first known infestation of Bellamya japonica in the Savannah River Basin was discovered in 2006. Investigations of this population led to questions regarding their distribution and behavior. We have completed experiments on behavior and concluded that there exists a significant negative phototactic but no detectable geotactic response. In addition, a study of their dispersal using mark-recapture methods concluded that, while this technique was useful to follow the life history of individual snails, they did not meet the method assumptions and therefore this method could not produce a reliable population estimate. Studies of fecundity have shown a seasonal trend with an unsurprising correlation to water temperatures and time-of-year. Fecundity rates are still being assessed. Age is difficult to determine and the life history studies using marked snails will assist with this as well. Metabolism is unknown for this species but methods are currently being developed. Anecdotal observations suggested a possible circadian rhythm with regard to fecundity. A systematic study of this phenomenon is also in progress. If successful our studies may help with management of this infestation in the future

    Good images, effective messages? Working with students and educators on academic practice understanding

    Work at Northumbria University has focussed on activity that extends opportunities for students to engage directly with the skills development necessary for sound academic practice. This has included highly visual campaigns on the "Plagiarism trap", providing access to Turnitin plagiarism detection software, guides and sessions to highlight use of associated referencing tools. Sessions on a variety of topics, such as supporting study skills and reading originality reports, have been provided for students on taught, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This provision has included students working on collaborative partners' sites and also those on research programmes. Alongside the activities with students, "designing out" approaches have been embedded in staff development within the educator community at Northumbria. Formative use of Turnitin is integrated throughout programmes and academic practice development is formally recognised within the University Learning and Teaching Strategy's focus on information literacy. This article outlines and reviews these activities in a critical institutional context and evaluates responses from a variety of students and educators to determine how effective these measures have been
