    Establishing the national boundaries

Citation: Logan, Daniel Andrew. Establishing the national boundaries. Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1905.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: The boundary line of a country is a matter of small significance when it happens to be land bordering on the water, but on such places on the land it is often the cause of constant irritation and disputes between the two adjacent countries. The boundary line decides whether or not a person must obey one or another code of laws and fight for one or another country. It is a very difficult matter to run a boundary line over a country or continent. The first difficulty lies in the fact that the people on each side of the boundary line are about the same. They live the same, have the same habits and customs, yet they are governed by a different set of officials and must obey a different code of laws. Another difficulty lies in the fact that the line is more or less imaginary and inaccurate, due to the inaccuracy of our surveying instruments and to our natural aptitude of being greedy. Oceans, lakes and rivers form the best boundary lines. Other land marks such as chain of highlands or a watershed also form natural boundaries

Supervising sex offenders in the community

At the core of this exploratory research project, which sets out to examine community supervision of men convicted of sexual offences, is the introduction and development of a new model; the Sex Offender Risk Management Approach (SORMA). Essentially, SORMA describes a system of multi-agency risk management of sexual offenders in the community, and in so doing, utilizes the most convincing, comprehensive and influential research, models and theories that contribute to current thinking about control and treatment of sex offenders. In this concerted attempt to develop, through research, a model which harnesses the established value of credible and valid methods of intervention, the reader will recognise elements originating from key strands of celebrated work. SORMA is not, however, a simple re-arrangement of these existing contributing components. Vital as they are, they undergo critical analysis and are challenged, at times with considerable rigour to identify evidence to support existing claims of efficacy. SORMA does not add further conjecture to the existing and, some may say, complacent quasi-therapeutic treatment orthodoxy; rather, it disturbs it, to provide a reconsideration of the aims and purpose of the work, finding a broader context in which to examine these existing intervention strategies. The political and professional values that underpin this work are considered as are the ethical boundaries of probation supervision. SORMA involves seven key components and each of these is explored in this work. The development of this model and the testing of it are detailed in the subsequent chapters. I will say no more about it at this point other than to invite the reader to consider these components together in their condensed form, for an oversight at this point will help to project the critical elements used to compose this research and fashion the outcomes. SORMA is: 1) Unambiguously concerned with Social Control 2) Clinical Treatment and Therapy 3) Situational Crime Prevention 4) Actuarial Risk Assessment and Management 5) Surveillance 6) Multi-Agency Collaboration 7) Maximisation of Legislative Authority. These components are examined in Chapters 1-3 where they withstand analysis to provide the foundation for SORMA. This is presented as layered discussion guiding the reader through each separate area, whilst constructing the framework of the model itself. In the subsequent chapters, SORMA is fashioned, applied and discussed. Appearing as it does in the final chapter SORMA, as a processual model, becomes a practice utility ripe for implementation and further development

Are Immigrants The Next Great Appliance? The Effects of Immigration on Female Labor Force Participation

    Get PDF
This paper argues the burgeoning idea that an inflow of low-skilled immigrants into a receiving country can provide benefits for high-skilled native women. In considering the often increased responsibilities held by women in the household, when compared to men, the introduction of immigrants of certain occupations can help ease these responsibilities. A series of regressions explain that the effect is statistically significant, especially when considering low-skilled female immigrants. Policy implications are discussed as well as areas for future research. The paper concludes with a brief secondary theory and discourse on the labor constraints of women

Vocational training and knowledge development:a deeper understanding

    Get PDF
Construction management research literature has identified the importance of understanding the practical realities of skills and training provision and the role of reflective practice in the development of knowledge. This paper examines vocational training of experienced site staff in the development of their knowledge through SVQ training to investigate the primary factors for successful learning in site-based construction staff with a supervisory/management role. Using semi-structured interviews the impact of vocational training on individual candidates and other sitebased staff are investigated. The paper explores, through the reflections of 26 SVQ candidates (20 SVQ3 and 6 SVQ4), a deeper understanding of how site supervisors and site managers learn through the SVQ process and develop tacit knowledge through formal reflection. Reflective practice develops practical wisdom (Phronesis). The investigation explains aspects of practical wisdom and how knowledge, practice and skills are developed through vocational training. There is a clear perception by those completing the qualification that it has enabled them to perform their job better identifying numerous examples relating to problem solving, critical thinking, making decisions and leadership. It has been found that Phronesis is evident on a day-to-day basis on site activities developed through reflective practice in personal development. The reflective practice in developing knowledge also builds, within individuals, a better understanding of themselves and their capabilities through the learning achieved in the SVQ. Future work is identified around analysing the role of the assessor in facilitating Phronesis in the SVQ context

A Practical Guide to Operator/ Surface-Owner Disputes and the Current State of the Accommodation Doctrine

    Get PDF
This Article provides an overview of the operator\u27s rights and a practical guide to the procedures available to enforce them. Of particular emphasis, this Article will discuss how an operator can use injunctive relief to prevent surface-owner interference, and will specifically provide a checklist of sorts for how an operator can obtain a temporary restraining order. This Article will also address how the operator\u27s rights can be limited by the accommodation doctrine. In this regard, this Article will examine how the accommodation doctrine is triggered, what the surface owner must prove when asserting the accommodation doctrine, and whether the accommodation doctrine provides a mechanism for the surface owner to recover damages from the operator for unreasonable surface use

Leveraging biotechnologies to understand the mechanisms by which California market squid achieve camouflage

The California market squid has specialized skin that is able to manipulate light through reversible condensation and assembly of reflectin proteins, allowing the squid to tune its skin iridescence for precise camouflage and underwater communication. Differential phosphorylation of reflectin proteins is observed to be contaminant with the reversible condensation and hierarchical assembly of reflectin proteins. Our mechanistic understanding of the role of protein phosphorylation in reflectin-mediated iridescence remains incomplete due to the inability to obtain large quantities (\u3elmg) of a homogenous population of phosphorylated reflectins. To overcome this limitation, we propose to leverage state-of-the-art biotechnologies. These include 1) an engineered f. coli strain with an expanded genetic code and 2) an orthogonal translation system capable of site-specific incorporation of phosphoserine into proteins. We will aim to mimic the squid by incorporating phosphoserine into reflectin in a genetically encoded manner. To accomplish this, the learning-objectives-by-doing in this interdisciplinary project will be: cloning the reflectin Al gene, constructing mutants, protein expression in a bacterial system, and purification of site-specifically phosphorylated variants of reflectins. Our work will provide the foundation for elucidating the role of phosphorylation in reflectin-mediated camouflage in marine organisms
