Realization of efficient quantum gates with a superconducting qubit-qutrit circuit
Building a quantum computer is a daunting challenge since it requires good
control but also good isolation from the environment to minimize decoherence.
It is therefore important to realize quantum gates efficiently, using as few
operations as possible, to reduce the amount of required control and operation
time and thus improve the quantum state coherence. Here we propose a
superconducting circuit for implementing a tunable system consisting of a
qutrit coupled to two qubits. This system can efficiently accomplish various
quantum information tasks, including generation of entanglement of the two
qubits and conditional three-qubit quantum gates, such as the Toffoli and
Fredkin gates. Furthermore, the system realizes a conditional geometric gate
which may be used for holonomic (non-adiabatic) quantum computing. The
efficiency, robustness and universality of the presented circuit makes it a
promising candidate to serve as a building block for larger networks capable of
performing involved quantum computational tasks.Comment: 27 pages including technical supplementary information, 9 figures,

Obstetric and perinatal risks after the use of donor sperm : A systematic review and meta-analysis
Donor sperm is widely used in infertility treatments. The purpose of the study was to investigate, whether use of donor sperm in intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments affect maternal and perinatal risks compared with spontaneously conceived pregnancies or use of partner sperm in IUI, IVF or ICSI. We provide a systematic review and meta-analyses on the most clinically relevant obstetric and perinatal outcomes after use of donor sperm compared with partner sperm: hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preeclampsia, low birth weight, and preterm birth. Our meta-analyses showed an increased risk for preeclampsia (pooled adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.77, 95% CI 1.26-2.48) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (pooled aOR 1.55, 95%, CI 1.20-2.00) in pregnancies resulting from IUI with donor sperm compared with IUI with partner sperm. No increased risk was seen for low birth weight or preterm birth after the use of donor sperm in IUI compared with the use of partner sperm in IUI. Subgroup analysis for singletons only did not change these results. The meta-analysis on low birth weight showed a lower risk after in IVF with donor sperm compared with IVF with partner sperm (pooled aOR 0.89, 95% CI 0.83-0.94). For hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preeclampsia and preterm birth, no difference was found between IVF with donor sperm vs. partner sperm. Patients need to be informed about the moderately increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preeclampsia in pregnancies after IUI with donor sperm.Peer reviewe
Annihilation of Charged Particles
The kinetics of irreversible annihilation of charged particles performing
overdamped motion induced by long-range interaction force, , is investigated. The system exhibits rich kinetic behaviors
depending on the force exponent . In one dimension we find that the
densities decay as and when
and , respectively, with logarithmic correction at
. For , the asymptotic behavior is shown to be
dependent on system size.Comment: 17 pages, plain TeX, 3 figures available upon request from

Green tea extract only affects markers of oxidative status postprandially: lasting antioxidant effect of flavonoid-free diet
Epidemiological studies suggest that foods rich in flavonoids might reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of green tea extract (GTE) used as a food antioxidant on markers of oxidative status after dietary depletion of flavonoids and catechins. The study was designed as a 2×3 weeks blinded human cross-over intervention study (eight smokers, eight non-smokers) with GTE corresponding to a daily intake of 18·6 mg catechins/d. The GTE was incorporated into meat patties and consumed with a strictly controlled diet otherwise low in flavonoids. GTE intervention increased plasma antioxidant capacity from 1·35 to 1·56 (P<0·02) in postprandially collected plasma, most prominently in smokers. The intervention did not significantly affect markers in fasting blood samples, including plasma or haemoglobin protein oxidation, plasma oxidation lagtime, or activities of the erythrocyte superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and catalase. Neither were fasting plasma triacylglycerol, cholesterol, α-tocopherol, retinol, β-carotene, or ascorbic acid affected by intervention. Urinary 8-oxo-deoxyguanosine excretion was also unaffected. Catechins from the extract were excreted into urine with a half-life of less than 2 h in accordance with the short-term effects on plasma antioxidant capacity. Since no long-term effects of GTE were observed, the study essentially served as a fruit and vegetables depletion study. The overall effect of the 10-week period without dietary fruits and vegetables was a decrease in oxidative damage to DNA, blood proteins, and plasma lipids, concomitantly with marked changes in antioxidative defenc
