RXTE Investigation into Extended Hard X-ray Emission from Elliptical Galaxies
We present results of the first RXTE investigation of hard X-ray emission
from normal elliptical galaxies. Joint spectral analysis of RXTE PCA and ASCA
GIS data for NGC 4472 and NGC 4649 reveals the presence of about 5 10^-12 erg
cm^-2 s^-1 of 2-10 keV emission emanating from a region outside of the optical
galaxy, and of a spectral hardness intermediate between the galactic hot
interstellar gas and X-ray binary components. A large fraction of this emission
originates in the Virgo intracluster medium (ICM) and we present constraints on
the ICM temperature and metallicity in the vicinity of these two galaxies.
However, the diffuse flux is significantly greater than expected based on the
soft X-ray intensity measured with ROSAT, allowing for the possible presence of
an additional diffuse non-thermal component. We also derive new constraints on
the integrated X-ray binary emission from these two galaxies, and on the
presence of a nuclear flat-spectrum point source.Comment: 26 pages Latex including 8 encapsulated postscript files; ApJ, in

Six-year follow-up of the treatment of patients with dissociative disorders study*
Objective: Literature on the treatment of dissociative disorders (DDs) suggests that these individuals require long-term and specialized treatment to achieve stabilization and functionality. There is considerable empirical support for specialized phasic, dissociation-focused treatment in reducing a myriad of psychological symptoms and self-harm in this population. However, until recently, there has been a paucity of longitudinal treatment research on DD patients
The star formation histories of low surface brightness galaxies
We have performed deep imaging of a diverse sample of 26 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) in the optical and the near-infrared. Using stellar population synthesis models, we find that it is possible to place constraints on the ratio of young to old stars (which we parametrize in terms of the average age of the galaxy), as well as the metallicity of the galaxy, using optical and near-infrared colours. LSBGs have a wide range of morphologies and stellar populations, ranging from older, high-metallicity earlier types to much younger and lower-metallicity late-type galaxies. Despite this wide range of star formation histories, we find that colour gradients are common in LSBGs. These are most naturally interpreted as gradients in mean stellar age, with the outer regions of LSBGs having lower ages than their inner regions. In an attempt to understand what drives the differences in LSBG stellar populations, we compare LSBG average ages and metallicities with their physical parameters. Strong correlations are seen between an LSBG's star formation history and its K-band surface brightness, K-band absolute magnitude and gas fraction. These correlations are consistent with a scenario in which the star formation history of an LSBG primarily correlates with its surface density and its metallicity correlates with both its mass and its surface densit
Giving is a question of time: Response times and contributions to a real world public good
Recent experimental research has examined whether contributions to public goods can be traced back to intuitive or deliberative decision-making, using response times in public good games in order to identify the specific decision process at work. In light of conflicting results, this paper reports on an analysis of response time data from an online experiment in which over 3400 subjects from the general population decided whether to contribute to a real world public good. The between-subjects evidence confirms a strong positive link between contributing and deliberation and between free-riding and intuition. The average response time of contributors is 40 percent higher than that of free-riders. A within-subject analysis reveals that for a given individual, contributing significantly increases and free-riding significantly decreases the amount of deliberation required
Avian Influenza Risk Perception, Hong Kong
A telephone survey of 986 Hong Kong households determined exposure and risk perception of avian influenza from live chicken sales. Householders bought 38,370,000 live chickens; 11% touched them when buying, generating 4,220,000 exposures annually; 36% (95% confidence interval [CI] 33%–39%) perceived this as risky, 9% (7%–11%) estimated >50% likelihood of resultant sickness, whereas 46% (43%–49%) said friends worried about such sickness. Recent China travel (adjusted odds ratio 0.35; CI 0.13–0.91), traditional beliefs (1.20, 1.06–1.13), willingness to change (0.29, 0.11–0.81) and believing cooking protects against avian influenza (8.66, 1.61-46.68) predicted buying. Birth in China (2.79, 1.43–5.44) or overseas (4.23, 1.43–12.53) and unemployment (3.87, 1.24–12.07) predicted touching. Age, avian influenza contagion worries, husbandry threat, avian influenza threat, and avian influenza anxiety predicted perceived sickness risk. High population exposures to live chickens and low perceived risk are potentially important health threats in avian influenza
