    Higher Order Two Step Mechanisms in Nucleon Antinucleon Annihilation and the OZI Rule

    We evaluate three meson doorway mechanisms for nucleon-antinucleon annihilation at rest for the first time. Detailed results are presented for the final state phi pi0 originating from the 3S1 initial state and for the phi rho channel originating from 1S0. The results presented also include the improved contributions from two meson doorway states and from the tree diagrams. For all the channels considered a consistent explanation of large and small OZI violations emerges.Comment: 18 pages, 2 PostScript figures, will be published in Eur. Phys. J.

    Universal Scaling of Wave Propagation Failure in Arrays of Coupled Nonlinear Cells

    We study the onset of the propagation failure of wave fronts in systems of coupled cells. We introduce a new method to analyze the scaling of the critical external field at which fronts cease to propagate, as a function of intercellular coupling. We find the universal scaling of the field throughout the range of couplings, and show that the field becomes exponentially small for large couplings. Our method is generic and applicable to a wide class of cellular dynamics in chemical, biological, and engineering systems.     Linguistic expert creation in online health practices

    In this chapter, we explore how the construction of an expert identity varies across online e-health settings with different socio-technological features. Our methodology is qualitative in nature and draws on insights from discourse analysis, in particular positioning theory. Results show that four aspects of creating expertise are vital: the embeddedness of the posi-tioning strategies in the online health context, the interplay between these strategies within each setting, the interactivity of the medium, and the fact that not only professionals, but also clients and laypeople construct their expertise. The results reveal that previously found strategies to create expertise (e.g., using jargon or showing empathy) could be confirmed in our corpus, and that the interplay of several strategies is in fact needed to create credible and trustworthy expert identities for all participants involved. This interplay varies accord-ing to the practice

    If only they knew! A non‐inferiority randomized controlled trial comparing deceptive and open‐label placebo in healthy individuals

    BackgroundPlacebo use is widespread in clinical practice. However, they are most often administered deceptively rather than openly. It is often suggested that open‐label placebos (OLP) are less effective than deceptive placebos (DP). This study aimed to compare the use of DP and OLP treatments to reduce pain in healthy volunteers.MethodsWe conducted a non‐inferiority, parallel, randomized, controlled trial, which also included a nested cross‐over no‐treatment condition. This study was conducted at a university clinic in France.ResultsWe included 60 subjects and the main result shows that the OLP was not inferior to the DP by a margin of 10 mm. The mean difference between both groups regarding intensity of pain was 0.7 mm with a 95% compatibility interval (95% CI) of ]−∞; 5.4], and 97.5% CI of ]−∞; 6.3]. Secondary outcomes require cautious interpretation of the effect of placebo versus no treatment due to a time–treatment interaction.ConclusionThe study indicates that OLP may perform just as well as DP and could provide support for the use of OLP as an ethical alternative to DP when they are to be used in a clinical setting. If only patients knew about the placebo nature of some treatments they are receiving, unnecessary lies could be avoided while maintaining similar placebo effects.SignificanceThis study is the first to show non‐inferiority of placebos administered honestly, also called OLP, compared to DP in reducing pain. This suggests that OLP could be as effective as their deceptive counterparts while having the ethical advantage of not being required to lie. If deception is not a necessary condition for efficacy, OLP should be preferred over DP

    Numerical evidence for the spin-Peierls state in the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet

    We study the spin-121\over2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an antiferromagnetic J3J_3 (third nearest neighbor) interaction on a square lattice. We numerically diagonalize this ``J1J_1-J3J_3'' model on clusters up to 32-sites and search for novel ground state properties as the frustration parameter J3/J1J_3/J_1 changes. For ``larger'' J3/J1J_3/J_1 we find enhancement of incommensurate spin order, in agreement with spin-wave, large-NN expansions, and other predictions. But for intermediate J3/J1J_3/J_1, the low lying excitation energy spectrum suggests that this incommensurate order is short-range. In the same region, the first excited state has the symmetries of the columnar dimer (spin-Peierls) state. The columnar dimer order parameter suggests the presence of long-range columnar dimer order. Hence, this spin-Peierls state is the best candidate for the ground state of the J1J_1-J3J_3 model in an intermediate J3/J1J_3/J_1 region.Comment: RevTeX file with five postscript figures uuencode

    The detailed mechanism of the eta production in pp scattering up to the Tlab = 4.5 GeV

    Contrary to very early beliefs, the experimental cross section data for the eta production in proton-proton scattering are well described if pi and only eta meson exchange diagrams are used to calculate the Born term. The inclusion of initial and final state interactions is done in the factorization approximation by using the inverse square of the Jost function. The two body Jost functions are obtained from the S matrices in the low energy effective range approximation. The danger of double counting in the p-eta final state interaction is discussed. It is shown that higher partial waves in meson-nucleon amplitudes do not contribute significantly bellow excess energy of Q=100 MeV.     Studying Kaon-pion S-wave scattering in K-matrix formalism

    We generalize our previous work on \pi\pi scattering to K\pi scattering, and re-analyze the experiment data of K\pi scattering below 1.6 GeV. Without any free parameter, we explain K\pi I=3/2 S-wave phase shift very well by using t-channel rho and u-channel K^* meson exchange. With the t-channel and u-channel meson exchange fixed as the background term, we fit the K\pi I=1/2 S-wave data of the LASS experiment quite well by introducing one or two s-channel resonances. It is found that there is only one s-channel resonance between K\pi threshold and 1.6 GeV, i.e., K_0^*(1430) with a mass around 1438~1486 MeV and a width about 346 MeV, while the t-channel rho exchange gives a pole at (450-480i) MeV for the amplitude.Comment: REVTeX4 file, 11 pages and 3 figure

    Spin wave analysis to the spatially-anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on triangular lattice

    We study the phase diagram at T=0 of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with spatially-anisotropic interactions. For values of the anisotropy very close to J_alpha/J_beta=0.50, conventional spin wave theory predicts that quantum fluctuations melt the classical structures, for S=1/2. For the regime J_beta<J_alpha, it is shown that the incommensurate spiral phases survive until J_beta/J_alpha=0.27, leaving a wide region where the ground state is disordered. The existence of such nonmagnetic states suggests the possibility of spin liquid behavior for intermediate values of the anisotropy.Comment: Revised version, 4 pages, Latex (twocolumn), 4 figures as eps files.     Absolute properties of the binary system BB Pegasi

    We present a ground based photometry of the low-temperature contact binary BB Peg. We collected all times of mid-eclipses available in literature and combined them with those obtained in this study. Analyses of the data indicate a period increase of 3.0(1) x 10^{-8} days/yr. This period increase of BB Peg can be interpreted in terms of the mass transfer 2.4 x 10^{-8} Ms yr^{-1} from the less massive to the more massive component. The physical parameters have been determined as Mc = 1.42 Ms, Mh = 0.53 Ms, Rc = 1.29 Rs, Rh = 0.83 Rs, Lc = 1.86 Ls, and Lh = 0.94 Ls through simultaneous solution of light and of the radial velocity curves. The orbital parameters of the third body, that orbits the contact system in an eccentric orbit, were obtained from the period variation analysis. The system is compared to the similar binaries in the Hertzsprung-Russell and Mass-Radius diagram.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for Astronomical Journa

    New data on OZI rule violation in bar{p}p annihilation at rest

    The results of a measurement of the ratio R = Y(phi pi+ pi-) / Y(omega pi+ pi-) for antiproton annihilation at rest in a gaseous and in a liquid hydrogen target are presented. It was found that the value of this ratio increases with the decreasing of the dipion mass, which demonstrates the difference in the phi and omega production mechanisms. An indication on the momentum transfer dependence of the apparent OZI rule violation for phi production from the 3S1 initial state was found.Comment: 11 pages, 3 PostScript figures, submitted to Physics Letter
