    The Economic Costs and Benefits of Dental Education: An Empirical Analysis

    The rising costs associated with obtaining a dental education have caused some to question the financial benefit of pursuing a dental degree. There is a concern that recent graduates may have difficulty finding professional opportunities that provide the income necessary to service their accumulated educational debt. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trends in educational costs to aid in making an accurate appraisal of the financial benefit of a dental education. Adjusted into constant dollar terms, data from a variety of sources were collected for economic variables such as tuition, fees, student indebtedness, and dentists’ earnings. These variables were then analyzed to determine the true costs and benefits of obtaining a dental education. The results showed that, over the course of the last decade, educational costs increased faster than the real net income of practicing dentists, which led to a decline in the return on investment in dental education. However, regardless of an applicant’s choice of public or private dental school, there continues to be a positive economic return on students’ commitment of both financial resources and time to receive a dental education

    Living with multiple myeloma: A focus group study of unmet needs and preferences for survivorship care

    Purpose: To describe the unmet informational, psychological, emotional, social, practical, and physical needs and preferences for posttreatment survivorship care of individuals living with multiple myeloma to inform the development of relevant, personcentered, survivorship services. Methods: An exploratory, descriptive study using 2 focus groups with 14 participants, 6 to 49 months postdiagnosis. Results: Thematic analysis revealed 7 key themes: information needs, experience with health-care professionals, coping with side effects, communicating with family and friends, dealing with emotions, support needs, and living with the chronicity of myeloma. Participants described key characteristics of survivorship care relevant to their needs and indicated they would like a more whole of person approach to follow-up when the main treatment phases had completed. Conclusion: Participants in this study described unmet needs across a breadth of domains that varied over time. The development of flexible, person-centered approaches to comprehensive survivorship care is needed to address the considerable quality-of-life issues experienced by people living with multiple myeloma. Nurse-led care may offer 1 viable model to deliver enhanced patient experience—providing the vital “link” that people described as missing from their survivorship care

    For systems exhibiting a second-order phase transition with a spontaneously broken continuous O(N)-symmetry at low temperature, we give a criterion for judging at which temperature T_K long-range directional fluctuations of the order field destroy the order when approaching the critical temperature from below.     Synthesis, characterization and DPPH scavenging activity of some benzimidazole derivatives

    A base-catalyzed conversion of aldehydes to benzimidazoles has been achieved. The compounds have been characterized by IR, NMR, micoranalysis, and GC-MS. The reaction for the formation of benzimidazoles has been monitored with 1H NMR and IR. The crystal structures of two derivatives, 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-1H-benzimidazole and 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-4-nitrophenol, are presented. A study of the DPPH scavenging activity of these compounds showed that 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)phenol (2), 2-p-tolyl-1H-benzimidazole (3) and 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole (7) gave IC50 values 1974, 773 and 800 µM.               KEY WORDS: Benzimidazole, o-Phenylenediamine, Aldehydes, Base catalysis, DPPH scavenging activity Bull.     Flux Pinning and Phase Transitions in Model High-Temperature Superconductors with Columnar Defects

    We calculate the degree of flux pinning by defects in model high-temperature superconductors (HTSC's). The HTSC is modeled as a three-dimensional network of resistively-shunted Josephson junctions in an external magnetic field, corresponding to a HTSC in the extreme Type-II limit. Disorder is introduced either by randomizing the coupling between grains (Model A disorder) or by removing grains (Model B disorder). Three types of defects are considered: point disorder, random line disorder, and periodic line disorder; but the emphasis is on random line disorder. Static and dynamic properties of the models are determined by Monte Carlo simulations and by solution of the analogous coupled overdamped Josephson equations in the presence of thermal noise. Random line defects considerably raise the superconducting transition temperature Tc(B)_c(B), and increase the apparent critical current density Jc(B,T)_c(B,T), in comparison to the defect-free crystal. They are more effective in these respects than a comparable volume density of point defects, in agreement with the experiments of Civale {\it et al}. Periodic line defects commensurate with the flux lattice are found to raise Tc(B)_c(B) even more than do random line defects. Random line defects are most effective when their density approximately equals the flux density. Near Tc(B)_c(B), our static and dynamic results appear consistent with the anisotropic Bose glass scaling hypotheses of Nelson and Vinokur, but with possibly different critical indices:Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX(REVTeX v3.0, twocolumn), 11 figures (not included

    Superflow in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate: an atom circuit with a tunable weak link

    We have created a long-lived (~ 40 s) persistent current in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate held in an all-optical trap. A repulsive optical barrier creates a tunable weak link in the condensate circuit, which can affect the current around the loop. Superflow stops abruptly at a barrier strength such that the local flow velocity exceeds a critical velocity. The measured critical velocity is consistent with dissipation due to the creation of vortex-antivortex pairs.     Phase transition in a chain of quantum vortices

    We consider interacting vortices in a quasi-one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions with small capacitance. If the charging energy of a junction is of the order of the Josephson energy, the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter in the system are considerable, and the vortices behave as quantum particles. Their density may be tuned by an external magnetic field, and therefore one can control the commensurability of the one-dimensional vortex lattice with the lattice of Josephson junctions. We show that the interplay between the quantum nature of a vortex, and the long-range interaction between the vortices leads to the existence of a specific commensurate-incommensurate transition in a one-dimensional vortex lattice. In the commensurate phase an elementary excitation is a soliton, with energy separated from the ground state by a finite gap. This gap vanishes in the incommensurate phase. Each soliton carries a fraction of a flux quantum; the propagation of solitons leads to a finite resistance of the array. We find the dependence of the resistance activation energy on the magnetic field and parameters of the Josephson array. This energy consists of the above-mentioned gap, and also of a boundary pinning term, which is different in the commensurate and incommensurate phases.     Dynamic Scaling of Magnetic Flux Noise Near the KTB Transition in Overdamped Josephson Junction Arrays

    We have used a dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device to measure the magnetic flux noise generated by the equilibrium vortex density fluctuations associated with the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii (KTB) transition in an overdamped Josephson junction array. At temperatures slightly above the KTB transition temperature, the noise is white for f<fξf<f_\xi and scales as 1/f1/f for f>fξf>f_\xi. Here fξξzf_\xi\propto\xi^{-z}, where ξ\xi is the correlation length and zz is the dynamic exponent. Moreover, when all frequencies are scaled by fξf_\xi, data for different temperatures and frequencies collapse on to a single curve. In addition, we have extracted the dynamic exponent zz and found z=1.98±0.03z=1.98\pm0.03.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX (REVTeX) format, requires epsfig and amstex style files. 3 figures included.
