    Space propulsion systems. Present performance limits and application and development trends

    Typical spaceflight programs and their propulsion requirements as a comparison for possible propulsion systems are summarized. Chemical propulsion systems, solar, nuclear, or even laser propelled rockets with electrical or direct thermal fuel acceleration, nonrockets with air breathing devices and solar cells are considered. The chemical launch vehicles have similar technical characteristics and transportation costs. A possible improvement of payload by using air breathing lower stages is discussed. The electrical energy supply installations which give performance limits of electrical propulsion and the electrostatic ion propulsion systems are described. The development possibilities of thermal, magnetic, and electrostatic rocket engines and the state of development of the nuclear thermal rocket and propulsion concepts are addressed

    Effect of tomato variety, cultivation, climate and processing on Sola l 4, an allergen from Solanum lycopersicum

    Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) are one of the most consumed vegetables worldwide. However, tomato allergies in patients suffering from birch pollen allergy occur frequently. Due to highly similar protein structures of the tomato allergen Sola l 4 and the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1, patients cross-react with allergenic proteins from tomato as well as other fruits or vegetables. The aim of this study was to quantify Sola l 4 in various tomatoes differing in color, size and shape for identification of varieties with a reduced allergen level. Therefore, an indirect competitive ELISA using a specific polyclonal Sola l 4 antibody was developed. In addition, two varieties, both cultivated either conventionally or organically and furthermore dried with different methods, were analyzed to investigate the influence of the cultivation method and processing techniques on Sola l 4 level. Within 23 varieties, Sola l 4 content varied significantly between 0.24 and 1.71 μg Sola l 4/g FW. The tomato cultivars Rugantino and Rhianna showed the significantly lowest level, whereas in cultivars Farbini and Bambello the significantly highest concentration was determined. Drying of tomatoes in the oven and by sun resulted in a significant decrease. The thermal instability was verified for the recombinant Sola l 4 emphasizing the results for the native protein in dried tomato samples. Overall, the Sola l 4 content is cultivar-dependent and no correlation between color and Sola l 4 amount was found. During the drying process of tomatoes Sola l 4 level was significantly reduced due to thermal instability. Growing conditions have a minor effect whereas seasonal effects show a more pronounced impact. These findings could extend the knowledge about the allergen level of different tomato varieties and may help to improve food safety to potentially increase the life quality of patients suffering from birch pollen allergy

    Hidden entanglement in the presence of random telegraph dephasing noise

    Entanglement dynamics of two noninteracting qubits, locally affected by random telegraph noise at pure dephasing, exhibits revivals. These revivals are not due to the action of any nonlocal operation, thus their occurrence may appear paradoxical since entanglement is by definition a nonlocal resource. We show that a simple explanation of this phenomenon may be provided by using the (recently introduced) concept of "hidden" entanglement, which signals the presence of entanglement that may be recovered with the only help of local operations.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physica Scripta on September 17th 201

    Effect of the Strawberry Genotype, Cultivation and Processing on the Fra a 1 Allergen Content

    Birch pollen allergic patients show cross-reactivity to vegetables and fruits, including strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). The objective of this study was to quantify the level of the Fra a 1 protein, a Bet v 1-homologous protein in strawberry fruits by a newly developed ELISA, and determine the effect of genotype, cultivation and food processing on the allergen amount. An indirect competitive ELISA using a specific polyclonal anti-Fra a 1.02 antibody was established and revealed high variability in Fra a 1 levels within 20 different genotypes ranging from 0.67 to 3.97 μg/g fresh weight. Mature fruits of red-, white- and yellow-fruited strawberry cultivars showed similar Fra a 1 concentrations. Compared to fresh strawberries, oven and solar-dried fruits contained slightly lower levels due to thermal treatment during processing. SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis demonstrated degradation of recombinant Fra a 1.02 after prolonged (>10 min) thermal treatment at 99 ◦ C. In conclusion, the genotype strongly determined the Fra a 1 quantity in strawberries and the color of the mature fruits does not relate to the amount of the PR10-protein. Cultivation conditions (organic and conventional farming) do not affect the Fra a 1 level, and seasonal effects were minor

    It is known that entanglement dynamics of two noninteracting qubits, locally subjected to classical environments, may exhibit revivals. A simple explanation of this phenomenon may be provided by using the concept of hidden entanglement, which signals the presence of entanglement that may be recovered without the help of nonlocal operations.     Strategy updating rules and strategy distributions in dynamical multiagent systems

    In the evolutionary version of the minority game, agents update their strategies (gene-value pp) in order to improve their performance. Motivated by recent intriguing results obtained for prize-to-fine ratios which are smaller than unity, we explore the system's dynamics with a strategy updating rule of the form p→p±δpp \to p \pm \delta p (0≤p≤10 \leq p \leq 1). We find that the strategy distribution depends strongly on the values of the prize-to-fine ratio RR, the length scale δp\delta p, and the type of boundary condition used. We show that these parameters determine the amplitude and frequency of the the temporal oscillations observed in the gene space. These regular oscillations are shown to be the main factor which determines the strategy distribution of the population. In addition, we find that agents characterized by p=12p={1 \over 2} (a coin-tossing strategy) have the best chances of survival at asymptotically long times, regardless of the value of δp\delta p and the boundary conditions used.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    Entanglement degradation in the solid state: interplay of adiabatic and quantum noise

    We study entanglement degradation of two non-interacting qubits subject to independent baths with broadband spectra typical of solid state nanodevices. We obtain the analytic form of the concurrence in the presence of adiabatic noise for classes of entangled initial states presently achievable in experiments. We find that adiabatic (low frequency) noise affects entanglement reduction analogously to pure dephasing noise. Due to quantum (high frequency) noise, entanglement is totally lost in a state-dependent finite time.     Optimal positioning of irregular shapes in stamping die strip

    The nesting of two-dimensional shapes is a common problem, where raw material has to be economically cut. As for the single-pass single-row strip layout, several algorithms, based on established methods, have been proposed. Moreover, it should be noticed that the optimum layout should also consider a few constraints, like grain orientation for subsequent forming operation, correct bridge width, and the commercial roll of metal width in order to make solutions applicable in real industrial environments. Most of the procedures until now shown in literature are quite complex and often ignore these real constraints. They usually make use of sliding techniques and are not able to effectively work with relatively multiple-connected figures. In particular, most of the different proposed procedures are based on the No Fit Polygon (NFP) computation of non-convex polygons, which often generates holes. This work is a proposal for a more efficient method, which can be used in heuristic procedures. In order to overcome some faults of most of the former methods presented in literature, in this paper a new geometric entity called \u201cNo Fit Path\u201d (NFPh) of non-convex polygons is applied. It allows researchers to find solutions of nesting problems even when there are NFP faults due to degenerate solutions. Moreover, the No Fit Path allows researchers to easily read, modify, or share their results, overcoming all those problems arising from the usual large amount of information and from the different origins and formats of the obtained data. Given two non-convex polygons, the algorithm is able to calculate their NFPh very quickly and without any approximation by a polygon clipping method. In this paper a totally automated procedure has been developed. This procedure firstly obtains the \u201cNo Fit Path\u201d (NFPh); secondly, between all the existing positions on the NFPh, the algorithm searches the optimal one, minimizing the global waste. The proposed approach also allows designers to set an optimal orientation of the shapes on the roll of metal, taking account of the grain orientation in order to obtain the best mechanical characteristics for the cut pieces

    Revival of quantum correlations without system-environment back-action

    Revivals of quantum correlations have often been explained in terms of back-action on quantum systems by their quantum environment(s). Here we consider a system of two independently evolving qubits, each locally interacting with a classical random external field. The environments of the qubits are also independent, and there is no back-action on the qubits. Nevertheless, entanglement, quantum discord and classical correlations between the two qubits may revive in this model. We explain the revivals in terms of correlations in a classical-quantum state of the environments and the qubits. Although classical states cannot store entanglement on their own, they can play a role in storing and reviving entanglement. It is important to know how the absence of back-action, or modelling an environment as classical, affects the kind of system time evolutions one is able to describe. We find a class of global time evolutions where back-action is absent and for which there is no loss of generality in modelling the environment as classical. Finally, we show that the revivals can be connected with the increase of a parameter used to quantify non-Markovianity of the single-qubit dynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; this version to appear in Phys.
