"It isn't just consultants that need a BSc": student experiences of an Intercalated BSc

More medical schools are moving towards a compulsory intercalated BSc. These courses have not traditionally been aimed at those students interested in general practice and have tended to have limited clinical relevance. This paper explores the perceptions of students who undertook a BSc in primary health care using qualitative methodology comprising semi-structured interviews with students just before completion of their course. Interviews were undertaken with 24 of the 26 students who started the course over a 4-year period. All the students have finished the course and have graduated with good honours degrees. Students refine existing skills and develop new, relevant skills for medicine. The students discussed the prestige (or lack) of a BSc in this field and how the course has impacted on their career decisions. A Primary Health Care BSc such as this appears to give students an in depth and to some, a positive view of general practice and primary care. The course allowed students to develop a more critical approach to medicine and enabled them to develop skills in addition to those acquired from their undergraduate medicine course. They perceived that these skills will serve them throughout their career in whatever branch of medicine they choose

A study of the kinematics and binary-induced shaping of the planetary nebula HaTr 4

We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of the planetary nebula HaTr 4, one of few known to contain a post-common-envelope central star system. Common envelope evolution is believed to play an important role in the shaping of planetary nebulae, but the exact nature of this role is yet to be understood. High spatial- and spectral- resolution spectroscopy of the [OIII]5007 nebular line obtained with VLT-UVES are presented alongside deep narrowband Ha+[NII]6584 imagery obtained using EMMI-NTT, and together the two are used to derive the three-dimensional morphology of HaTr 4. The nebula is found to display an extended ovoid morphology with an enhanced equatorial region consistent with a toroidal waist - a feature believed to be typical amongst planetary nebulae with post-common-envelope central stars. The nebular symmetry axis is found to lie perpendicular to the orbital plane of the central binary, concordant with the idea that the formation and evolution of HaTr 4 has been strongly influenced by its central binary.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Studies on color in swine

In 1913 an investigation was started at the Iowa experiment station in \u27 the laboratories of the animal husbandry section, which aimed toward aiding in a genetic analysis of the belt pattern in Hampshire swine. The crosses, which have already involved many hundreds of pigs, have dealt entirely with the Duroc-Jersey and the Hampshire breeds. The breed standard describes the Hampshires as black with the exception of a white belt encircling the body, including the fore legs, while the Duroc-Jersey is described as being cherry red without other admixtures. The white belt of the Hampshire is far from being a fixed character, however, and many pigs continue to come with only partial or imperfect belts, or even with no white whatever. This is true in spite of rigid selection for belts by the breeders. Our work with this belt pattern has shown it to be complex in genetic make-up and no report can be made on its hereditary behavior at this time. The purpose of this paper is to touch briefly upon certain phases of color inheritance in swine as already recorded in various published accounts, and to report in greater detail some new data on the relationship between black and red swine

Inheritance of color and horns in blue-gray cattle

In 1902 there were undertaken at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station some investigations of the merits of blue-gray cross··bred cattle as feeding and market animals. The blue-gray color is caused by an intimate intermingling of black and white hairs on the body, a condition seen in cattle, horses and (rarely) in swine, and referred to by stock breeders as blue·roan. The blue-gray color is not typical for any recognized breed of cattle and is most commonly produced by crossing a white Shorthorn bull on cows of the black Scotch breeds, namely the Aberdeen Angus or the Galloway-usually the latter

The informal housing development process in Nigeria: the case of Kaduna

Housing developments in informal areas usually occur in the emerging parts of a Nigerian city, on the periphery. Land in customary tenure/ownership is being sold on the ‘free’ market and turned into ‘informal’ layouts without the official recognition of or approval by government. This report is based on research carried out in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna over a number of years. Kaduna, together with Kano, the two wealthiest and largest cities in the North West Zone of Nigeria, despite the current economic and political problems , are still expanding rapidly though natural growth combined with in-migration. The evidence is that informal housing development on the urban periphery in both cities is increasing at a stupendous rate and this is where most new households in these cities are being housed. Informal housing currently meets around 90% of Nigeria's housing demand. The report argues in favour of new forms of, and attitudes to urban governance that work with the and manage the informal housing supply system rather than against it

Specializing Interpreters using Offline Partial Deduction

We present the latest version of the Logen partial evaluation system for logic programs. In particular we present new binding-types, and show how they can be used to effectively specialise a wide variety of interpreters.We show how to achieve Jones-optimality in a systematic way for several interpreters. Finally, we present and specialise a non-trivial interpreter for a small functional programming language. Experimental results are also presented, highlighting that the Logen system can be a good basis for generating compilers for high-level languages

Coronary heart disease risks associated with high levels of HDL cholesterol.

BackgroundThe association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and coronary heart disease (CHD) events is not well described in individuals with very high levels of HDL-C (>80 mg/dL).Methods and resultsUsing pooled data from 6 community-based cohorts we examined CHD and total mortality risks across a broad range of HDL-C, including values in excess of 80 mg/dL. We used Cox proportional hazards models with penalized splines to assess multivariable, adjusted, sex-stratified associations of HDL-C with the hazard for CHD events and total mortality, using HDL-C 45 mg/dL and 55 mg/dL as the referent in men and women, respectively. Analyses included 11 515 men and 12 925 women yielding 307 245 person-years of follow-up. In men, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across most HDL-C values; however at HDL-C values >90 mg/dL there was a plateau effect in the pattern of association. In women, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across lower values of HDL-C, however at HDL-C values >75 mg/dL there were no further reductions in the hazard ratio point estimates for CHD. In unadjusted models there were increased total mortality risks in men with very high HDL-C, however mortality risks observed in participants with very high HDL-C were attenuated after adjustment for traditional risk factors.ConclusionsWe did not observe further reductions in CHD risk with HDL-C values higher than 90 mg/dL in men and 75 mg/dL in women

Extraction of Small Boat Harmonic Signatures from Passive Sonar

This paper investigates the extraction of acoustic signatures from small boats using a passive sonar system. Noise radiated from a small boats consists of broadband noise and harmonically related tones that correspond to engine and propeller specifications. A signal processing method to automatically extract the harmonic structure of noise radiated from small boats is developed. The Harmonic Extraction and Analysis Tool (HEAT) estimates the instantaneous fundamental frequency of the harmonic tones, refines the fundamental frequency estimate using a Kalman filter, and automatically extracts the amplitudes of the harmonic tonals to generate a harmonic signature for the boat. Results are presented that show the HEAT algorithms ability to extract these signatures
