Evaluation of aerosolized medications during parabolic flight maneuvers
The goal was to visually evaluate the effect gravity has on delivery of medications by the use of various aerosol devices. During parabolic flight the same four aerosols were retested as performed in studio ground tests. It appears that the Cetacaine spray and the Ventolin inhaler function without failure during all test. The pump spray (Nostril) appeared to function normally when the container was full, however it appeared to begin to fail to deliver a full mist with larger droplet size when the container was nearly empty. The simple hand spray bottle appeared to work when the container was full and performed progressively worse as the container was emptied. During Apollo flights, it was reported that standard spray bottles did not work well, however, they did not indicate why. It appears that we would also conclude that standard spray bottles do not function as well in zero gravity by failing to produce a normal mist spray. The standard spray bottle allowed the fluid to come out in a narrow fluid stream when held with the nozzle either level or slightly tilted upward
Feeding of Bearded Seals in the Bering and Chukchi Seas and Trophic Interaction with Pacific Walruses
Current and historical information about food habits of bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus, are presented. Shrimps, crabs, and clams are overall the most important prey. Proportions of different prey in the diet vary with age of seals, location, and time of year. Foods of male and female seals are similar. Young seals eat proportionally more shrimps than do older animals. Recently, clams were important in the diet only in Norton Sound and near Wainwright, and only during late spring and summer. Greatest quantities of food were found in stomachs of seals which had eaten mostly clams. In Bering Strait, seals taken in spring 1958 and 1967 had consumed large quantities of clams, but this item was only a minor fraction of foods in 1975-79. Walruses, Odobenus rosmarus, have increased steadily in numbers since 1960. Whereas Bering Strait was mainly a route through which walruses migrated in spring and autumn, this region is now an area in which large numbers (up to 80,000) spend portions of the summer and autumn. The walruses feed mainly on clams. Increased foraging activity of walruses may have reduced availability of this food item for bearded seals. The walrus population currently appears to be exhibiting indications of stress. These indications may be a reflection of walrus numbers at or in excess of the ability of the clam resource to withstand current predation by walruses. Indices of population condition in bearded seals have remained stable, perhaps due to their more euryphagous habits
P and K Fertilizers for Corn - How to Apply
More Iowa corn acres could be fertilized profitably with phosphorus and potassium. Both hill (row) and broadcast application have their place. Here\u27s what research tells us about methods of application
Coronary heart disease risks associated with high levels of HDL cholesterol.
BackgroundThe association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and coronary heart disease (CHD) events is not well described in individuals with very high levels of HDL-C (>80 mg/dL).Methods and resultsUsing pooled data from 6 community-based cohorts we examined CHD and total mortality risks across a broad range of HDL-C, including values in excess of 80 mg/dL. We used Cox proportional hazards models with penalized splines to assess multivariable, adjusted, sex-stratified associations of HDL-C with the hazard for CHD events and total mortality, using HDL-C 45 mg/dL and 55 mg/dL as the referent in men and women, respectively. Analyses included 11 515 men and 12 925 women yielding 307 245 person-years of follow-up. In men, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across most HDL-C values; however at HDL-C values >90 mg/dL there was a plateau effect in the pattern of association. In women, the association between HDL-C and CHD events was inverse and linear across lower values of HDL-C, however at HDL-C values >75 mg/dL there were no further reductions in the hazard ratio point estimates for CHD. In unadjusted models there were increased total mortality risks in men with very high HDL-C, however mortality risks observed in participants with very high HDL-C were attenuated after adjustment for traditional risk factors.ConclusionsWe did not observe further reductions in CHD risk with HDL-C values higher than 90 mg/dL in men and 75 mg/dL in women
Contrasting Multicast Algorithms and XML with Afer
In recent years, much research has been devoted to the simulation of compilers; nevertheless, few have investigated the exploration of web browsers. Given the trends in distributed theory, futurists dubiously note the key unification of RPCs and spreadsheets, which embodies the technical principles of steganography. We confirm that although Web services and semaphores can collaborate to realize this ambition, suffix trees can be made distributed, wireless, and mobile
Patient Perspectives on Medication Assisted Therapy in Vermont
Introduction. Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) for opioid addiction has dramatically increased in Vermont, supported by a novel statewide system that integrates specialty treatment centers ( Hubs ) with primary care office-based opioid therapy ( Spokes ). In 2010, Vermont had the highest per capita buprenorphine use in the US. Previous studies of patient perspectives of MAT have identified social barriers, rigid program rules, and concerns about withdrawal and relapse as common causes of treatment failure. Our goal was to elicit patient perspectives on barriers and enablers of successful MAT to further inform system refinement.
Methods. An interview guide was developed based on previous literature as well as discussions with program leadership, staff and clinicians, and community stakeholders. Responses were organized using thematic content analysis with consensus across seven interviewers and two analysts. The interviews were conducted with 44 patients enrolled in MAT at two Hub sites in Burlington, VT in October 2016.
Results. The median age of subjects was 34 years, 34% were employed at least part-time, and 72% were female. Half reported a mental health condition and 20% reported chronic pain. Barriers included transportation (25%), lack of stable housing, and stigma (41%). Enablers included feeling supported (82% felt well-supported; 52% felt supported by healthcare professionals). Subjects expressed high confidence in the treatment system and high self-efficacy for sobriety.
Conclusions. Patients in MAT have complex medical, mental health, social, personal, and work lives. A comprehensive system that addresses this wide range of domains is critical to achieving optimal outcomes.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1245/thumbnail.jp
A Sr-Rich Star on the Main Sequence of Omega Centauri
Abundance ratios relative to iron for carbon, nitrogen, strontium and barium
are presented for a metal-rich main sequence star ([Fe/H]=--0.74) in the
globular cluster omega Centauri. This star, designated 2015448, shows depleted
carbon and solar nitrogen, but more interestingly, shows an enhanced abundance
ratio of strontium [Sr/Fe] ~ 1.6 dex, while the barium abundance ratio is
[Ba/Fe]<0.6 dex. At this metallicity one usually sees strontium and barium
abundance ratios that are roughly equal. Possible formation scenarios of this
peculiar object are considered.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Accepted to ApJ
Long Wave Ultrasonic Characterization of Inclusions in Silicon Nitride
The size and material content of Fe and Si inclusions in Si3N4 have been measured by means of pulse-echo scattering of elastic waves in the frequency range 5 to 100 MHz. The inclusions were of 100 μm and 400 μm nominal diameters and were located 3 mm deep in the Si3N4. The electronic noise was reduced by signal averaging and, in some cases, the noise due to grain scattering was reduced by averaging over transducer position. The scattering amplitude A(ω) and the impulse function R(t) were obtained by a desensitized deconvolution of the reference waveform obtained by reflecting the transmitted pulse from the back surface of the sample in a defect-free region. Comparison of theory and experiment are given for A(ω) and estimates of flaw size and material content are presented
