Subcutaneous Metastatic Adenocarcinoma: An Unusual Presentation of Colon Cancer – Case Report and Literature Review
Subcutaneous metastasis from a visceral malignancy is rare with an incidence of 5.3%. Skin involvement as the presenting sign of a silent internal malignancy is an even rarer event occurring in approximately 0.8%. We report a case of a patient who presented to her dermatologist complaining of rapidly developing subcutaneous nodules which subsequently proved to be metastatic colon cancer, and we provide a review of the literature
Intraoperative electron radiation therapy as an important treatment modality in retroperitoneal sarcoma
Local recurrence (LR) rates in patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) are high, ranging from 40% to 80%, with no definitive studies describing the best way to administer radiation. Intraoperative electron beam radiation therapy (IOERT) provides a theoretical advantage for access to the tumor bed with reduced toxicity to surrounding structures. The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of IOERT in high-risk patients
Idiopathic Senile Gait: Are They Fast Enough to Cross the Street?
Purpose: To determine whether the average, healthy, elderly person can cross a simulated street within the time allowed by crosswalk timers in the Metro-Dade and Broward county area.
Subjects: 22 Independent Living elderly residents of Epworth Village Retirement Community in Hialeah, Florida.
Methodology: Survey instrument used to screen pathology which adversely affect gait. Subjects completed four gait trials to determine preferred and fast gait speed on an indoor 6.6 m walkway and an outdoor simulated 6.6 m street.
Results: At preferred walking speeds, 0% of subjects were able to cross the simulated street within the time constraints of a downtown crosswalk timer, 13.6% within the time constraints of an average crosswalk timer, and 72.7% within the time constraints of a residential crosswalk timer.
Conclusion: The average, healthy, elderly person is unable to safely cross a street within the time constraints of Metro-Dade and Broward County area crosswalk timers
Increased complications associated with feeding jejunostomy in gastrectomy for gastric cancer: Chicken or the egg?
Heterotopic mesenteric ossification following gastric bypass surgery: case series and review of literature.
Heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) is a rare entity with few cases reported in the world literature. We report two cases. Both patients underwent an open gastric bypass with Roux-en-Y reconstruction procedure for morbid obesity and subsequently presented with gastrointestinal fistulae associated with HMO
