Associations between dietary added sugar intake and micronutrient intake: a systematic review

DOI: 10.1017/S0007114507617206There is increasing concern that high intakes of added sugars might compromise intakes of micronutrients. The objectives of this systematic review were (1) to determine whether dietary added sugar intake was associated with micronutrient intakes, and if so, whether there was evidence of micronutrient dilution as a result of higher dietary added sugar intake and (2) if micronutrient dilution was present, to determine whether there was sufficiently robust evidence to support a threshold effect above which there was a significant decline in micronutrient intake or status relative to the recommended intakes. A systematic computerised literature search was undertaken, limited to studies written in English published from 1980 onwards and further studies identified through hand searching papers. Fifteen studies that assessed associations between intakes of added sugars or non-milk extrinsic sugars and micronutrients were included. Overall, there are insufficient data and inconsistency between studies in relationships between added sugars and micronutrient intakes, with no clear evidence of micronutrient dilution or a threshold for a quantitative amount of added sugar intake for any of the micronutrients investigated. The current evidence base is considerably constrained by methodological issues. Further research is required to determine which food products high in added sugars might adversely affect micronutrient intakes by displacing other food items from the diet. Analyses should take into account the magnitude of any observed associations to determine their true biological significance.Peer reviewe
Fast iterative solvers for geomechanics in a commercial FE code
There is a pressing need to improve the feasibility of three-dimensional finite element (FE) methods applied to many problems in civil engineering. This is particularly the case for static analyses in geotechnical engineering: ideally, models would be 3D, follow the actual geometry, use non-linear material formulations and allow simulation of construction sequences, and all of this with a reasonable degree of accuracy. One major obstacle to improvements in this regard is the difficulty in solving of the set of (linearised) algebraic equations which arises from a typical discretisation approach. Very large systems become cumbersome for direct techniques to solve economically. This paper describes the incorporation of iterative (rather than direct) solution techniques, developed through University research, into commercial FE software for geotechnics
Metal chelates as anti-cancer agents. II cytotoxic action of palladium and platinum complexes of 6-mercaptopurine and thioguanine.
The metal complexes Pd(MP)2.2H2O, Pt(MP)2H2O (MPH=6-mercaptopurine), Pt(AMP2.3H2O and Pd3(AMP)4Cl2(AMPH).4H2O (AMPH=thioguanine) have been isolated. They were screened for anti-tumour activity in the L-1210 lymphoid leukaemia test system in mice. All 4 show marked anti-tumour activity, the complex Pt(AMP)2.3H2O giving a T/C of 185 at the optimum dosage. However, the anti-tumour activity of the metal complexes is somewhat less than that shown by the parent purines under the same conditions
Magnetar-like Emission from the Young Pulsar in Kes 75
We report detection of magnetar-like X-ray bursts from the young pulsar PSR
J1846-0258, at the center of the supernova remnant Kes 75. This pulsar, long
thought to be rotation-powered, has an inferred surface dipolar magnetic field
of 4.9x10^13 G, higher than those of the vast majority of rotation-powered
pulsars, but lower than those of the ~12 previously identified magnetars. The
bursts were accompanied by a sudden flux increase and an unprecedented change
in timing behavior. These phenomena lower the magnetic and rotational
thresholds associated with magnetar-like behavior, and suggest that in neutron
stars there exists a continuum of magnetic activity that increases with

Prediction of melt depth in selected architectural materials during high power diode laser treatment
The development of an accurate analysis procedure for many laser applications, including the surface treatment of architectural materials, is extremely complicated due to the multitude of process parameters and materials characteristics involved. A one-dimensional analytical model based on Fourierās law, with quasi-stationary situations in an isotropic and inhomogeneous workpiece with a parabolic meltpool geometry being assumed, was successfully developed. This model, with the inclusion of an empirically determined correction factor, predicted high power diode laser (HPDL) induced melt depths in clay quarry tiles, ceramic tiles and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) that were in close agreement with those obtained experimentally. It was observed, however, that as the incident laser line energy increased (>15 W mm-1 s-1/2), the calculated and the experimental melt depths began to diverge at an increasing rate. It is believed that this observed increasing discrepancy can be attributed to the fact the model developed neglects sideways conduction which, although it can be reasonably neglected at low energy densities, becomes significant at higher energy densities since one-dimensional heat transfer no longer holds true
Following the excited state relaxation dynamics of indole and 5-hydroxyindole using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy
Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was used to obtain new information about the dynamics of electronic relaxation in gas-phase indole and 5-hydroxyindole following UV excitation with femtosecond laser pulses centred at 249 nm and 273 nm. Our analysis of the data was supported by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster and complete-active-space self-consistent-field levels. The optically bright 1La and 1Lb electronic states of 1\u3c0\u3c0* character and spectroscopically dark and dissociative 1\u3c0\u3c3* states were all found to play a role in the overall relaxation process. In both molecules we conclude that the initially excited 1La state decays non-adiabatically on a sub 100 fs timescale via two competing pathways, populating either the subsequently long-lived 1Lb state or the 1\u3c0\u3c3* state localised along the N-H coordinate, which exhibits a lifetime on the order of 1 ps. In the case of 5-hydroxyindole, we conclude that the 1\u3c0\u3c3* state localised along the O-H coordinate plays little or no role in the relaxation dynamics at the two excitation wavelengths studied.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye
A Survey of 56 Mid-latitude EGRET Error Boxes for Radio Pulsars
We have conducted a radio pulsar survey of 56 unidentified gamma-ray sources
from the 3rd EGRET catalog which are at intermediate Galactic latitudes (5 deg.
< |b| < 73 deg.). For each source, four interleaved 35-minute pointings were
made with the 13-beam, 1400-MHz multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64-m radio
telescope. This covered the 95% error box of each source at a limiting
sensitivity of about 0.2 mJy to pulsed radio emission for periods P > 10 ms and
dispersion measures < 50 pc cm-3. Roughly half of the unidentified gamma-ray
sources at |b| > 5 deg. with no proposed active galactic nucleus counterpart
were covered in this survey. We detected nine isolated pulsars and four
recycled binary pulsars, with three from each class being new. Timing
observations suggest that only one of the pulsars has a spin-down luminosity
which is even marginally consistent with the inferred luminosity of its
coincident EGRET source. Our results suggest that population models, which
include the Gould belt as a component, overestimate the number of isolated
pulsars among the mid-latitude Galactic gamma-ray sources and that it is
unlikely that Gould belt pulsars make up the majority of these sources.
However, the possibility of steep pulsar radio spectra and the confusion of
terrestrial radio interference with long-period pulsars (P > 200 ms) having
very low dispersion measures (< 10 pc cm-3, expected for sources at a distance
of less than about 1 kpc) prevent us from strongly ruling out this hypothesis.
Our results also do not support the hypothesis that millisecond pulsars make up
the majority of these sources. Non-pulsar source classes should therefore be
further investigated as possible counterparts to the unidentified EGRET sources

Are Japanese and European gastric cancer the same biological entity? An immunohistochemical study.
To examine the suggested biological difference between Japanese and British gastric cancers, immunohistochemistry was used to demonstrate eight markers of biological activity in a matched series of 40 Japanese and 33 British cases. There were no differences in the proportions of Japanese and British tumours positive to epidermal growth factor, epidermal growth factor receptor, transforming growth factor alpha, cripto or p53. A significantly greater proportion of British tumours were positive to c-erbB-2 whilst a significantly greater proportion of Japanese tumours were positive to nm23. British tumours had a significantly greater mean proliferating cell nuclear antigen proliferation index than Japanese tumours. These differences could be clinically significant
