A Rhetorical Study of News Headlines Translation

News report has become an important source for people to obtain information, and as the ā€œeyeā€ of a piece of news, the title highly summarizes its theme, and expresses the attitude of the author. By analyzing the relevant literature, it is found that most of the current studies focus on the stylistic characteristics and translation principles of news translation. The studies on news headline translation are limited. Besides, the researches on the translation of news headlines mainly focus on the characteristics and specific translation methods. Few studies focus on rhetorical strategies of news headlines translation. Therefore, literature research and qualitative analysis will be adopted to study the translation of news headlines from the perspective of rhetoric. By selecting a certain amount of news headlines translation, to the paper explores the news headlines translation from the rhetoric appeals and a rhetorical model for guiding the translation of news headlines has been given. This study finds that the three rhetorical appeals have certain guiding significance for news headlines translation. In terms of ethos, the translator enhances the audienceā€™s sense of credibility in the news by stating the views of authoritative people or platforms, or quoting the words in authoritative works; in terms of pathos, the translator takes ā€œaudienceā€ as the center. Understanding the audience better and sharing common grounds with them is helpful to complete the persuasion to the audience; in terms of logos, the translator improves the language expressions and their internal logic so that the audience can be effectively persuaded. The rhetorical model put forward provides a new perspective for the translation of news headlines. In addition, this study expands the horizons of news translation research, and has certain reference significance for news translation practice

    Dancing with Diversity?

Rapid market transition in post-reform China has created various socioeconomic spaces that fall beyond the Leninist mode of control by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and thus constitutes a formidable challenge to its ruling capacity.  This article examines the evolving adaptations of the CCP and the rise of a new form of Party-society nexus in urban China. We found that Party organisers have been fostering a spatial strategy in the context of ā€˜disorganised urban socialismā€™. By spanning institutional and sectoral gaps, engaging so-called ā€˜floating party membersā€™, and developing community-based service networks, the Party has deliberately combined a specific social mechanism with the Leninist logic of organising. We conclude with a broader discussion of the possible scenario and political implication of CCPā€™s organisational consolidation from below

Gamified Live-streaming: Is Avatar Better than Human Being?

Live-streaming has emerged as a popular direct selling channel to foster synchronous interaction between streamers and consumers, with the avatar streamer largely underexplored. Using the data from a fashion retailer, we adopt the Generalized Synthetic Control (GSC) method to examine the effect of gamified and human live-streaming on product sales and return rate. We find that (1) the gamified live-streaming reduces product sales and the return rate simultaneously; (2) human live-streaming boosts product sales but increases the return rate, and (3) the dual-type live-streaming can increase product sales and decrease return rates. Furthermore, we proposed that the reason for the differentiated effects between gamified and human live-streaming could be driven by the impulse-buying behavior of viewers only in human live-streaming. Our findings contribute to the growing literature on the business value of AI technology and gamification in live-streaming and shed light on practical decisions made by online retailers

Nonlinear Adaptive Equivalent Control Based on Interconnection Subsystems for Air-Breathing Hypersonic Vehicles

For the nonminimum phase behavior of the air-breathing hypersonic vehicle model caused by elevator-to-lift coupling, a nonlinear adaptive equivalent control method based on interconnection subsystems is proposed. In the altitude loop, the backstepping strategy is applied, where the virtual control inputs about flight-path angle and attack angle are designed step by step. In order to avoid the inaccurately direct cancelation of elevator-to-lift coupling when aerodynamic parameters are uncertain, the real control inputs, that is, elevator deflection and canard deflection, are linearly converted into the equivalent control inputs which are designed independently. The reformulation of the altitude-flight-path angle dynamics and the attack angle-pitch rate dynamics is constructed into interconnection subsystems with input-to-state stability via small-gain theorem. For the velocity loop, the dynamic inversion controller is designed. The adaptive approach is used to identify the uncertain aerodynamic parameters. Simulation of the flexible hypersonic vehicle demonstrates effectiveness of the proposed method

Arrayed van der Waals Vertical Heterostructures based on 2D GaSe Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Vertically stacking two dimensional (2D) materials can enable the design of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices and realize complex functionality. However, the fabrication of such artificial heterostructures in wafer scale with an atomically-sharp interface poses an unprecedented challenge. Here, we demonstrate a convenient and controllable approach for the production of wafer-scale 2D GaSe thin films by molecular beam epitaxy. In-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction oscillations and Raman spectroscopy reveal a layer-by-layer van der Waals epitaxial growth mode. Highly-efficient photodetector arrays were fabricated based on few-layer GaSe on Si. These photodiodes show steady rectifying characteristics and a relatively high external quantum efficiency of 23.6%. The resultant photoresponse is super-fast and robust with a response time of 60 us. Importantly, the device shows no sign of degradation after 1 million cycles of operation. Our study establishes a new approach to produce controllable, robust and large-area 2D heterostructures and presents a crucial step for further practical applications
