Autonomous model protocell division driven by molecular replication
The coupling of compartmentalisation with molecular replication is thought to be crucial for the emergence of the first evolvable chemical systems. Minimal artificial replicators have been designed based on molecular recognition, inspired by the template copying of DNA, but none yet have been coupled to compartmentalisation. Here, we present an oil-in-water droplet system comprising an amphiphilic imine dissolved in chloroform that catalyses its own formation by bringing together a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic precursor, which leads to repeated droplet division. We demonstrate that the presence of the amphiphilic replicator, by lowering the interfacial tension between droplets of the reaction mixture and the aqueous phase, causes them to divide. Periodic sampling by a droplet-robot demonstrates that the extent of fission is increased as the reaction progresses, producing more compartments with increased self-replication. This bridges a divide, showing how replication at the molecular level can be used to drive macroscale droplet fission
Semantic levels of domain-independent commonsense knowledgebase for visual indexing and retrieval applications
Building intelligent tools for searching, indexing and retrieval applications is needed to congregate the rapidly increasing amount of visual data. This raised the need for building and maintaining ontologies and knowledgebases to support textual semantic representation of visual contents, which is an important block in these applications. This paper proposes a commonsense knowledgebase that forms the link between the visual world and its semantic textual representation. This domain-independent knowledge is provided at different levels of semantics by a fully automated engine that analyses, fuses and integrates previous commonsense knowledgebases. This knowledgebase satisfies the levels of semantic by adding two new levels: temporal event scenarios and psycholinguistic understanding. Statistical properties and an experiment evaluation, show coherency and effectiveness of the proposed knowledgebase in providing the knowledge needed for wide-domain visual applications

Quantum dot emission from site-controlled ngan/gan micropyramid arrays
InxGa1−xN quantum dots have been fabricated by the selective growth of GaN micropyramid arrays topped with InGaN/GaN quantum wells. The spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved emission properties of these structures were measured using cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging and low-temperature microphotoluminescence spectroscopy. The presence of InGaN quantum dots was confirmed directly by the observation of sharp peaks in the emission spectrum at the pyramid apices. These luminescence peaks exhibit decay lifetimes of approximately 0.5 ns, with linewidths down to 650 me

BES3 time of flight monitoring system
A Time of Flight monitoring system has been developed for BES3.
The light source is a 442-443 nm laser diode, which is stable and provides a
pulse width as narrow as 50 ps and a peak power as large as 2.6 W. Two
optical-fiber bundles with a total of 512 optical fibers, including spares, are
used to distribute the light pulses to the Time of Flight counters. The design,
operation, and performance of the system are described.Comment: 8 pages 16 figures, submitted to NI
Topological Phase Transition and Electrically Tunable Diamagnetism in Silicene
Silicene is a monolayer of silicon atoms forming a honeycomb lattice. The
lattice is actually made of two sublattices with a tiny separation. Silicene is
a topological insulator, which is characterized by a full insulating gap in the
bulk and helical gapless edges. It undergoes a phase transition from a
topological insulator to a band insulator by applying external electric field.
Analyzing the spin Chern number based on the effective Dirac theory, we find
their origin to be a pseudospin meron in the momentum space. The peudospin
degree of freedom arises from the two-sublattice structure. Our analysis makes
clear the mechanism how a phase transition occurs from a topological insulator
to a band insulator under increasing electric field. We propose a method to
determine the critical electric field with the aid of diamagnetism of silicene.
Diamagnetism is tunable by the external electric field, and exhibits a singular
behaviour at the critical electric field. Our result is important also from the
viewpoint of cross correlation between electric field and magnetism. Our
finding will be important for future electro-magnetic correlated devices.Comment: 4 pages,5 figure
Cultural differences in intimacy: The influence of gender-role ideology and individualism-collectivism
Two studies examined emotional intimacy in European Canadian and Chinese Canadian dating relationships. Cultural differences in gender-role ideology and individualism–collectivism
were hypothesized to differentially contribute to selfdisclosure and responsiveness, and in turn, intimacy. Study 1 revealed that Chinese Canadians’ lower intimacy relative to European Canadians was mediated by their greater gender-role traditionalism but not by their individualism or collectivism. Study 2 further linked greater gender-role traditionalism to
lower self-disclosure, and in turn, lower intimacy. Results also revealed that Chinese Canadians’ lower intimacy mediated their lower relationship satisfaction and higher rate of relationship termination in Study 1, but that Chinese Canadians were not any more likely to terminate their relationships in Study 2
A Technique for Tensile Fatigue and Creep Testing of Fiber-Reinforced Ceramics
An experimental technique for the elevated temperature tensile fatigue and creep testing of fiber-reinforced ceramics is discussed. The experimental approach utilizes edge-loaded specimens with rectangular gage-sections. Novel furnace and grip designs which allow testing in air to 1500°C are provided. The specimen, furnace and grip designs discussed in the paper have been successfully used to test unidirectional and cross-ply SiCf/Si3N 4, SiCf/SiC, Cf/SiC and SiCf/calcium-aluminosilicate composites.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66679/2/10.1177_002199839202600608.pd
