Understanding the factors affecting irrigation management performance is crucial for sustainable resource use, especially with the decentralized management mode of irrigation systems being implemented in rural China. This paper contributes to the research field by incorporating different categories of social trust and perceived organization support (POS) into the analysis of irrigation management performance, by linking multiple elements that are based on the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework. We employed principal component analysis (PCA) and ordered probit regression to analyze a database covering 785 households in the upstream of the Yellow River basin. The results suggested that social trust and POS positively affected the irrigation management performance, and social trust strengthened the positive effect of POS on the performance. Furthermore, the results indicated that personal trust and institutional trust, as well as perceived emotional support and physical support, positively affected the performance. In addition, we also found that household characteristics, household cognition, group characteristics, physical conditions, and rules-in-use also had significant impact on the performance. This paper can be used to inform the government that social trust and POS need to be considered in the common-pool resources (CPRs) management.Understanding the factors affecting irrigation management performance is crucial for sustainable resource use, especially with the decentralized management mode of irrigation systems being implemented in rural China. Simultaneous slack budgeting and retiming for synchronous circuits optimization

Abstract- With the challenges of growing functionality and scaling chip size, the possible performance improvements should be considered in the earlier IC design stages, which gives more freedom to the later optimization. Potential slack as an effective metric of possible performance improvements is considered in this work which, as far as we known, is the first work that maximizes the potential slack by retiming for synchronous sequential circuit. A simultaneous slack budgeting and incremental retiming algorithm is proposed for maximizing potential slack. The overall slack budget is optimized by relocating the FFs iteratively with the MIS-based slack estimation. Compared with the potential slack of a well-known min-period retiming, our algorithm improves potential slack averagely 19.6 % without degrading the circuit performance in reasonable runtime. Furthermore, at the expense of a small amount of timing performance, 0.52 % and 2.08%, the potential slack is increased averagely by 19.89 % and 28.16 % separately, which give a hint of the tradeoff between the timing performance and the slack budget.

Developmental changes in brain response to speech perception in late-talking children: A longitudinal MMR study

AbstractThis study used a longitudinal design to examine the development of mismatch responses (MMRs) to Mandarin lexical tones, an index of neural speech discriminative responses, in late talkers and typical controls at 3, 5, and 6 years of age. Lexical tones are phonetic suprasegments that distinguish the lexical meanings of syllables in tonal languages. The 2 year-old late talkers were later divided into persistent language delay and late bloomer groups according to their performance on standardized language tests at 4 years. Results showed that children with persistent language delay demonstrated more positive mismatch responses than the typical controls at 3 years of age. At the age of 5, no group difference were found in the amplitude of MMRs, but the maturation of MMRs could be observed in the change of topography, with more prominent negative response in the frontal sites only in the typical group. Correlations were found between the index of MMRs at 3 years and children’s language performance outcome at 6 years. Our results indicate that the development of fine-grained tone representations is delayed in late-talking children between 3 and 5 years and may be one of the underlying mechanisms which associated with later language performance

Does China’s stock market react to COVID-19 differently at industry level? Evidence from China

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, global economic growth has been negatively affected. The reaction of financial markets was particularly dramatic, especially in countries severely affected by the outbreak. Based on Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) data from August 13, 2019 to December 31, 2020, this study investigates the short-term and the long-term market reactions of industry indices. The event study method and the Fama-French five-factor model are used to analyse the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings reveal that cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) in most industries followed a similar short-term trajectory. However, the excess returns of the SSE Information Technology, SSE Telecommunication Services and SSE Materials show different performance in the long term. This study facilitates the analysis of the impact of large public emergencies, such as global pandemics, on investors’ expectations and decision-making. It also helps investors to make rational decisions and the government to formulate targeted policies

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological changes and quantitatively assess the roughness of dentin after the ablation with a Ytterbium-Doped Potassium Yttrium Tungstate (YB: KYW) thin-disk femtosecond pulsed laser of different fluences, scanning speeds and scanning distances.Method: Twelve extracted human premolars were sectioned into crowns and roots along the cementum-enamel junction, and then the crowns were cut longitudinally into sheets about 1.5 mm thick with a cutting machine. The dentin samples were fixed on a stage at focus plane. The laser beam was irradiated onto the samples through a galvanometric scanning system, so rectangular movement could be achieved. After ablation, the samples were examined with a scanning electron microscope and laser three-dimensional profile measurement microscope for morphology and roughness study. With increasing laser fluence, dentin samples exhibited more melting and resolidification of dentin as well as debris-like structure and occluded parts of dentinal tubules. Results: When at the scanning speed of 2400mm/s and scanning distance of 24μm, the surface roughness of dentin ablated with femtosecond pulsed laser decreased significantly and varied between values of dentin surface roughness grinded with two kinds of diamond burs with different grits. When at the scanning speed of 1200mm/s and scanning distance of 12μm, the surface roughness decreased slightly, and the surface roughness of dentin ablated with femtosecond pulsed laser was almost equal to that grinded with a low grit diamond bur. Conclusion: This study showed that increased laser influence may lead to more collateral damage and lower dentin surface roughness, while scanning speed and scanning distance were also negatively correlated with surface roughness. Adequate parameters should be chosen to achieve therapeutic benefits, and different parameters can result in diverse ablation results

Low oxygen tensions experienced in various pathological and physiological conditions are a major stimulus for angiogenesis. Hypoxic conditions play a critical role in regulating cellular behaviour including migration, proliferation and differentiation. This study introduces the use of a microfluidic device that allows for the control of oxygen tension for the study of different three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures for various applications. The device has a central 3D gel region acting as an external cellular matrix, flanked by media channels. On each side, there is a peripheral gas channel through which suitable gas mixtures are supplied to establish a uniform oxygen tension or gradient within the device. The effects of various parameters, such as gas and media flow rates, device thickness, and diffusion coefficients of oxygen were examined using numerical simulations to determine the characteristics of the microfluidic device. A polycarbonate (PC) film with a low oxygen diffusion coefficient was embedded in the device in proximity above the channels to prevent oxygen diffusion from the incubator environment into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) device. The oxygen tension in the device was then validated experimentally using a ruthenium-coated (Ru-coated) oxygen-sensing glass cover slip which confirmed the establishment of low uniform oxygen tensions (<3%) or an oxygen gradient across the gel region. To demonstrate the utility of the microfluidic device for cellular experiments under hypoxic conditions, migratory studies of MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells were performed. The microfluidic device allowed for imaging cellular migration with high-resolution, exhibiting an enhanced migration in hypoxia in comparison to normoxia. This microfluidic device presents itself as a promising platform for the investigation of cellular behaviour in a 3D gel scaffold under varying hypoxic conditions

With the rapid development of Industry 4.0, modern manufacturing systems have been experiencing profound digital transformation. Development of new technologies can help to improve the efficiency of production and the quality of products. With the increasingly complex production systems, operational decision-making has encountered challenges in the sustainable manufacturing process to satisfy customers and markets' ever-changing demands. Nowadays, the rule-based heuristics approaches are widely used for scheduling management in production systems, which however significantly depends on the expert domain knowledge. In this way, the efficiency of decision-making cannot be guaranteed nor meet the dynamic scheduling requirements in the job-shop manufacturing environment. In this study, we propose using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methods to tackle the dynamic scheduling problem in the job-shop manufacturing system. The proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm has been used in the DRL framework to accelerate the learning process and improve performance. The proposed method has been testified within a real-world dynamic production environment, and it performs better compared with the state-of-the-art method
