    A novel single-layer winding array and receiver coil structure for contactless battery charging systems with free-positioning and localized charging features

    The planar contactless battery charging system is an emerging technology that can be applied to a wide range of portable consumer electronic products. Beginning with a brief historical background, this paper presents a new single-layer winding array and receiver coil structure with cylindrical ferrite cores for planar contactless battery charging systems. Complying with the Qi standard, this design enables multiple devices to be placed and charged simultaneously on the wireless charging pad in a free-positioning manner. The charging flux is totally localized within the covered area between the selected primary winding and the secondary winding inside the load.     Using self-driven AC-DC synchronous rectifier as a direct replacement for traditional power diode rectifier

    Synchronous rectification has previously been adopted in switched-mode circuits for reducing the conduction losses particularly in high-frequency, low-voltage, and high-current applications. This paper presents a generalized self-driven ac-dc synchronous rectification technique that can be used even at mains frequency to develop an ac-dc synchronous rectifier that behaves like a diode bridge but with much reduced conduction losses and without control integrated circuits. This generalized concept can be extended from single-phase to multiphase systems. Experiments based on 1- and 2-kW single-phase systems have been successfully conducted for capacitive, inductive, and resistive loads. Very significant power loss reduction (over 50%) has been achieved in the rectification stage at both 110- and 220-V ac mains operations. This patent-pending circuit can be regarded as a direct replacement of a general-purpose diode rectifier. Due to the reduction of power loss, further reduction in the size and cost of the heat sink or thermal management for the power circuit becomes possible. © 2011 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Salt-induced osmotic stress for lipid overproduction in batch culture of Chlorella vulgaris

    Effect of NaCl-induced osmotic stress on lipid production was investigated in batch culture of Chlorella vulgaris. Based on the facts that NaCl stress improved lipid production but inhibited cells growth at the same times, the novel strategies of multiple osmotic stresses with different NaCl additions (2 g/L at 80 h, 4 g/L at 100 h, and 6 g/L at 120 h) were adopted for lipid overproduction. Results show that after 180 h cultivation, lipid yield reached 3.16 g/L and intracellular lipid content was 58.6%, increased by 21.1 and 22.9%, respectively, compared to the control. Further applying the strategies to 5 L fermentor, lipid yield of 3.81 g/L was achieved at 180 h, which was 30.1% higher than the control, suggesting application of osmotic stress to lipid overproduction as being feasible.Key words: NaCl-induced osmotic stress, heterotrophic cultivation, lipid, glucose, Chlorella vulgaris

    Precise Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotopic dating of the supergiant Shizhuyuan polymetallic deposit and its host granite, SE China

    The supergiant Shizhuyuan W-Sn-Bi-Mo deposit is hosted by the Qianlishan granite, a small, highly fractionated granitic pluton (~10 km2) with multiple phases of intrusions within the Early Yanshanian granitoid province of SE China. Strong alteration of skarn and greisen that formed in the contact zone between the first and second phases of granite intrusions and Devonian limestone is responsible for the polymetallic mineralizations. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon analysis indicates that the two early phases of the Qianlishan granite formed contemporaneously at 152 ± 2 Ma. Metasomatic minerals (garnet, fluorite and wolframite) separated from the skarn and greisen yield a Sm-Nd isochron age of 149 ± 2 Ma that is interpreted as the formation age of the Shizhuyuan deposit. Therefore, the mineralization of the supergiant Shizhuyuan polymetallic deposit formed contemporaneously with, or very shortly after, the intrusion of the small, highly fractionated Qianlishan granite. © 2004 Cambridge University Press.published_or_final_versio

    A genetic polymorphism and its genetic effects on goat myogenin gene in intron 1

    Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the myogenin (MyoG) gene were tested using primer induced restriction fragment length polymorphism assay-polymerase chain reaction (PIRA-PCR) from Bore goat and its upgrading offspring to Tangshan diary goat (including F1, F2 and F3). The effects of the myogenin gene on the birth weight, 1-month body weight and the weaning weight were also analyzed. On the basis of the DNA sequence of the goat myogenin gene (FJ607135), primers were designed to amplify myogenin gene. The result showed that one polymorphism (transition of g.558C>T) was found in intron 1 of goat myogenin gene, in which two alleles (A and B) and three genotypes (AA, AB and BB) were examined. The distributions of three genotypes were basically identical in four goat populations, and allele A was the dominant gene. The effect of the myogenin genotypes on the birth weight, 1-month body weight and the weaning weight were all not significant (P > 0.05) due to the small number of BB gaots; however, the values of AA genotype goats and AB genotype goats were obviously higher than those of BB genotype goats for three growth traits, in the order of AA > AB > BB. These results suggest that the myogenin genotype has some effects on partial growth traits of goat, and selecting the individuals with A allele could be favorable to the birth weight, 1-month body weight and the weaning weight.Key words: goats, myogenin gene, primer induced restriction fragment length polymorphism assay-polymerase chain reaction (PIRA-PCR), genetic polymorphisms, genetic effects

    Molecular characterization and expression analysis of a hepcidin gene from rice field eel (Monopterus albus)

    Hepcidin is a cysteine-rich, dual-function peptide with antimicrobial activity that plays crucial roles in iron homeostasis. A few hepcidin-like genes have been isolated from teleost. Here, we have identified a hepcidin-like gene from rice field eel (RFE), Monopterus albus. Nucleotide sequences including cDNA and genomic DNA (GenBank accession numbers: FJ436808 and FJ594996, respectively) and deduced amino acid sequences were presented. In the 949 bp-long genomic sequence, two introns and three exons were identified. The full-length cDNA encodes a prepropeptide of 90 amino acid residues. RTPCR analysis suggested that hepcidin transcripts are highly abundant in the liver and kidney, less abundant in the heart, skin, brain, blood cells, intestine, spleen and stomach and undetectable in muscle. After challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila infection or iron-dextran stimulation, the hepcidin transcript levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. The results revealed that the expression of hepcidin dramatically increased at 24 h post-infection of the pathogen injection. Moreover, hepcidin mRNAs in the liver, intestine and brain were 2.4, 1.5 and 2-fold increase, respectively, compared with the control animals after 5 days in iron-dextran injected RFEs.Key words: Rice field eel, Monopterus albus, hepcidin, gene expressio

    Levels and patterns of organochlorine pesticides in agricultural soils in an area of extensive historical cotton cultivation in Henan province, China

    Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have attracted widespread concern because of their environmental persistence and toxicity. The historical influence of different agricultural land use types on soil concentrations of OCP residues was investigated by collecting a total of 52 surface soil samples from long-term cotton fields and fields with other crops in Lvdian township, Henan province, eastern central China. The concentration, composition, and possible sources of 16 OCPs were determined and a health risk assessment of these soils was conducted. Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), heptachlor, chlordane, and dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane plus its main metabolites (DDTs) were the most frequently detected OCPs with concentrations of 2.9-56.4 ng g(-1), 4.3-14.0 ng g(-1), 18.0-1254.4 ng g(-1), and below detection limit (BDL) -206.1 ng g(-1), respectively. Analysis of variance of p,p-DDE shows significant (P < 0.05) differences while other OCPs show no significant differences between historical cotton fields and fields containing other crops. Compositional analysis suggests that the HCH is derived mainly from the use of lindane and that there are recent inputs. Analysis of variance and compositional analysis indicate that the p,p-DDE in surface soil from long-term cotton fields is derived mainly from the aerobic biodegradation of historical residues. The sum of carcinogenic risk values of OCPs for soil samples were found to be 1.58 x 10(-6), posing a low cancer risk to the inhabitants of the region studied

    Phylogeographic analysis and genetic structure of an endemic sino-japanese disjunctive genus Diabelia (caprifoliaceae)

    The Sino-Japanese Floristic Region (SJFR) is a key area for plant phylogeographical research, due to its very high species diversity and disjunct distributions of a large number of species and genera. At present, the root cause and temporal origin of the discontinuous distribution of many plants in the Sino-Japanese flora are still unclear. Diabelia (Caprifoliaceae; Linnaeoideae) is a genus endemic to Asia, mostly in Japan, but two recent discoveries in China raised questions over the role of the East China Sea (ECS) in these species' disjunctions. Chloroplast DNA sequence data were generated from 402 population samples for two regions (rpl32-trnL, and trnH-psbA) and 11 nuclear microsatellite loci were screened for 549 individuals. Haplotype, population-level structure, combined analyses of ecological niche modeling, and reconstruction of ancestral state in phylogenies were also performed. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period after the Tertiary, Diabelia was potentially widely distributed in southeastern China, the continental shelf of the East China Sea and Japan (excluding Hokkaido). After LGM, all populations in China have disappeared except those in Zhejiang which may represent a Glacial refuge. Populations of Diabelia in Japan have not experienced significant bottleneck effects, and populations have maintained a relatively stable state. The observed discontinuous distribution of Diabelia species between China and Japan are interpreted as the result of relatively ancient divergence. The phylogenetic tree of chloroplast fragments shows the characteristics of multi-origin evolution (except for D. sanguinea). STRUCTURE analysis of nuclear Simple Sequence Repeat (nSSR) showed that the plants of the Diabelia were divided into five gene pools: D. serrata, D. spathulata, D. sanguinea, D. ionostachya (D. spathulata var. spathulata-Korea), and populations of D. ionostachya var. ionostachya in Yamagata prefecture, northern Japan. Molecular evidence provides new insights of Diabelia into biogeography, a potential glacial refuge, and population-level genetic structure within species. In the process of species differentiation, ECS acts as a corridor for two-way migration of animals and plants between China and Japan during glacial maxima, providing the possibility of secondary contact for discontinuously distributed species between China and Japan, or as a filter (creating isolation) during glacial minima. The influence of the ECS in speciation and biogeography of Diabelia in the Tertiary remains unresolved in this study. Understanding origins, evolutionary histories, and speciation will provide a framework for the conservation and cultivation of Diabelia
