Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) heat exchange project: A summary report
A pilot data center to compute ocean atmosphere heat exchange over the tropical ocean is prposed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in response to the scientific needs of the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Program. Optimal methods will be used to estimate sea surface temperature (SET), surface wind speed, and humidity from spaceborne observations. A monthly summary of these parameters will be used to compute ocean atmosphere latent heat exchanges. Monthly fields of surface heat flux over tropical oceans will be constructed using estimations of latent heat exchanges and short wave radiation from satellite data. Verification of all satellite data sets with in situ measurements at a few locations will be provided. The data center will be an experimental active archive where the quality and quantity of data required for TOGA flux computation are managed. The center is essential to facilitate the construction of composite data sets from global measurements taken from different sensors on various satellites. It will provide efficient utilization and easy access to the large volume of satellite data available for studies of ocean atmosphere energy exchanges

The -adic exponential sum of a polynomial in one variable is studied. An
explicit arithmetic polygon in terms of the highest two exponents of the
polynomial is proved to be a lower bound of the Newton polygon of the
-function of the T-adic exponential sum. This bound gives lower bounds for
the Newton polygon of the -function of exponential sums of -power order

Small-angle x-ray-scattering study of phase separation and crystallization in the bulk amorphous Mg62Cu25Y10Li3 alloy
We report on a small-angle x-ray-scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry study of phase separation and crystallization in rapidly quenched amorphous Mg62Cu25Y10Li3 alloy samples. Differential scanning calorimetry demonstrates the occurrence of crystallization and grain growth upon isothermal annealing of these samples at 135 °C. The SAXS studies show the presence of large inhomogeneities even in the rapidly quenched as-prepared Mg62Cu25Y10Li3 alloy that is attributed to phase separation in the undercooled liquid during the cooling process. After isothermal annealing at 135 °C for longer than 30 min the samples exhibit a strong SAXS intensity that monotonically increases with increasing annealing time. During heat treatment, crystallization and growth of a nanocrystalline bcc-Mg7Li3 phase occurs in the Y-poor and MgLi-rich domains. The initially rough boundaries of the nanocrystals become sharper with increasing annealing time. Anomalous small-angle x-ray-scattering investigations near the Cu K edge indicate that while Cu is distributed homogeneously in the as-prepared sample, a Cu composition gradient develops between the matrix and the bcc-Mg7Li3 nanocrystals in the annealed sample
Phase diagram of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
The exact macroscopic wave functions of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates
in an optical lattice beyond the tight-binding approximation are studied by
solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The phase diagram for
superfluid and insulator phases of the condensates is determined analytically
according to the macroscopic wave functions of the condensates, which are seen

Asymmetric Avalanches in the Condensate of a Zeeman-limited Superconductor
We report the non-equilibrium behavior of disordered superconducting Al films
in high Zeeman fields. We have measured the tunneling density of states of the
films through the first-order Zeeman critical field transition. We find that
films with sheet resistances of a few hundred ohms exhibit large avalanche-like
collapses of the condensate on the superheating branch of the critical field
hysteresis loop. In contrast, the transition back into the superconducting
phase (i.e., along the supercooling branch) is always continuous. The fact that
the condensate follows an unstable trajectory to the normal state suggests that
the order parameter in the hysteretic regime is not homogeneous.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in PR
Monotonically improving approximate answers to relational algebra queries
We present here a query processing method that produces approximate answers to queries posed in standard relational algebra. This method is monotone in the sense that the accuracy of the approximate result improves with the amount of time spent producing the result. This strategy enables us to trade the time to produce the result for the accuracy of the result. An approximate relational model that characterizes appromimate relations and a partial order for comparing them is developed.
