Popular benchmark problems for geometric nonlinear analysis of shells

    Get PDF
In most, if not all, of the previous work on finite element formulation and nonlinear solution procedures, results of geometric nonlinear benchmark problems of shells are presented in the form of load-deflection curves. In this paper, eight sets of popularly employed benchmark problems are identified and their detailed reference solutions are obtained and tabulated. It is hoped that these solutions will form a convenient basis for subsequent comparison and that the tedious yet inaccurate task of reconstructing data points by graphical measurement of previously reported load-deflection curves can be avoided. Moreover, the relative convergent difficulty of the problems are revealed by the number of load increments and the total number of iterations required by an automatic load incrementation scheme for attaining the converged solutions under the maximum loads. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. GeV breaks in blazars as a result of gamma-ray absorption within the broad-line region

Spectra of the brightest blazars detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope Large Area Telescope cannot be described by a simple power law model. A much better description is obtained with a broken power law, with the break energies of a few GeV. We show here that the sharpness and the position of the breaks can be well reproduced by absorption of gamma-rays via photon--photon pair production on HeII Lyman recombination continuum and lines. This implies that the blazar zone lies inside the region of the highest ionization of the broad-line region (BLR) within a light-year from a super-massive black hole. The observations of gamma-ray spectral breaks open a way of studying the BLR photon field in the extreme-UV/soft X-rays, which are otherwise hidden from our view.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; published in ApJ Letter

Estimation of paleo-firing temperatures using luminescence signals for the volcanic lava baked layer in Datong, China

    Get PDF
Eight paleo-fired samples from the baked layer in different depths under the lava and one unfired sample were collected from Datong, China. Fine quartz grains (4–11 μm) from samples were used for probing into relationship between luminescence signals and paleo-firing temperatures. Findings from the re-firing experiments indicated that using thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensitivity changes could estimate the paleo-firing temperatures of samples: (1) 110 °C TL sensitivity change rate against the re-firing temperature can tell whether the sample has been fired to temperatures above 500 °C or not; (2) 150 °C TL sensitivity against the re-firing temperature can indicate whether the sample has been fired to temperatures above 900 °C or not; (3) the more specific paleo-firing temperatures can be estimated by comparing the ratio of OSL and 150 °C TL sensitivities against re-firing temperatures. Results showed that the paleo-firing temperatures of the eight lava-baked samples decreased exponentially with the distance from the lava. Based on the estimated temperature profile, the temperature of the lava was estimated to be about 1100 °C.postprin

Luminescence dating of volcanic eruptions in Datong, northern China

    Get PDF
In this study, fine-grain quartz was used for luminescence dating for lava baked samples from different sites in Datong. Optical stimulated luminescence (OSL), thermal transferred OSL (TT-OSL)/recuperated OSL (Re-OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) dating protocols were applied. For these samples, the OSL signals saturate at about 300–400 Gy, which limits their age to less than 100 ka based on their ambient dose rates. The TT-OSL/Re-OSL method has poor dose recovery. TL dating gives reliable results, and multiple-aliquot regenerative-dose TL method with sensitivity change correction based on the 325 °C TL peak of a test dose can be applied for samples up to 400 ka. The results indicate that the ages of the volcanoes in Datong are from 380 ka to 84 ka. The volcanic activity started earlier in the southeast area than those in the northwest part, which is consist with the literature data.postprin

Sliding stability analysis of a retaining wall constructed by soilbags

    Get PDF
Model tests were conducted to analyse the sliding stability of a retaining wall constructed by soilbags. The aim was to obtain an equation that calculates the active resultant earth pressure of sand acting on the wall in the ultimate state. Additionally, shear tests on multi-layers of vertically stacked soilbags were designed to investigate how the interlayer friction resistance varied with the height of the wall. The results show that the active earth pressure acting on the soilbag-constructed retaining wall in the ultimate state is non-linear, but it can be calculated from the force equilibrium of a differential element. The interlayer friction resistance of soilbags is found to be related to the shape of the sliding surface. Based on the obtained equation and the unique shear test results, the sliding stability of the retaining wall constructed by soilbags could be appropriately analyse

Effects of chemical composition on humidity sensitivity of Al/BaTiO3/Si structure

    Get PDF
Argon-ion-beam sputtering technique has been applied to deposit barium titanate (BaTiO3) films on silicon wafers at room temperature under vacuum, and then Al/BaTiO3/Si structures were fabricated. Results show that the current and capacitance of these devices are sensitive to the change of relative humidity at room temperature, and saturation absorption (response) time as well as humidity sensitivity of the devices depend on the chemical composition of the BaTiO3 films. For higher annealing temperature and longer annealing time, the oxygen composition increases while fixed charge density decreases. These changes result in lower humidity sensitivity and longer response time.© 1995 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
