    A survey on performance analysis of warehouse carousel systems

We discuss picking strategies for problems involving one carousel, consider the throughput of the system for problems involving two carousels, give an overview of related problems in this area, and present an extensive literature review. Emphasis has been given on future research directions in this area

    Image inversion analysis of the HST OTA (Hubble Space Telescope Optical Telescope Assembly), phase A

    Technical work during September-December 1990 consisted of: (1) analyzing HST point source images obtained from JPL; (2) retrieving phase information from the images by a direct (noniterative) technique; and (3) characterizing the wavefront aberration due to the errors in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) mirrors, in a preliminary manner. This work was in support of JPL design of compensating optics for the next generation wide-field planetary camera on HST. This digital technique for phase retrieval from pairs of defocused images, is based on the energy transport equation between these image planes. In addition, an end-to-end wave optics routine, based on the JPL Code 5 prescription of the unaberrated HST and WFPC, was derived for output of the reference phase front when mirror error is absent. Also, the Roddier routine unwrapped the retrieved phase by inserting the required jumps of +/- 2(pi) radians for the sake of smoothness. A least-squares fitting routine, insensitive to phase unwrapping, but nonlinear, was used to obtain estimates of the Zernike polynomial coefficients that describe the aberration. The phase results were close to, but higher than, the expected error in conic constant of the primary mirror suggested by the fossil evidence. The analysis of aberration contributed by the camera itself could be responsible for the small discrepancy, but was not verified by analysis

    Bulk submillimeter-wave mixers: Strain and superlattices

    Strained germanium crystals, doped with gallium, were used as heterodyne mixers at THz frequencies, with infrared bandwidths approaching a GHz. The mixer performance (conversion loss and mixer noise) was analyzed in terms of nonlinearities associated with acceptor levels and with relaxation rates of free holes. Comparison was made with similar mixers employing low lying donor levels in high purity GaAs and with hot electron InSb mixers

    Profile comparison of the Stokes parameters VV and II is a powerful tool for maser data analysis, providing the first direct methods for unambiguous determination of (1) the maser saturation stage, (2) the amplification optical depth and intrinsic Doppler width of unsaturated masers, and (3) the comparative magnitudes of Zeeman splitting and Doppler linewidth.     Heterodyne detection of the 752.033-GHz H2O rotational absorption line

    A tunable high resolution two stage heterodyne radiometer was developed for the purpose of investigating the intensity and lineshape of the 752.033 GHz rotational transition of water vapor. Single-sideband system noise temperatures of approximately 45,000 K were obtained using a sensitive GaAs Schottky diode as the first stage mixer. First local oscillator power was supplied by a CO2 laser pumped formic acid laser (761.61 GHz), generating an X-band IF signal with theoretical line center at 9.5744 GHz. Second local oscillator power was provided by means of a 3 GHz waveguide cavity filter with only 9 dB insertion loss. In absorption measurements of the H2O taken from a laboratory simulation of a high altitude rocket plume, the center frequency of the 752 GHz line was determined to within 1 MHz of the reported value. A rotational temperature 75 K, a linewidth 5 MHz and a Doppler shift 3 MHz were measured with the line-of-sight intersecting the simulated-plume axis at a distance downstream of 30 nozzle diameters. These absorption data were obtained against continuum background radiation sources at temperatures of 1175 and 300 K

    Nonlocal stabilization of nonlinear beams in a self-focusing atomic vapor

    We show that ballistic transport of optically excited atoms in an atomic vapor provides a nonlocal nonlinearity which stabilizes the propagation of vortex beams and higher order modes in the presence of a self-focusing nonlinearity. Numerical experiments demonstrate stable propagation of lowest and higher order vortices over a hundred diffraction lengths, before dissipation leads to decay of these structures.Comment: 3 figure

    We analyze the distribution of PageRank on a directed configuration model and show that as the size of the graph grows to infinity it can be closely approximated by the PageRank of the root node of an appropriately constructed tree. This tree approximation is in turn related to the solution of a linear stochastic fixed point equation that has been thoroughly studied in the recent literature

    Detection of pathological high-frequency oscillations in refractory epilepsy patients undergoing simultaneous stereo-electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography

    BACKGROUND: Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) have generally been used independently as part of the pre-surgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) patients. However, the possibility of simultaneously employing these recording techniques to determine whether MEG has the potential of offering the same information as SEEG less invasively, or whether it could offer a greater spatial indication of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) to aid surgical planning, has not been previously evaluated. METHODS: Data from 24 paediatric and adult DRE patients, undergoing simultaneous SEEG and MEG as part of their pre-surgical evaluation, was analysed employing manual and automated high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) detection, and spectral and source localisation analyses. RESULTS: Twelve patients (50%) were included in the analysis (4 males; mean age=25.08 years) and showed interictal SEEG and MEG HFOs. HFOs detection was concordant between the two recording modalities, but SEEG displayed higher ability of differentiating between deep and superficial epileptogenic sources. Automated HFO detector in MEG recordings was validated against the manual MEG detection method. Spectral analysis revealed that SEEG and MEG detect distinct epileptic events. The EZ was well correlated with the simultaneously recorded data in 50% patients, while 25% patients displayed poor correlation or discordance. CONCLUSIONS: MEG recordings can detect HFOs, and simultaneous use of SEEG and MEG HFO identification facilitates EZ localisation during the presurgical planning stage for DRE patients. Further studies are necessary to validate these findings and support the translation of automated HFO detectors into routine clinical practice

    TAC 2011 MultiLing pilot overview

    The Text Analysis Conference MultiLing Pilot of 2011 posed a multi-lingual summarization task to the summarization community, aiming to quantify and measure the performance of multi-lingual, multi-document summarization systems. The task was to create a 240–250 word summary from 10 news texts, describing a given topic. The texts of each topic were provided in seven languages (Arabic, Czech, English, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi) and each participant generated summaries for at least 2 languages. The evaluation of the summaries was performed using automatic (AutoSummENG, Rouge) and manual processes (Overall Responsiveness score). The participating systems were 8, some of which providing summaries across all languages. This paper provides a brief description for the collection of the data, the evaluation methodology, the problems and challenges faced, and an overview of participation and corresponding results
