Trace-Orthogonal PPM-Space Time Block Coding Under Rate Constraints for Visible Light Communication
Visible light communications (VLC) represents a new frontier of communications allowing high data-rate Internet access, specially in indoor environments, where the use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is growing as a viable alternative to traditional illumination. As a result, LED output intensity can be varied faster than human eye can perceive, thus guaranteeing simultaneous wireless communications and illumination. One of the key challenges is the limited modulation bandwidth of sources that is typically around several MHz. The use of multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) techniques in optical wireless system helps to increase the capacity of the system and thus improve the system performance. In this paper, we investigate the use of an optical MIMO technique jointly with pulse position modulation (PPM) in order to improve the data rates without reducing the reliability of the link. PPM is known to be signal-to-noise ratio efficient modulation format, while it is bandwidth inefficient so the use of MIMO can compensate that drawback with reasonable complexity. Furthermore, an offline tool for VLC system planning, including error probability and transmission rate, has been proposed in order to solve the tradeoff between transmission rate and error rate. Bar-Halo Friction in Galaxies II: Metastability
It is well-established that strong bars rotating in dense halos generally
slow down as they lose angular momentum to the halo through dynamical friction.
Angular momentum exchanges between the bar and halo particles take place at
resonances. While some particles gain and others lose, friction arises when
there is an excess of gainers over losers. This imbalance results from the
generally decreasing numbers of particles with increasing angular momentum, and
friction can therefore be avoided if there is no gradient in the density of
particles across the major resonances. Here we show that anomalously weak
friction can occur for this reason if the pattern speed of the bar fluctuates
upwards. After such an event, the density of resonant halo particles has a
local inflexion created by the earlier exchanges, and bar slowdown can be
delayed for a long period; we describe this as a metastable state. We show that
this behavior in purely collisionless N-body simulations is far more likely to
occur in methods with adaptive resolution. We also show that the phenomenon
could arise in nature, since bar-driven gas inflow could easily raise the bar
pattern speed enough to reach the metastable state. Finally, we demonstrate
that mild external, or internal, perturbations quickly restore the usual
frictional drag, and it is unlikely therefore that a strong bar in a galaxy

Phase transition curves for mesoscopic superconducting samples
We compute the phase transition curves for mesoscopic superconductors.
Special emphasis is given to the limiting shape of the curve when the magnetic
flux is large. We derive an asymptotic formula for the ground state of the
Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of large applied flux. The expansion is
shown to be sensitive to the smoothness of the domain. The theoretical results

Electro-optically tunable microring resonators in lithium niobate
Optical microresonators have recently attracted a growing attention in the
photonics community. Their applications range from quantum electro-dynamics to
sensors and filtering devices for optical telecommunication systems, where they
are likely to become an essential building block. The integration of nonlinear
and electro-optical properties in the resonators represents a very stimulating
challenge, as it would incorporate new and more advanced functionality. Lithium
niobate is an excellent candidate material, being an established choice for
electro-optic and nonlinear optical applications. Here we report on the first
realization of optical microring resonators in submicrometric thin films of
lithium niobate. The high index contrast films are produced by an improved
crystal ion slicing and bonding technique using benzocyclobutene. The rings
have radius R=100 um and their transmission spectrum has been tuned using the
electro-optic effect. These results open new perspectives for the use of
lithium niobate in chip-scale integrated optical devices and nonlinear optical
