    A technique for predictable real-time execution in the AN/UYS-2 parallel signal processing architecture

    The AN/UYS-2 provides the Navy with a state of the art Digital Signal Processor. The AN-UYS-2 is programmed utilizing the Processing Graph Methodology (PGM), which represents specific tasks as nodes in a graph. It utilizes a simple First-Come-First Served (FCFS) run-time resource allocation mechanism that supports large-grain data flow processing. While the mechanism is robust, easy to implement, and results in low run-time overhead, it is difficult to predict of a given PGM will meet the application requirements. Therefor, an approach that uses compile-time analysis to exploit the periodic arrival of data and a priori knowledge of the amount of computation and communication overhead is investigated. Improvement in performance of the machine when the PGM graphs are restructures using this approach, called Revolving Cylinder scheduling, is observed; and it is found to be effective when there is a high communication overhead or when the PGM nodes are of uniform size.http://archive.org/details/techniqueforpred00littLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Error Propagation Analysis in the SAE Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) and the EDICT Tool Framework

    This report documents the capabilities of the EDICT tools for error modeling and error propagation analysis when operating with models defined in the Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL). We discuss our experience using the EDICT error analysis capabilities on a model of the Scalable Processor-Independent Design for Enhanced Reliability (SPIDER) architecture that uses the Reliable Optical Bus (ROBUS). Based on these experiences we draw some initial conclusions about model based design techniques for error modeling and analysis of highly reliable computing architectures

    Personal project analysis : opportunities and implications for multiple goal assessment, theoretical integration, and behaviour change

    Much of our behaviour acts in service of pursuing our goals (Carver & Scheier, 1998). However, research into goal pursuit has mostly focused upon the study of single isolated health goals and behaviours. As Gebhardt (this issue) discusses, life is more complex; people pursue multiple goals via numerous behaviours (health related and not), which all potentially compete for limited resources. Further investigation is needed using multiple goal approaches that account for this complexity. This thought piece describes a comprehensive unit of analysis and an associated methodological framework for conducting research on multiple goals, and provides suggestions for its potential application in health psychology

    Functional expression of two glucose transporter isoforms from the parasitic protozoan Leishmania enriettii

    The parasitic protozoan Leishmania enriettii contains a family of tandemly repeated genes, designated Pro-1, that encode proteins with significant sequence similarity to mammalian facilitative glucose transporters. Pro-1 mRNAs are expressed almost exclusively in the promastigote or insect stage of the parasite life cycle. The Pro-1 tandem repeat encodes two isoforms of the putative transporter, iso-1 and iso-2, which have identical predicted amino acid sequences except for their NH2-terminal hydrophilic domains. We have now expressed both iso-1 and iso-2 by microinjecting their RNAs into Xenopus oocytes and assaying these oocytes for transport of various radiolabeled ligands. Both iso-1 and iso-2 transport [3H]2-deoxy-D-glucose, confirming that each protein is a bona fide glucose transporter. Each isoform also transports fructose and, to a much lesser degree, mannose. Compounds which inhibit 2-deoxy-D-glucose transport in L. enriettii promastigotes also inhibit transport in the microinjected oocytes expressing each isoform, indicating that the substrate specificities and pharmacological properties of each isoform are similar to those measured for 2-deoxy-D-glucose transport in intact parasites. The Km for transport of 2-deoxyglucose in oocytes expressing iso-1 is similar to that for oocytes expressing iso-2. These results reveal that both transporter isoforms have closely related functional properties and that the difference in their structures may serve some other purpose such as differential subcellular localization
